Title: Kaspari battleshpere shot.
Post by: Darkage on December 03, 2002, 03:01:44 pm
A animation i am rendering atm. But i thought i give you a nice big preview of it. The animation it self is very simple, i am already doing a small outline for it. The beam cone and the beam  it self is my work. The Kaspari battleshpere isn't. ( i can't model a cube:D )

anyway here it is.

I'll update my post when the animation is done.

Nothing like seeing the Old Ones drop some smackdown on a some poor schmucks. ;) Good job.

Is that the old battlesphere model (done using lathing) or the new one (done with Sub-d's)?

Actually, its not a sphere, in either incarnation. Its a set of subpatches, or a lathed spline. In this case though, the win isn't on the modelling, its on the texturing. If I remember correctly, the entire surface job on the spline version is completely procedural surface effects, without a map anywhere.

Lets see.. looks good but here's the nitpicks:

1) the beam is too abrupt. Its not there, and then it suddenly IS. It looks too choppy that way.

2) The edges of the beam cylinder are clearly visible. You might want to use a incidence angle gradient on the transparency channel to make that fade to perfect invisibility at the edges.

3) on the left side Battlesphere, the beam procedural seems to be drifting down the length of the beam. Check your settings.

it's a sphere,Idon't care about the technic used, it obviously has a sphere shape no?
oh, and procedurals are what I use when I'm lazy, the "win" would be to use textures, since you would convert that spline mesh ( if it's not splines convert to splines first of course ) to nurbs and use a pretty displace map on it (nurbs are perfect for that )

Venom, if we ever actually agree on something, I think the planet will tilt off its axis or something. ;)

Where did this name originate?  I'm supposed to know this stuff...but this is one I don't.

Did it come from the AoG people or production notes?

Acts like a tracking RBC I LIKE IT!!! In fact that beam of the bigger one on the left is cool cause at teh base as teh camera moves across the beam the edges turn black... it makes the weapon stand out from the second one on the right (obviously a different model/class)... is this just an animation or willt hey be released in the Bab2/or bab3? pack?
