Title: Fred Problems
Post by: Knight Templar on December 08, 2002, 07:45:11 pm
Ok i'm having some trouble with FRED as the title suggests..

First off, I'm using FS Open and It is a pretty ship heavy mission, but before you make presumptions here's the probem.

I made a mission in fred. It worked just fine although it had too many ships in it (slowed my comp, shut down FS2) so I got rid of some unnesacsary cargo containers and freighters. Play it again, its going fine.

Then I go to do my debreifing and all. I do the debreifing and finish put some finishing touches on it and I'm done. I go to test, It works fine but I wasn't paying attention (damn soda) and I got hit by a Hecate on it's way out (shut up.) I realised there were a few problems with message times and I noticed that Delta wing came in when they weren't supposed to. They are supposed to come in when One of the ships turns traitor.

Ok, so I get back onto FREDOpen and go to make the changes. Easy, I adjust the message length, notice that my Hecate wasn't talking when it was supposed to because I accidentally had it on the wrong ship or something, fix that. Everything looks good right?

Well ok, I start up Freespace, select the mission and it locks up on the mission selection screen. Doesn't even go to the loading bar. The music cuts off and its just the message screen.

I finnaly broke out of it and got into windows and tried it again.. same thing cept I had to restart. after restarting my comp, I tested another mission of mine. Worked perfectly. I figured hopefully the problem fixed itself (:doubt: )

Come back, try it again, Locks up. So yeah, that's my A-1 Supar detailed problem.. who wants to step up and help me out ? :D

*sends a squad of Stormtroopers after KT*
*watches as they all miss completely and are taken down in one shot each*

:sigh: It's so hard to find good help these days...

OK...assuming none of the above posts answered your question, here's my two cents:

The way I see it, you'll be looking at one of two possibilites... either you have too much stuff going on at one particular time, or your mission is just producing one of those pointless but utterly stubborn errors.

I have developed my prefered method for tracking down a bug: first, I open two instances of FREDII, and open the problemtaic mission in one. I manually add each ship and wing, but don't give them any arrival or departures. Test the mission in FS2 (this is why this bit is done the hard way - so the game doesn't complain about missing SEXPs). Then, use Notepad to cut n' paste the wings section of the mission. Save and test. Cut n' paste the messages. Test. Then, cut n' paste the events section - it's here that you'll find your bug 99% of the time. If the mission won't run once the events section has been added, remove the whole lot and then re-add the events one at a time (remembering to keep an eye out for events which won't fire because you haven't pasted the triggering event yet... if that makes sense. If you get those erros, just ignore them for now). If the events have been eliminated from your list of suspects, the debrief is the next place to look - strange, but once I had a debrief section which was crashing the misson due to the SEXP used to trigger it.

Anyway, repeat for the rest of the sections such as mission notes and briefings, until you've located your offending SEXP or ship or whatever. Works for me, every time - though of course you may well locate the bug and find you can't do anything about it. Sometimes FREDII/FS2 are just plain unreasonable, refusing to do things they quite blatantly should be able to. And that's why I hate FRED so :)

Course, could just be an SCP bug...

Well my bet is that I have too much going on at one time..

I need to tone it down abit, but I got rid of Delta wing altogether to make things smoother and more challenging.

Thanks a lot DG for the help (Unlike the other hosers). I'd try it, but I'm pressed for time tonight and can't FRED anylonger.

Stealth, get your arse in LM Internal and look at it.. I need somebody to take the missions for me.
