Title: Dune games

Dune 1:

Dune 2:

Dune 2000:

Dune Emperor: Battle for Dune
(http://www.arrakis.co.uk/jpg/emporer.jpg)

I vote Dune 1... the original, the one that spawned so many other 'rpg's... such as warcraft, command and conquer, starcraft, age of empires, etc... where a person controls other troops, villagers, etc. and can tell them to mine minerals, attack, build, etc.

I apparently have the "Amiga" version of Dune 1

This guy's Dune 1 site is awesome... downloads, info, everything you need:
http://www.terravista.pt/nazare/4347/dune.html

These are the Dune 1 official MP3s from the "Spice Opera" album which is worth hundreds of dollars, it's incredibly rare... only a few of these MP3s were featured in-game, and they were in MIDI form.  My favorite are Chani's Eyes and Dune Theme and various others:

I see you forgot Tiberian Dawn.

The first book is good so far, but i've never played any of the games. Music is a little techno-ie.

Music is meant for in-game... if you play the game the music's very fitting  :)

Ahhh yes, the "Command and Conquer" series... i'll edit my post to include that :D

Weird. Just noticed there's a copy of Dune 1 standing right here, and yet I've never bothered to install it. Oh well, what can I do.

Send it to me?;7

Pfeh, with games, give me the old **** any day. Particularly now that I've got my old-**** computer up and running.

Played Dune II once, in a cheap BW takeoff mode. Loved it. Got Dune2k, 'cos it was cheaper and easier than getting a copy of 2, and I figured it was about the same. It was pretty much like every other Westwood game that way. Ah well- at least I get to run over Sardukar in tanks.

Dune 2 was the first computer game i ever played, back when i barely knew they existed ;)

I like emperor better than Dune 2/2k though.  More variety, makes you think a little more...

Dune 2k was a nice upgrade to 2, but it couldn't hold my interest enough for me to even finish the campaign...

only played dune2. dune1, I just sat there and watched my bro play it, it was more entertaining just watching at it than playing it it seems ( well, a cryo game, who would expect anything else? )
Dune2 was cool, but would have been better if there wasn't the unavoidable spoce shortage in the end of the mission, that forced you to attack before you're ready ( and resulted in loading the mission again and trying to attack with 5 more tanks, then, etc, etc, etc )

dune2. but only considerating the other games that were out at the same time. dune2k didn't have the same feeling at all.
dune1 wasn't made by westwood, and isn't an RTS either... however, it's a little more true to the book(s), I must say (that is, no ordos)...

Dune 2, without a doubt. This game was to RTS what Doom was to FPS.

eh? When I played there was a crapload of spice on the map for the last missions for all three sides, enough to go well beyond the unit limit. (btw it is actually possible to capture enemy stuff in this, so I had a combination of devastators and sonic tanks while playing harkonnen :D)

But I like to put missile turrets everywhere :p
I don't think you can capture units with harkonen, that'd be a bit unfair to the ordos which had that as their special weapon... I did have devastators and sonic tanks with ordos tho :p

I voted Emperor because I feel the graphics and gameplay beats the rest hands down. I don't have the patience to play Dune. Dune 2 was a hit at its time but having to select units one by one was very tedious. Also, missle turrets around the perimeter of your base and nothing, not even sandworms can survive.

Dune 2000 to me was jjust Dune 2 but with slightly better graphics and the ability to select multiple units a la Command & Conquer. But somehow, I feel the rocks and the sand seem to blend too much until it is kind of the same colour.

Emperor is best because they allow you to ally with various factions to boast your armies. New weapons, new units and the ability to recieve reinforcements. Reminds me of Risk board game.

I've only played Dune 2 and Dune 2000. And, I've not played Dune 2 for years, but I've played 2k just a year ago.

So, my option might be biased, but I'd say 2k. I can't remember the Dune 2 too well, anyway.

Also voted emperor.

I just don't think the original Dune is that good.
Dune 2 is hard, because the graphics maybe. Dune 2k is just boring and aged...

Of the Dune games I'd have to say Emperor seeing it's the only one I've played... :p But in terms of graphcis/units it seems to beat the rest anyway.

However Emperor has incredibly shoddy pathfinding AI...

Well, think of what the games were at their time. Sure, you couldn't select multiple units in Dune 2 and the AI was an idiot, but at the time nobody gave a second thought to that since you could do so much other stuff that nobody had seen before. (same thing like in Doom; you couldn't look up or down, but nobody cared about that back then :D) Although regarding the AI, even now after a decade, the game world still has not come very far... :p

Eh? No. Dune 2 was to RTS what Wolfenstien was to FPS... C&C: Tib. Dawn was the Doom equivalent.

I voted Emperor: BFD (Note: It's not Dune Emperor - it's just plain Emperor), because I love having 3 different and varied sides. The extra alliances just make it even cooler.

But I must say that Dune 2 was probably the game I played the most - ever. Originally on a 386SX 25mhz laptop with a greyscale screen (no color!!), and then on a full color, 14" ViewSonic connected to a 486DX2-66! Wow, that was sooooo awesome!

no it's not coz wolfenstein was actually the first FPS.
Dune2 is not the first RTS, there was siege before, and even before one console game ( tho I don't even want to imagine a RTS on a console of that "era"... )

I'd create another login from a friend's house and then proceed to post every single Machina Terra file I have on this HD. I don't know how that'd help it, but Styxx wouldn't be very happy.

I'm not talking about "who was first", I'm talking about the impact each game had on gamers' interest in that particular genre. Wolfenstein introduced the FPS genre and was a hit because of it's originality; Doom popularized the genre and added a few crucial innovations.

Same with the Dune 2 / C&C games: Dune 2 was the game that intoduced RTS gaming to the masses, and C&C carried that banner further on with innovative features such as unit grouping, controllable air units, and multi-selections.

True true.

Then I guess the RTS equivalent of Quake 2 would be Warcraft 3 then.:D

But back to the topic on Dune games.

I think the one thing Emperor suffers from is the ease with which buildings can be destroyed.

And the lack of very beautiful actresses in skimpy outfits. A very good example would be the one Carrie Fisher a.k.a Leia wore in Return of the Jedi.:p

Yeah but the world in general suffers from a lack of those. I mean I look out of my window and I can`t even see one!

As far as the original topic goes I`ve played Dune 1 & 2 a lot and dune 2000 briefly.

I think dune 1 was a little to easy but had a great plotline and was fun to play. As for dune 2 I absolutely loved it.

Seriously speaking, I would like to see a next Dune game in the same format as Dune 1. But this time, the story would be set in the aftermath of Emperor. Alliances can be made and there are territories. It would be something like Rommance of the Three Kingdoms line of game series. It would be fun and addictive I think.:)

heh... if there was a sequel, I would want it to follow the books. Like the story in Dune Messiah or something. But that's a fairly short book. Children of Dune'd do fine too.

Better for me. Unfortunately for them, I had a whole lot of tanks so I either blasted them to oblivion or squished them into the Arrakian sand.:D

In Emperor, I think the Sardukar are uncrushable is it? And also, why am I unable to make veteran units return to the factory or barracks?

Well, I believe they have a game like that called Battlegrounds: Clone wars on shelves now...
