Using the code from a more modern game to replace the engine with? I mean, when it's been legally released? What would stop this from happening (except from too much work)?

Ummm. That would require essentially making a Freespace total conversion of that game, converting all models, weapons, interface art etc. AND all the game behavior. :no::blah:

Well that would seriously screw up various function calls throughout the thing if you only replaced parts of it... I don't think the source code people are willing to reassign tons of variables/functions/whatnot. (it wouldn't be as simple as reassining anyway)

and i don't see so many modern games with a "free" engine (except for the open source projects)

Much as it's a nice idea (I myself would LOVE to have some parts of the Starlancer engine in FS2) it does open up a huge can of worms. The FS2 engine is nice to modders, most other games aren't.
