I've got a shed load of audio files in .aif format. The problem is I have no way to listen to them. Does anyone know of a program that can read them? A program that could convert them into .mp3 or .wav format would be better, but I'll gladly take any advice.
-
Uh, Windows Media Player plays AIFF files. :wtf:
-
If they're old/gay enough to be in .aif format then they're not worth playing.
I mean, how many good tracks have you seen in recent years in even .wav format?
-
Well, if you managed to wither that hail of sarcasm and still want to convert the files, try GoldWave (www.goldwave.com)
-
DG, do you even know what sarcasm is?
Just asking, since my response was factual, and an-zero-n's was (as usual) outright insulting. I see no evidence of sarcasm.

*plays to expected behaviour*
Yeah, *****!

It should but it doesn't. If it did then I wouldn't be asking for help ;)

You said you have "no way of listening to them"... not that the expected way isn't working.
So, what happens when you try to play them in WMP?
Have you tried WinAmp, or QuickTime?

In WMP I get a message that says: no combination of filters could be found to render the stream
In WinAmp I get: Compressed AIFC files other than 4-bit IMA ADPCM are not supported.
In QuickTime it doesn't even give me a message it just doesn't work.
-
Which version of WinAmp are you trying? 2.x or 3.x?
-
Shouldn't matter. IIRC 2 and 3 both use the same plugins.
Would you mind sending me one of these files?
And the last time you listened to them, how did you do it?

Sent.
I'm not realy sure what they are, I'm just trying to get them to play.

OK, got them playing in WinAmp. Hooray. I wish I knew how to convert them though......any one know how?

It can't read those files and I have no idea how to use that prog. If you feel like giving me a basic walk-through that'd be awsome.

*smacks forhead*
Right. Install Goldwave. Download an install the LameWin thingy, which can also be found on the GoldWave page (LameWin will let you encode MP3 files). Open your file in GoldWave. Save your file as an MP3. Offer me a cookie.
Course, I'm assuming GoldWave can read aifs, but I don't se why it shouldnt...
[EDIT] Oh, hold on, you say that GoldWave won't read aif files? Hmm... wanna send me one and see what happens? According to GoldWave, it can open them...
-
Ahh, found the problem. These are NOT standard AIFF files. They're proprietary-format Relic AIFFs.
Shame on you.
Anyway, to write anything out to a WAV file from Winamp, just change the Output plugin to the Nullsoft Disk Writer.

I didn't know you could do that...cool...
-
Think he can handle Winamp plugins?
Anyway Bri, if you do manage to get hold of the wav files, you can easily use GoldWave to convert them to MP3
[EDIT] So what happens if you play a movie in WA3 with this plugin? Does the audio get saved as a wav?

you too, huh?
-
Bah on WA3. If I wanted a bloated all-in-one "media center" with incomprehensible artfag freeform skins, I'd have downloaded WMP7 already.
-
I hate WinAmp3. That ****ting play-list selector thingy means you can only see about the first 6 letters of any track title. And the menu's suck too. WA2 you could just double-click on Add or Del and because the bottom selectionin the menu was over-layed onto the button it'd load up the little selector window, but now you've gotta move the mouse and ****.
I like the new demo file though: "Llama tested........Mother approved."
-
Thanks for all the help guys but I figured it out with WinAmp....that plugin selector thingy is actualy pretty cool once you figure out how to use it. :)

Pressing buttons and seeing what happens is, was, and always shall be A1-SUPAR!!!!1
