Title: making capships
Post by: pyro-manic on December 03, 2002, 05:27:31 pm
This is a general cry for help from Pyro-manic.

I am making a medium - sized campaign with a friend, and we need some new ships for it. Alex Harris (made Allied Worlds and Allied Forces) has very kindly let us use some of his ace reskins (a white Hecate!!!), but we desparately need a brand new ship.

Problem is, we can't mod for **** ( 'scuse the language, but it's true!), so I am trying to find somebody who will create a complete, working ship for us. I've drawn up some plans, with dimensions, specs and rough skin ideas, but I can't make it!

If anyone is skilled and generous enough to make this for us, then we would be eternally grateful, and you would get HUGE credit for it in the campaign.

I know it's a big deal to ask for this kind of help, but we have to because otherwise, in a nutshell, we're buggered!

You might try downloading one of the publicly available ones.  There are plenty. :)

What he said.

Or upload your design spec. Some generous sorts have been known to work on meshes and stuff before just for the fun of it (the Raynor comes to mind).

OK!

I'll have another rummage through the archives here and on VWatch (F2S is still down, I think), and I'll stick my drawings up here as soon as I've scanned 'em.

Like me! :D

I'm not the best modeller in the universe, but I consider myself competent.

Have you actually tried or are you just selling yourselves short? It doesn`t take long to learn the basics of a 3D program and you might suprise yourself by actually being good :)

You might not need to finish the model yourself. If you do some of the work by getting a good looking mesh made you`ll find it much easier to find someone to texture and convert it.

Or you can get someone to make you the pof and do the work of pathing it etc yourself.

Anyway if you haven`t tried before or want to give it a second try  have a look of the modding section of my FAQ which has the basics you need to get started.

There is the small matter of money....Not all of us can afford a 3D program. I am using POVRAY for instance!

There are links to TS2 in my FAQ so you can dip your toes in the water before you go splashing out large sums of money.

Hmmm....

I'll have a go at blender and TS2. Dunno how well I'll do, but what the hell!

Thanks to karajorma and HotSnoJ for the links. I'll post my attempts here shortly, so's you can have a giggle at them:lol:

Killfrenzy - is that an offer? Let me know - I'll send you the drawings if you're interested!

No problem. The community can always use new modders and texturers so it's worth people trying out cause sometimes you can surprise yourself.

I didn`t get into modding for cause I figured I`d never be any good at it (I can`t draw or paint. I have the artistic ability of a rock) but 3D is really a whole different bunch of skills from most other types of art and it's hard to say how good you are until you`ve tried it.

I think Wings3D is a lot easier to use then Blender. (Though Blender probably has more features, but I could never use it because it didn't work well with my video card.)
www.wings3d.com
Wings3D has a nice feature for FS2 modellers: Hit F5 and it'll select all the faces with 5+ verts, and you can split them into faces with 4 verts (tessalate | quadrangulate) or 3 verts. (tessalate | triangulate) That helps cut down on geometry problems due to the collinear vertex and non-plainer face problems. It can't do real texturing, but via a plugin it can create a basic UV map (by assigning materials, aka colors, to groups of faces) that can be edited in a program like LithUnwrap.

Could be........:D

Depends on what the ship looks like. Check out one example of the sort of crap I can do (http://www.boomspeed.com/killfrenzy/Victorious.jpg) and then decide. :)

Thanks EdrickV!

I'll have a go of Wings as well, see if it's any good.

EDIT:
KillFrenzy: Nice! What is it? Looks kinda cool. I'll send you my sketches once I've scanned 'em (I'll do it tonight - probably between 6pm and 10pm GMT)
/EDIT

NOTE:The website for my campaign is now up at

www.geocities.com/pyrocash_hos_take

It's kind of empty (well, very empty) at the moment, but I'll put some more stuff up on the weekend.

Take a look!

In answer to your question, that's a Karran Serenity-class Battleship from The Swarm War (A FreeSpace 2 TC that's still in the very early stage). That particular one is the KS Victorious which will SLAUGHTER a Sathanas on one side, and the Colossus on the other.

Capships in the Swarm War are DEADLY!!! Attacking one in a fighter (particularly towards the end of the campaign) will be SUICIDE!!
