How about a Freespace movie? All the best writers and animators get together, and we all wright a Freespace: The Great War movie, then (maybe) animate it!
-
I'm a terrible writer.. but I can do the animating :D
if Mikhael will just lend me some of those meshes of his.....
-
How big is this movie gona be? cos it's gona take quite a while to download me guesses. Plus HLP are trying to cut the amount of stuff on their servers.
But its not a bad idea. I'me working on a vasudan mesh at the moment if thats any use?
-
Very good idea.
*opens max*
-
So, who wants to start off the script?
-
Like Thorn said, i suck at writing.
But i also can do the animating thats easy.
-
does anyone have a cray?
-
Oh God, please don't make me start it
I tried to do this earlier, and it came out like the FS1 intro, which is not what I wanted.
Please someone start it, and I'll pitch in from there!
WAAAAHHHH!!!!

Have a looksee at Eishtmo's Great War fanfic.

It was a dark and stormy nebula....
:p

Why not start off doing just a scene or main batrle (like 3 minutes or something .. up to 10 if possible) from one of the Campaigns or games. Include shots of the ships captains giving orders, hull breaches, people fixing stuff in engineering.. all that junk. Then make it all space battle with drama (Alpha one giving orders.. pilots dropping like flys left and right)

This wil be more then 10 min if you add inside stuff to it and mix it in the main battle. And it's realy hard to do realisticly.

I'm not the one that suggested a movie :blah:
-
If someone wants to give me $30000 to take the courses.. I'll do it myself :p
-
sweeeettt!!!!!
i've been thinking (keyword there) of writing a script for FS2.... just need to regraph my ideas for the Great War and I'll be good to go.
I sure as heck am in :D

bah... space is no problem... as long as it's smaller than 60 GB i'll host it.
or an0n can host it on his server... one or the other... or both

Nice idea, but this isn't the type of story you should be looking for. It's too big, too cheesy, and too much of a story to make a movie.
What you guys want is something smaller, with more action. Probably a short bit with just fighters or something. Create a short rather than a full length movie, which would be far beyond our capablities or attention spans. There are a few good short stories in the Archive, like Flamerace (which would probably work best, in my opinion) and a couple of others.
If you're serious about this kind of thing (and knowing this place. . .), I'll be happy to help. But I want a finished product out of something like this, not just some half finished ideas and random news posts.

MAKE THE MISSING FS1 CUTSCENES!

you don't need that, but you need people that would work on it from the begining to the end, and that's the pb: it won't happen, period. So I'm out of this, play nice guys ;)
-
I tried this with a Radio Drama - which is much easier than a movie - a while back and it died. Good luck tho.
-
I can write the script. Others will have to animate.
-
i could try to animate :)
-
Guys, this is a huge project. Start out small. Make the missing cutscenes (like GalacticEmperor said) first, and then do standalone stuff. Work up to a full-length movie slowly.
-
i can't contribute to this.
good luck though!

What's the fun in that? All we get to see are a few missing cutscenes with little or no action :D

Actually, I was thinking the same thing. That is a cutscene that would be a great project to do. It's essentially already scripted out in the Reference Bible so all you have to do is animate it, and maybe extend it a bit for a touch more action.

