Or is the main HLP forum getting more and more hostile, with more and more spammers? I mean, every thread I go into now has either gone SO far off-topic, or there is a mini-flame war going on (witness the "Who Would Win" thread, and the "wEVIL!!!!!!!!!!" thread)
-
Well, what would be "on topic" in a more-or-less general discussion forum?
-
No, I mean "on-topic" in the actual thread.
-
What, like threads being derailed?
-
I think I've noticed the same. Or not. It's always been like that? Meh, I don't know.

Exactly.

So, has anyone else checked out the article on Wired about Massive, the crowd management software created for handling the Helms Deep battle in The Two Towers?
Just by way of, you know, an example. ;)

*strangles mikhael*
See what I mean?

Oh, and a Popular Science (http://www.popsci.com/popsci/science/article/0,12543,390918-1,00.html) on the same thing. Much better than the Wired one. :D
-
Wouldn't it be cool to create large space battles with this? ;7

Well I did say it was an example. ;) I was just helping illustrate your point.

 How ironic...
But yes, there have been some... hostilities. But who can take seriously a flame war over how you spell chihuahua?
-
Yea, have noticed a slite increase, but the admins here monitor the boards better than most forums and are on top of any ill issues against the community.. They are our police of the hlp boards.. No handcuffs, just the hammer of justice;)
-
Perhaps it's just that threads without much to discuss on the original topic shouldn't be made/should be closed after the value is gone? (wEVIL!!!!!! obviously was not worth discussing on after we found wEvil was fine...)
-
Meh. (http://www.newgrounds.com/assassin/tacobell/)

You guys do know that the nature of discussion is that of an untamed beast. Collectively, people determine the direction of a discussion by interacting in it. On topic is whats being discussed right now...and that can be changed with one mighty admin hammer of justice by closing it or by a proactive member swinging the discussion back to the original one or closer to it.
Discussion isn't bad...if it doesn't evolve than there is no point to having the discussion in the first place. On the other hand, if you've asked a legitimate question...then you do deserve a legitimate answer with as little disruption as possible. It goes both ways...

and i second that :D
what he's talking about i think, is on some threads the creator specifically puts "*whatever topic is* NO SPAM!!!" and people still go spam it :p

How ironic - discussing discussions. :p
-
I bet it'll turn into a discusion of discussing how appropriate it is to flame someone when they flame someone else discussing discussions about flaming discussing people.
-
I don't really read many threads on HLP (if it's not about modding, or info, or scfi-fi) then I skip it. So I never get bothered by these other thread. (if they like a spam/flame thread they can have it!) as for telling people not to spam  That's the WORST thing you can do... Like running a white train in NY (Tagged by end of the night)
Fianlly you have to remember the maturity level of users varies (and NO I'm not picking on the younger crowd, age has NOTHING to do with it)...
Admins have the final job/responsibility to leave a thread or shut it down. It makes to sense to agonize over one in the meantime. If it really bothers you, avoid it!

I'm in Communications Studies...one day it will be my profession to do just that. :D
-
Admins.... your job here?
-
Nah, it's a reasonably decent topic.
One comment though, remember there's a 'report post' button. It's a good way of getting action.
-
Can I test it out?? I've always wanted to do that.. seemed naughty for some reason though.

Trust me, it works. Abuse results in stupid titles being applied. :p
-

*thinks about it*
better not.
Thanks for the heads up! :)
