Title: Operation Rift
Post by: Eishtmo on December 06, 2002, 11:23:24 pm
After the Great Crash of Warpstorm, heretic had all but decided to abandon it in favor of concentrating on Libra Wars.  I was, and still am BTW, not happy with the idea of WS dying and tried to convince him not to kill it.  The arguement I made might have had some affect, though I think being bugged by others did more, but later he did open a sub-forum in Libra, thus starting the last two generations of Warpstorm.

What I told him was this:  Warpstorm represented the spirit of the internet.  Think about it, it had topics but most of the time they were ignored.  Those who visited it almost never left, and it was a fun place.  That and it crashed every couple of months.  Or something like that, I forget exactly.

The point of this is simple, Warpstorm had a kind of spirit that should not be allowed to die.  The Warpstorm domain and name, however, are unnecessary.  In fact, I once commented that I thought we should abandon the Warpstorm name due to all the tarnish it had absorbed over the years.  (BTW, when did it get started, I've got an idea.)

That's what Operation Rift is (I needed a name, that's why I used Rift), a resurrection of Warpstorm's spirit, but in a new form.  Using my own money (along with a friend of mine), a new site and forum will be established with similar elements to what you know and love, along with a few new things.  This, unfortunatly, will take a while as I'm completely new to this.  Hopefully, it'll be up and going before the new year.

Until then, I'll make arrangements for a temporary Rift to be setup on an ezboard (silence, the best part is coming) that has been paid for and thus has no ads or popups (see, I told you).  The person who owns it is sleeping right now, so I'll link to it sometime tomorrow once its up and going.

What I need from you is your support.  Not your money (I've got enough, for now), but your moral, and technical, support to make this happen.  This is all new to me, but we've all got to start somewhere, and with something this good at stake, this is the best place possible.

Warpstorm is dead, however, and we shall all mourn its loss.  But its spirit is alive and kicking.

Cool, I'll help however I can... I need a place where I can casually spam and discuss whatever and the WS spirit is just that. :)

What kind of help do you need specifically?

The Warpstorm crashes, drama, rebuilding and constant taking over of our lives lead to my final decision to kill it outright after speaking with my fellow founder and the father of Warpstorm heretic. Still, I miss it greatly and deleting it from my favorites forlder, a place that has never in 3 years been without the Warpstorm link, was a dark day. And so to this plan I do the following:

*salutes Eish*

As a founding member of Warpstorm (and the last remaining one come it's last days no less) I wish you good luck Eishtmo. Good to see that something we worked so hard at had such an impact. I wish you the best at succeeding. Let me know in January when I return and you get it up and running.

Eish, AFAIK and IMHO (gotta love acronyms), EZBoard sucks regardless of if it's paid for or not. However, I readily admit that I may just be speaking out of a rear bodily orfice of mine and not know what the heck I'm talking about. :D

On the other hand, I have quite a bit of experience with phpBB (http://www.phpbb.com/), which is completely free - no ads - and I can say that it rivals the current vB in features and professional feel.

i use phpbb on my site as well, and i like it. it's simple, just uplaod the entire folder from your hd and tyoe the URL in your browsers, and the rest is just filling the apropriate boxes. check www.phpbb.com and see if it's any use.

BTW this isn't a marketing talk, just a piece of advice!

I did email you Falcon (via the HLP email thingy, so who knows how functional that is).

Like I said, the ezboard thing is temporary.  Speaking of which, here (http://pub135.ezboard.com/boneisneverenough) it is.  Just scroll down to the Rift.  Anyways, Kirana is going to be my partner in this mess (I'm not totally made of money afterall), but her main concern is getting a place for all her smilies. (http://pub135.ezboard.com/boneisneverenough.showEmoticonsHelp)  She's a bit of a ditz, but cool enough.

Anyways, I'm glad to see you're all behind me on this.  The final name for the site hasn't been chosen yet, but we're working on it.  At the moment, I've got other duties to attend to, but the serious work will begin shortly.

Oh, and as for phpbb, Kirana doesn't like it for some reason, so we're going to try to avoid using it.  Personally, I agree with you Sandwich, but this is a joint project.

Oh, and mingle with the locals, you'll have to get used to them as much as they'll have to get used to you.  Later folks, back to the salt mines.

Done and done.  General update, I've learned a lot in the last few days, and I may be able to get the new place up and going much sooner than expected.  Unfortunatly, a good chunk of this week is shot, so further advancement will take time.  Tonight, I'll add an abreviated version of my Wild Webcomic Review thread to the temporary Rift.  Three (and a half) new reviews are forth coming.

Update on the project.

I would have gotten more done the last couple of weeks, but I simply haven't had the time.  However, I can say that most of the senior staff has been assembled (possibly all of it, I haven't heard anything on the last person yet) and we probably, likely have a forum code to play with.  Also, we now have an idea of the type of host we'll need, but we still need a host, any suggestions on this point?

Also, we need a name.  My original idea has been taken, though I suppose we could go with a .org or something instead of .com.  Suggestions for here would also be great.

Except for the host bit, everything else is falling into place and it appears we'll be ready for January, though whether we start the first of the year is up in the air until we actually get a host.

Finally, I'm working secretly to create something special to memorialize Warpstorm.  More once I figure out what it all is (no talking, and I mean you!).  Later.

For the love of God relax.  I haven't been involved that much and I was a fricking Admin for quite some time.  Take a chill pill and have a coke.  Everything will be fine.

Okay, sorry for not updating sooner, but I've been working my ass off the last couple of weeks.  Of course, that means I've got more money to keep the site up longer, so there's a good side to all this.

Really, at the moment I'm waiting on a reply to a question I had with the potential host.  Once that's cleared up, things should move pretty quickly.  The site's name is still up in the air, but I think I know what it'll be, so no big.  We should (depending on things) be up by the new year, as I said.  Later.

because, given all the wasted time and effort that went into Warpstorm, perhaps it would have been better served had it died a long time ago...
