Title: PXO cheating
Post by: Stealth on December 25, 2002, 08:38:47 pm
heehehehheheheheh

i went to the FS2 full version PXO stats page, and wow, there's like 40 "Admiral Poseidon", "Admiral Zeus", "Admiral Loki", etc.

i'd never really noticed that, a few months ago (when i last checked) there was "Admiral i_can_cheat" or something like that, but now there's much much more!  has anyone noticed that?  does anyone know who it is?

... does anyone know if PXO will (ever) get rid of those names?

.........Does anyone care?

We all know it's possible to cheat. We all know how to cheat. We all know that points mean **** and people are evaluated through kills and mission-time and reputation and skill and not some arbitrary number.

Kind of funny (?) so many ppl feel they need to try those tricks.
Well, at least it isn't completely dead :D (i think most, if not all of those have appeared in the last 6 months)

Don't kid yourself an0n, you don't know how to do it.
i'll bet he's going to say "oh yeah, you just hack the proxy server and blah blah blah... watch
And yes, people should be evaluated through kills, missions, kills per mission, etc.  don't pull another "stats mean nothing"... on starcraft perhaps they do, cause you can play 400 comp stomps, but on Freespace, they actually do, and if you're good, your stats show it

Only too a point. Some ppl back in the day got points by having friends cover them until they got a killing shot on the cap ships. Until that point they just sat back and dodged fighters.

Others just had a ****load of free time to play game after game after game until they'd tallied up enough points for admiral.

I've seen so many high ranks on PXO get smacked all over the place during a SW match it was just sad. Some of the best pilots I've ever gamed with on PXO were about commander ....a few commadore.

yeah, i'm sure a lot of you remember "Unstoppable" from FS1... the only multiplayer mission you had to play on "Insane" to get the medal (and 5000 points :) )

but i'm talking about getting 12,500,000 points in one mission... one kill.

True....what I was getting at was that points don't truely prove who's good and who's better. The majority of players on PXO (in its popular days since these days it's less than 10% of what it used to be) that had high ranks weren't even close to the best pilots.  Alot were,... just not the majority.

Probably one of the notorious PXO outcasts...

I agree that the rank is pretty meaningless even if there were no cheaters simply due to the way the kill/point system works. Although TvT missions are generally harder than co-op's, the co-ops yield hundreds of times the points. I actually should be just a captain or something if it worked correctly, since I played it mostly when I was still on a 56k (a slow one at that) and thus only bombing worked well, but it gives you points for doing almost nothing. :p :D

even if it wasn't an admin, i assume it's obviously pretty easy to get an incredibly high rank with just one kill

Well, those guys are all some kind of cheaters (there is a known problem in the validation process that lets one do what they did), but yeah, it is indeed pretty easy to do it according to the rules if you just have a lot of patience.

oh...

i know FS1 has "Myst"... one mission and a rear admiral, whadaya know lol!
... i wonder if he cheated?

Post by: CP5670 on December 26, 2002, 03:59:09 pm
yeah, all those one-mission guys are definitely cheaters. :p To do it without cheating you just need to play certain missions over and over again thousands of times, which becomes really easy after a while but takes forever. :D

yeah, i remember back in the day, myself and Hurricane playing "Unstoppable" on Insane over and over and over... one time i'd cover him and get kills, and he'd get the destroyer, and vice-versa.

i don't think i've ever played it on anything but Insane lol

It's so hard trying to judge a pilot's skills just based off their stats. Knowing that points don't matter is easy enough, but then evaluating their kill count to missions played ratio was hard. I think good pilots who played TvT more often had somewhere between 13-20 kills per mission. Anything above 25 was probably a coop player. Primary and Secondary accuracy helped a bit, with experts hanging around 10-15% (the beauty of ms, you miss so much lol).

Dunno, it's really hard to evaluate because being the host (or mainly ping) in a TvT can make a huge difference. Usually the best I would ever get was around 300, and that's no fun against a team of pilots who have 100-200. Also, it really depends on who you play. I can say from experience that playing in a 4v4 against squads like DW and DA did not result in a lot of kills. Usually in normal TvTs squad members play together, and if  you were unlucky enough to be stuck on the other side with the newbs (back when we still had a lot of newb pilots), it was a great learning experience, but nothing to help your stats lol.

Well pfffft

I flew with guys who were great one on one, but couldn't handle it in a big ol' melee. Didn't have the sense of what was around them, I know guys who could light up a group of fighters, but lose a duel every time. Guys could take out a destroyer in under a minute but couldnt defend anything worth a damn.

Every pilot is different, and you need all kinds. Score just tells you who kills the most stuff more often.

Quite frankly I'd rather have the Lt who can hold off a squad of Herc2s than the Admiral who's done RI 6,000,000 times.

Don't tempt me, I may go on a mission to recover my computer and play again.

Might be worth it to show some newbs how us old chaps fly. Perhaps see some people who remember me......
