Title: The ending to FS3
Post by: Executor on December 05, 2002, 11:57:39 am
I'm sure we've all dreamed about how great FS3 would be if it was ever made, and we all have ideas on how the story should unfold. How would you have the game end if you were writing it?

It's FreeSpace tradition to always have a happy ending, so here's mine.

The GTVA are nearing completion of a Knossos portal to reopen the Sol jump node. A few years back, one of their systems received a radio transmission from Earth attempting to find out if any of their former colonies still exist. Maybe the GTVA responds, don't really care about that. Anyway, as the GTVA is beginning testing of the Knossos, the Shivans detect it. The usual happens: another invasion, Alpha 1 has to singlehandedly destroy a Juggernaut armada, etc. Once the Shivan threat is nullified, the Knossos is finished, and a probe is sent through to reestablish contact with Earth. The final cutscene is rolling as the probe exits the subspace portal. The camera pans up and you see Earth. It's not quite the blue planet Petrarch remembered, though, for it's been completely destroyed; no one left alive. The GTVA is a year late, the Shivans got here first. To make it even more ironic, the initial powering-up of the Knossos might have been the reason the Shivans found it, though they might have used another, unstable jump node to reach Earth.

I'm a sadistic bastard, ain't I?

isn't this discussed over and over again, there will probably never be a FS3, and this way you only tear open the old wounds. no offense, but i think you shouldn't bring up FS3 unless your volition, interplay, or if you can buy the rights and give them to volition.

the story sounds good tough, make a campaign out of it

I know there won't be a FS3, I just wanted to know how other people would write the ending to it.

The concern isn't the ending, it's the beginning.

Want to know how FS3 begins?

Beta 1: "THQ, you're late!  Britney's Hot Dance Moves dusted my game and two sequels.  You want FS3?  Scan that debris field!  That's FS3 right there!  You're a disgrace to game manufacturing, THQ! I'm filing a report!!"

There have been a ton o campaigns about this. Earth is destroyed, Earth goes to war with rest of GTVA, etc.

Good idea though, if you do make a campaign, i'd be willing to help.

Ummm... right. Let's see--

FS1-- Vasuda Prime glassed. Only node to Earth destroyed.

FS2-- Entire Capella system destroyed. Millions dead.

If this is your idea of happy, you must be a riot at parties.

Perhaps its better to think of it as damage limitation;)

FS3 -- Entire arm of the galaxy amputated

FS4 -- Entire galaxy explodes

FS5 -- Universe goes pop

FS6 -- Number of dimensions reduced by one

I was being sarcastic. I guess people around here don't have a sense of humor.

That sounds pretty cool hactually, but then, I like all these unexpected endings and stuff. As a bit of an elaboration, for the final cutscene, I would have the camera panning around the players ship/convoy in subspace, hearing snippets of speeches from the Knossos project fading in and out "We've all worked hard for this day" , "The TV Knossos project is undoubtedly the greatest and most outstanding of all joint Terran Vasudan projects, for, unlike the Collosus of the past, we are now united not in a work of war, but in the quest for knowledge, in short, we unite in the spirit of peaceful coexistence between our two races.", "Today, we celebrate the first true defeat of the destroyers since the great war, but tomorrow is the true victory, when the greatest wound they have left on our space is finally healed", "Good Luck pilots, and Godspeed" Etc. Etc. Then the player gets all happy and proud of himself, until he sees the blackened husk of earth, completely changing the tone of the cutscene. Big musical buildup, bring up see earth, cut music, 2 seconds later, cut to credits.

Yeah, great, let's let THQ run the franchise into the ground the way Toom Raidar was.  We'll get dozens of FreeSpace games, all of which are craptacular, with the last one being slightly redeeming. :D

Hee :).  I try not to bag on companies for their decisions, regardless of whether or not I agree with those decisions.  Given, it really bugs the crap out of me that a freakin' Britney Spears game got priority over FS3, but that's capitalism for ya.