Idea for Intro:
*start facing dark starscape with debris floating by (unknown to viewer, it came from destroyed GTA fighters), slowly pan around, with foreboding music, and meet a Typhon class engaged broadsides with an Orion (pointing opposite way)*
Text: Unknown location, somewhere along the Vasudan border
*music switches to something like m3_battle1 from fs1*
*we switch to a view from a turret on top of the Orion - the Orion is dealing a fair amount of damage out, but the Vasudan bombers circling her are wearing down her armoured hull plates*
*camera pans up and to aft of the typhon. The system star is now visible, and as the viewer watches, a faint shadow of the Lucifer's hull is seen blocking the star's light* (music is sharp and piercing, a la m6_earv2 as the viewer knows what is now showen)
*music goes to something like m7_battle2 from fs1*
*cut to two Anubis's breaking off thier attack position and flying towards the rear of the Typhon (takes a while - to give size perspective)*
*Anubis's suddenly get faced with a face-full of red shivan pulse fire coming from the Lucifer's turrets - this weapons fire lights up the front prongs and nose of her*
UNseen - On the Typhon's bridge the weapons fire allows her sensors to detect the lucifer briefly
*the Typhon begins to turn, speeding up slightly, and the Orion pitches down*
*the Anubis's, now spewing gas, try to open fire at the visible part of the Lucifer, however thier fire is deflected by some sort of energy field*
*suddenly the camera switches to the Lucifer's fighter bay and four Manticores scream past*
*music now goes to m8_battle3 style for the dogfight*
*after a brief chase around the lucifer, and between the Orion/Typhon (chance to have weapons fire blasting by across the way), the Manticores blast the Anubis' out of the stars*
*music switches to something like m2_earv1*
*suddenly the Lucifer's LRed's (or old equivelant) begin to charge up*
*the Orion's nose is now above the Lucifer, and the typhon is at broadsides due to her turn*
*music suddenly increases in pace to battle_G02 from fs2*
*suddenly two streams of energy errupt from the glowing prongs of the Lucifer, slicing sideways along the Typhon and the other pentrating the engine of the Orion*
*the Orion begins to break apart, explosions ripping along her hull. The final explosion causes debris to hit the position of the camera, from the black we switch to viewing the Typhon*
*The Typhon has taken less centralised damage, but she isn't getting away. as the damatic music hits its zenith, two more beams burn across the side of the screen and slice into the typhon - she explodes almost immediately, with the shivan beam fire filling the screen and then fading to black.*
But er, don't ask ME to render it ;)
-
Nice. However, could you use the italic tags for the action text, bold for names, etc. ;)
Makes it easier to read :D
-
That would be great for when the Amadeus was destroyed.
...but not for the attack on Tombaugh. ;)
-
Gotta better idea: Use m5_btl1, m5_earv2, m5_earv1, m_5btl2.
Creepy, and makes for a good atmopshere (golly, maybe thats why they call it Spook :D )
Expect a battle scene or a bar scene from me soon.

I vouch for this.

