Title: Anyone made a Valkyrie mk.2?
Post by: aldo_14 on September 19, 2001, 08:10:00 am
(I just got Fs1 yesterday, and I've developped a soft spot for the Valkyrie  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) )

I have a model that is good for a Valkyrie mk.2 - similar design, etc - and was wondering if someone had made a Mk.2 version before I name it (Otherwise it'll be called the 'Safat')

aaaaaah good  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) The valkyrie is the best freespace fighter ever  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
I don't think there's any valkyrie Mk2, my banshee was supposed to be a valk DH, but it ended up too different, so go on  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
btw, any pic?

normally I don't post them till  i've mapped and tested it, but why the hell not    (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

It's in (very) early mapping - I'm still undecided on model changes at the moment - I may chop off and remodel the cockpit / neck after looking at this....

(edit)  you can't really see the 2 rearmost eninges, as they have a black map - their mounted just above the centre-rear of the ship.

Nope, no Valk Mk2 - so it's all good to go  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) How are you finding FS1, btw? Good, right?  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

for a valk, go with 4 reactors. the central part should be more bulky, too (but not too much). and try to make a glass cockpit, for once  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Well, I said it wasn't mapped....the cockpit will prob. be abubble type, with a single centre strut.  I'm not sure about the nose, or the width of the front.  The orignal valk was quite thin though - the misisle tubes and engines bulked it up a bit, so I'm going for the same effect...I'm also not sure I can be arsed shifting the UV for a new veriosn after it took me the best part of an hour to assign and save the templates for this one.

I may make 2 verions, one a bomber variant with virtually no wings (extra rack of missile tubes), and 'winglets' on the front nose.

Oh, and FS1 rocks... very-old style though, you feel much more fragile in that little Valk / Apollo.  i miss the Hornet though.

It... looks cool  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Oh yeah... there's a 'bulked up' bit behing the missile racks, covered by the wings / engines, that makes it a bit less anorexic looking.

I actually think its a fairly dodgy model (cockpit was a nightmare to model, as were the wings), but I think it'll look good with a decent mapping job.

You could get away with using an adapted old Valkyrie skin, rather than making up a new nextgen one. It would look pretty cool...  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Nah... the  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/v.gif) maps are actually lower res than the ones I can make for this(with UVWrapper), even if they are better optimised and they only need one per ship... besides which, i need the practice.

I might keep a similar colour scheme, though.  And the first Valk has cool wee red wingtip lights which appear to 'flash' ingame (something to do with $ND or changing distances - it looks good, anyway).  I want to put a 'snarl' on the front, even if it's not true to the original.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Frankly, I'd rather see the Angel Scout.

You know, most people around here develop new ships for events after FS2 (or FS1) while I've been developing the whole universe for before the Great War.  Odd, isn't it?

Heheh, i was playing around with my FS1 demo ships (i dont own the ful version) and i thourt "mmmmm, this would make a good pirate ship for freespace 2." So for about an hour today I made the Valkyrie rusty and gave it a dodgy flacky paint job.

  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/spineyes.gif)  i love this piccy

Venom made an unloded Angel Scout a while back, I think.

Personally, i'd like to work on a big T-V war project with new ships like the Angel and predecessors of the Faustus, Fenris, Apollo, etc (first space-faring warships) once I've finished this project

But post capella offers the most opportunities for 'interesting' designs, and technological innovations.

NB: New model version;

I completely redid the front section to closer match the original, moved the wingtips back and down, and widened the main body.

I actually prefer this to the other version, simply as the cockpit is better modelled.

Just before I decided to make Over the Top, I wonder which on I would do: the T/V war, ot Over the Top. My idea for the T/V war plot was that the player was flying as a test pilot, trying new technologies (with sexp to make subsystem go dead at the worst moment and so on), but tryiong super woozzy weapons, super powerful, but tweaky to use, and eventually discarded fighters ( imagine if the SOC didn't like the Erynies, for exemple)

glad you modified the wings. It looked like a plucked chiken before.

I love the look of this model, especially the way you've adapted the wings. There is only one problem that I can spot though and that's the side view... I think it's too straight. Perhaps if you tilt the cockpit downwards slightly or something... It's a bit too flat.

But I really love this design, I can't wait to see it in action.

Plus I would love to play a V-T war campaign... That would be awesome. No shields, no beams, no flak, but still using the FS2 engine, it would still look amazing! Perhaps you could have one ship using some kind of thermal laser or something... I might have a go at making some personal V-T war missions tonight. I'm having some troubles with mission making at the moment and it's really getting on my nerves, so I'm sure no-one would be interested in my missions.

Anyway, can't wait to see the Valkyrie Mk2!

? no, the perseus is a new interceptor, but it's not from the same manufacturer or anything (I think), andif it's called perseus, it's because it's not the valk2, right? otherwise the ulysses is the appollo , and the ursa is the medusa mk2... that would make no snese, huh?

In the Command Breifing it was stated that the Perseus was the replacement of the older Valkyrie Interceptors. So it's not a Valk-Mk2, it's a new Interceptor.

Well, I actually have a plot for a 14 Year War campaign, as well as ideas for the ships, weapons and how to get the mess to work without slamming people completely.  When, and if, you guys finish your own campaigns, I'd be willing the help with the foundations of a 14 Year War campaign.

I've made my own 14-year V-T war plot too.

"I may chop off and remodel the cockpit / neck after looking at this...."

/me waves arms. Hey over here!!!

I have been needing a souped up Valkery for a while now but I planned more of a Tiger Shark feel to it. I wanted the big shark teeth on it. Anyways, I spent the day drawing up a cockpit and nose. I have plans also to set it up as an interceptor/light bomber type. It will be more of a multipurpose. I was thinking maybe u would like my cockpit design and maybe u and I could work together on it? I could really use a new Valkery but I needed a certain design.

The most recent picture is the final, bar 2 'winglets' I've added to the sides of the cockpit... I've done about 70% of the mapping now, and it looks really cool   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif), so I don't want to remodel it.

The model will be used in my campaign in some form, and I'll definately be releasing it once it's finished (in 2-3 days hopefully).

Also, I've uploaded a zip file with the first version I made (top post, bout 3 down), partly mapped, with the obj file, mtl file and the (unfinished) maps for anyone who wants to make an alternative version (note you'll need to convert to cob to finish it for conversion)...

goto http://homepage.ntlworld.com/g.white19/valk2-old.zip ("http://homepage.ntlworld.com/g.white19/valk2-old.zip")  (300-ish Kb).... it should fairly easy to finish the textures...

and the Perseus is a seperate fighter, but I'd guess it was originally intended to be the mk.II before it was renamed.
