Title: Ship model - GTD Angel
Post by: beatspete on December 16, 2002, 03:26:12 pm
So the name is a bit crap but i wasnt in a creative mood at the time.

http://www.angelfire.com/stars4/beatspete/angelgallery.html

This is my first model in the style of a freespace ship, its a destroyer designed to replace the hecate, though it could probably do with some more gun turrets.   :)

What do you think of -
A: the model itself.
B: the second image on the page, the lighting is designed so it appears to be in deep space.
C: the last image, i know the beams are a bit crap.

...unfortunatly you might not see much new from me for a while, thats my free evaluation finished for Rhino 3D and I'll have to be arsed learning something else :doubt:

A.  I like it. However those vertical finns need to be tweaked. Don't know, but they  don't look right.  Other than that,

B. Interesting. I think the lights illuminate a bit much perhaps.  Look at how the Enterprise was lit in ST1.  This is my first reaction to the pic, anyway.

C. The "nebula" needs work, or just removed. Maybe some more things going on.

Outstandingly awesome, original and an extremely good design.

good stuff... not opinions:

1. the ramp section coming from the large hump down to the middle could use atleast 2 more of those nice looking turrets.

2. if these arent added drop the hump a wee bit.

3. makes a good gunship ie: corvette class vessel.

4. i see a possibility with 3 fighter bays (or 2, the one in the opening section in the middle, and the bottom aft)

5. IS THIS A POF YET? i could do the turrets etc, not roatating turrets but i can POF this badboy if it needs the subsystems and stuff...

I'll give it a try.  I want to improve the gun barrels too, they are just cylenders at the moment.

It was always meant to be bigger than that, the scale of the lights and fighterbays put it roughyly destroyer size, maybee slightly smaller.

No, this is the ship model i've made, i'm not sure how to turn it into a POF.  Currrently its a .3dm file, i don't know how much use taht is to you but i'll happily give you it.

I'm not really sure what to do with them, but i'll have a think. The back ones, you mean?  Or the front?

Not a bad model.

Some of the textures look wierd to me, but the design is kinda fresh. on a scale of :blah:  to :D , I give it a :)

:p

Are the two foward beams BFGs?  I also agree that this would make an ok corvette perhaps.. doesn't look like a Destroyer to me.

There. Yet another thread I've graced with my presence. :thepimp:

Most of the surfaces are just the same texture stretched over each surface, Rhino doesnt really think to tile them on larger surface or whatever.  I'll look into sorting that out.

No, not bf greens, just bgreens, seems a bit out of scale.
I understand the corvete thing, i think the turrets are making it look smaller scale, i'm working on them at the mo.
Maybee a frigate size, ie the Iceni?

Very nice. You could class her as a next-generation Hecate. Like, the GTVA found the Hecate performed so well they simply took the same structural approach for the next generation of destroyer!

However, I already see its weak point  that hollow neck is just beggin for a Helios.

Thats a good point.  I'm at the cross roads of scaling it down to a corvete or keeping it as a destroyer.  If its a corvete the hangers will come off.  As a destroyer it would get more turret cover so should be ok... although could me an interesting oppertunity for some Sexp's in a mission, helios that area and the ship blows up or splits in two, etc.

From the site:
Its based vaugley round a Hecate Class Destroyer from the same game, and is my first attempt at a FS style ship.

With good reason ;)

I'm really impressed by this model (A) - especially it being a first attempt! It reminds me not just of the Hecate but also of the ubiquitous Asgard battleship - both being ships I love. :D Get that ship into FS2, pilot!

The second image (B, the beam image) is pretty decent - good work on the engines, and those beams could certainly be a fair deal worse! Nicely composed. Keep working at it if you want, you certainly have some potential - especially given the third image (C)! Beautifully rendered. 25 minutes is a very decent amount of time for that kind of detail. If the model/textures are detailed enough, consider a close-up shot for your next image (if you're planning a next image).

Keep it up!

Ah ha! I knew there was something else influencing it but i didn't know what.... you'd think i'd know where my own models come from, wouldn't you.

Well i'd thought about that but i don't know how to.  I've read sandwich's tutorial on turning rhino models into POF's but i don't have/cant find some of the software needed, plus freespace isnt installed to test it out. :blah:

...But if anyobe is intrested in doing it themselves PM me.

I'm not really sure where to go with it, i've thought about changing the rear vertical fins to a C shape but it doesnt look as good.  The turrets need work so i'll jazz them up a bit, plus i can do better with the textures.
Give me a week or so and i should have a few advances.

I would point you to Sandwich for that - his GVCa Amaunet is a beauty - but he's super-busy right now, and will be for a while I expect. What software do you need, exactly? I may be able to help out a little... :)

Well, that's good to hear. Just keep tinkering... getting it into FS2 would be the major milestone I'd go for though, I'm quite satisfied with the overall shape of the thing as-is. :) What's the polycount?