Hey, I'm quite interested in this.. (since my work concerns this sorta stuff anyway) What I do suggest first is to just have the time to write the script. Once thats done, pic a scene you want to make a test render out of. If it looks cool, do another one. And so and so forth until you're honest that you can make good looknig test footage. Then you acutally start talking about making a movie. This is what I've done on my "secret" project for the past 6 months really, writing and re writing the script. Its finally in its Storyboarding phase (which should be by now complete). So once thats complete, we'll just pick the scenes for our cgi test. And if all looks promisiong. We will begin getting all the props and clothes and stuff done.
So if you REALLY want to make a honest good movie prepared to be commited. The Director the MOST of all. He must keep the others workin on it, and not push it aside if things aren't progressing. So lets say if work starts today, then set the movie deadline for this time next year. Im not kidding. This also realieves you of a bit of stress when making the film project.
However...
I don't know How exactly it might work for a fully CGI movie. What I would suggest if that, were to be so, is to split the teams. Have one team do the ships, models backgrounds etc. Another takes care of the characters, and finaly the team that does the space battles. All under the mighty control of the Director who makes sure no one is straying too far off the script.
But all this is for nought without a script, and a eligetable Director and most important of all, the TIME AND PASSION.
So script first.
What I could put up is my now defunct Full Circle synopsis/script that won't be going anywhere. So why not just post it here for you guys, as a base or soemthing for you to think of... (Now you can see what the campaign could have been, didn't liek the ending though my self... Oh well):
PROLOGUE
The screen is black, then in the center appears “500,000 years ago…” We open up to a star filled background. A dark object appears from the lower left corner with an alien sun appearing over its horizon. We see that it’s a beautiful blue planet, quite similar to Earth. Then in either text or voice, someone speaks.
Ancient: [sad] We are the last… Our great empire, decimated by an enemy without a face nor remorse. We are pushed back to our homeworld, desperate to protect what is left of our civilization, our lives… We can see their ships… Black, jagged shapes that bring nothing but destruction, approach our birth system… We are the last of a vast empire that once spanned across the galaxy... This is our final stand… Their last obstacle… We must protect what is left our home. All that is left of our once vast fleet has been mustered to defend our system. The first ships are appearing from subspace… We are the last to protect our species…
The scene fades out and the mission begins. The briefing will take place while the player is flying in his ship.
In-game mission script
GOAL: survive.
The player is in his fighter, and is among many other ANCIENT ships. 4 Cruisers, 2 corvettes and countless fighters fill the orbit of the ANCIENT homeworld. There is constant alien communication chatter. Unrecognizable to the player.
Mek’net: [alien language] Fleet, we have contacts on the outer rim attacking the main defense line.
The is a short moment of silence.
Mek’net: [alien language] They have breached our defense line! All fighters and cruisers prepare for assault. Incoming enemies…
Moments later, space opens up in blue flares as SHIVAN fighters and bombers
Emerge from subspace, followed by 3 SHIVAN cruisers. The ANCIENT fleet attack.
Shurim 1: [alien language] Dachan, protect the fleet from those bombers. Shurim and Kara wing, follow me! Lets take out those fighters!
10 Minutes into the mission, there are still more squadrons of SHIVAN fighters and
bombers from subspace. There is constant unrecognizable alien chatter over the
comms.
Kara 2: [alien language] There’s so many of them!
Shurim 1: [alien language] Cut the chatter, concentrate on those fighters! We can’t affor-
Shurim 1 gets destroyed in mid-sentence. The mission continues, as the fleet destroys
the last SHIVAN cruiser, it looks like the tides of the battle are turning.
Mek’net: [alien language] We are registering new contacts… Four cruisers and- … What is that…?
As the battle rages on, something odd happens. The sun falls into shadow. Then from the darkness giant blazing beams rip through space, towards the homeworld. Two ANCIENT cruisers are in the path of the beams and are destroyed. The beams hit the homeworld, and the players fighter begins to violently shake.
[Cut to a cutscene]
With some sort of exiting choral or orchestral music, the Beams slice through the
homeworld, making the planet begin to collapse within itself, then suddenly explode. Giant chunks of rock hurtle into space, crashing into the ANCIENT and SHIVAN ships destroying them, along with the fighters. A group of fighters evade the hurtling rocks, however three of them finally crash into one rock or another. All that is left is one fighter [the player] who successfully evades them. Then suddenly something black and large looms in front of him and he doesen’t have time to evade. He crashes into the black hull. The screen goes black and new words appear on the screen. “January 14th, 2387. now” [Subject to change]
ACT 1: Rising Storm
Campaign Briefing by Admiral Riken
[page 1]
Good morning pilots! I can see that the leave has fattened a few of you up! Unfortunately, it is time to get back to work gentlemen. As of 0700 hours, the GTVA has declared war on the terrorist organization known as the Terran Preservation Coalition.
The GTVA symbol animation is shown.
[page 2]
The TPC was once a scientific R&D unit called ETAK-A, comprised of the GTVA’s brightest scientists. They were assigned to reverse engineer the ETAK device that was confiscated by the GTVA during the 2nd Great War from the Neo Terran Front. Most of the information surrounding the ETAK device and its following research projects is classified. However, the TPC claims to have finally deciphered the Shivan language system. Believing that their cause is for the benefit of all the GTVA, ETAK-A left the GTVA and began massing its own fleet, gathering system after system to join their cause in its beliefs of gaining a lasting peace in the galaxy!
The TPC logo is shown, then something on the ETAK device, then a map showing the systems that have joined.
[page 3]
As of 2100 hours last night, the TPC has overrun the GTVA research station at the Ross 128 star. All military and civilian crafts have been assaulted and destroyed, and the stations crew either dead or captured. No demands have been given by the TPC. We believed the fleet that attacked the Ross 128 station as the TPC’s main battle group. But 20 minutes later, we monitored large fleet mobilizations in and around the Ross 128 system. We believe their forces to be on the same scale as the NTF 20 years ago.
There is an animation on the attack on the Ross 128 station.
MISSION 1: No negotiations.
GOALS
PRIMARY: Destroy the 12 communication satellites.
SECONDARY: Destroy all fighters.
Briefing
Welcome to the 67th Vipers, pilot. We’ve heard a lot about you, so we’re expecting a lot! Make us proud.
The TPC’s takeover of the Ross 128 research base, must have really pissed the GTVA off, because they’re sending US in there to take care of it! Our first priority is to cut off the communications between the base and the massing fleets around the system. This will be a synchronized assault on the communication satellite grid.
Taking out all of the major communication satellites, will severely disrupt communications to and from the station, allowing us to start our main assault on the station.
Alpha, you will enter grid 36a. Intelligence reports that there are constant patrols by fighters around the communication grids, however the fighters are old and dated. So they should prove no problems for you. But when you enter, they will be alerted, so expect enemy reinforcements.
You’re first priority is to take out the 12 communication satellites. This is imperative! This is a synchronized assault, so there’s no room for failure. Once this is done, secure the area and take out any fighters you encounter. Good hunting!
In-game script
In the distance the 12 communications lie in wait. Circling around them in a patrol pattern are 2 groups of TPC fighters.
Command: Alright pilots, go after those communication satellites. We read two groups of enemy fighters. No mercy gentlemen…
Alpha 2: That’s affirmative command. So… You’re the new hot shot pilot eh? Well, we only got two rules at the Vipers, don’t miss, don’t die. We got a reputation to hold…
Alpha 3: Heh, don’t worry about him. That’s his way of greeting new pilots. Just keep cool and you’ll do all right.
Alpha 4: Sorry to break up the chit chat ladies, but we have company…
At this time the enemy fighters should have already been alerted to their presence and called in reinforcements. Two more enemy wings jump in. The battle ensues.
Alpha 3: Alpha 1, take care of those satellites. We’ll keep you covered.
The battle continues as Alpha 1 goes after the satellites. There might be some slight chatter between the other three GTVA fighters. When alpha 1 has destroyed half the satellites:
Command: Half way there! Keep it up!
When there are 5 satellites left a TPC cruiser emerges from subspace.
NPC cruiser: This is the TCP Warspite, stop you’re attack at once!
Alpha 4: Uh oh…
Command: This isn’t a problem, were sending in the GTD Independent. Alpha, take out the remaining satellites and fighters, then assist the Independent in taking out the Warspite.
Alpha 2: Affirmative! You heard him people, double time!
The player should complete all his objectives as well as destroy the Warspite. Then the success message appears.
Command: That’s it, the communication grid around the research station is down. Good work, you may return to base.
Alpha 2: Not bad, alpha 1… Not bad…
Alpha 3: Drinks are on me, guys!
Enter subspace.
Success debriefing
Well done! All groups report successful sorties! With the communications grid down, we have disrupted all communications to and from the station, substantially lowering the number of reinforcements we will encounter when we begin our main attack.
The appearance of the TPC cruiser is puzzling. It doesn’t seem to make sense to send a cruiser in to take care of a couple of fighters. However, you did well in destroying it. That makes one less for the TPC.
[if the secondary mission was completed]
Good work in destroying all the fighters! You proved yourself out there today. But don’t get too cocky, we’ve seen many rookies take out dozens of fighters on their first mission, only to get blown away on the next. Never forget that you’re part of a team, and not just some hot shot pilot.
Good work pilots, briefing at 0650 hours tomorrow. Until then, you got the night off. Dismissed.

