Title: FPS drops when...
Post by: Aggressor_Squad on December 14, 2002, 12:53:04 am
Intel Celeron 1.7GHZ
128mb DDR Ram
Intel 82845G 32mb 3d acclerator

After installing fs2 on this machine, all was going well. I selected 1072x780(Sry if i got the # wrong, you all know what I mean) as my resolution, and started up the game. Into the first mission, the frame rate was pretty good(Better then my old K6-2 thats for sure). But whenever someone speaks on the comm, the frame rate drops like hell. It appears that the Pictures that pop up everytime someone is on the comm is lagging my fps. However, i want to keep that HUD pic on. Does anyone have any idea why my fps would drop from 40-60 to like 20 when that happens?

Well that kind of rig is beyond anything fs2 retail even desires, let alone needs. :D SO methinks its an issue with ur soundcard drivers or hardware - wot s/card u have?

and a celeron doesnt help that much :D
Title: Suggestion
Post by: TopAce on December 23, 2002, 04:15:39 pm
I suggest you to turn the 'Voice' volume level to minimum. Do not worry! You will learn how to read a three row long message while fighting three Dragons, four Maras and two Juggernaughts. You can also try to disable the speaking portal in the Hud options screen. This is merely a suggestion, altough.

Don't mean to start on a n00b, but that sounds like a fairly last-ditch solution. Surely just turning down the voice volume would merely do what it said on the tin - the game would still play the voice files, just more quietly. There would be no reduction in CPU useage unless you actually disabled the voices (can you even do that?)

And how can you play the game without voices? Lack of voice-overs is the worst thing about user-made campaigns...

Thnx for all the comments all, but i just solved my problem. I bought more Ram and increased to to 512mbDDR. Freespace 2 and other games I play(such as Age of Mythology, Baldur's Gate 2) runs flawlessly now.

512 DDR is the only way to fly

Well, apart from my mate Pembo (http://www.dave.pemberton.btinternet.co.uk/beast/beast.html) who has four gig of RAM complete with Linux stored in the memory... :shaking:

The problem actually was the integrated videocard. since the system has to run everything rather then independently, (ie videocards and sound cards freeing ths system of memory), a gf2/3/4 or raedon woulda done u good.... and saved a buck or 2.
