Title: mouse scroll for throttle controll
Post by: Nuke on December 20, 2002, 11:53:18 am
i just got me a kick ass mouse that has a little trackball (in place of the mouse wheel) that you can use to scroll windows and crap. i realized that freespace doesnt make use of the scroll wheel on most mice. i was wondering if you could tweak the code to allow binding of axes and buttons to the mouse wheel (or 2 axis track ball in my case). you could use it as say a relative throttle axis or to switch weapons and the like. i rely mainly on the joystick, but improved mouse support would be cool.

That is indeed a good idea.

There, that has earned this thread some credibility, more people should reply now.

Call me an asshole, but there are only two ways to fly a fighter in Freespace:  A joystick and a keyboard.  A mouse is for Minesweeper and First Person Shooters, nothing more.

I use a mouse. Optical, with a scroll wheel. I think it would be great to have it bindable.

Same here. I don't fly as good for some reason on a joystick. :ick:

Sounds like a good idea to me. :)

You, sir, are an asshole. [you asked for it]

Whilst I agree with you on the proper use of mice in gaming, this thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,11801.0.html) shows that plenty of people still use other control hardware succesfully and happily. Making the game more accessible by expanding the existing control set to take advantage of their chosen hardware can only improve their enjoyment of the game while not detracting from your enjoyment of the game. In short, its not a bad idea, and if my input counts for anything [doubtful], then I say do it.

Seconded. As everyone knows, the true freaks of nature are the keyboard-only players.

No no no, it is they who use their psi powers to telekinesify the keys on the keyboard.  (I've been playing SS2 again.)

**** the mouse, i just got my hot-rod laptop and it kicks ass. though i find that it would be difficult to lug around my gargantuan saitek x36 game controller so i can play freespace on the bus. mouse control is now a must.

we also need a mouse mode that resembles the way games like privateer 2 use the mouse (its offset from the center determining how fast you go in the given direction).

also critical is support for extra mouse buttons and 4 way scrollers, for the real control freaks out there.

control freak - (nerdian) someone who has to have a superior interface whith their hardware, and would buy a nuro-interlink if they had the money.

We need to make all those mice with a zillion buttons out there supported. Those internet back-forward buttons would do well when changing weapons.

Damn right, only trouble is sometimes you'd lose the centre, and your ship would start careening all over the fricking place.