just a little nitpicking.... the destruction of the Ancients came 8000 years ago, not 500,000. (look in the Bosch monologue. its there).
Other than that:
-
dark_4ce...you should do a freespace cartoon. Mik will let you use his purdy high poly cell shaded herc :D
-
Heh. Cartoons are one of the hardest things to do! :D
-
hi guys.
more important than the script (sorry if i'm contradicting anyone) is the storyline, the plot. if you can't even agree on that, then scrap it.
also, who's in charge? who volunteers to be 'director'? like dark 4ce said, that's a huuuuge job (i take drama at school and i have a bit of experience in things like this) and although you don't have to be good at anything, you need to see the whole thing really well.
once someone volunteers, i suggest they get a fixed team of people to work together. it's no good some people saying they'll do it and then passing their work to someone else. you're going to get a really scrappy style that will be extremely hard to put together.
anyway, someone volunteer to be Director.
there's my tuppence of opinion.
-
Personally, I'd think that (with his approval, of course) redoing Dark_4ce's cartoons in video format would be both fun and a good test of people's skills in ceertain areas. This way you have shorts (short shorts, at that!) that already have some camera angles defined as a starting point.

Oooh! Hey, thats a good idea! You guys got my approval! :D I actually had this as an idea a while ago, but I somehow forgot about it... :D

So, when can we expect a FreeSpace short movie to be available for download? Don't be NATO.
P.S: NATO = No Action Talk Only
