Title: The Lens Flare thread
Post by: Stunaep on December 30, 2002, 05:16:01 pm
For all of you derailing my topic with discussions of lens flares, here is where you'll want to come.

Ask away and let the renderers answer!

That'd be me :D

And I already got everything working. I was just trying to create different engine glows but got stuck with radius parameters.

I see. Well that's like all other lens flare thingys in relative size of the screen, the render, the image, whatever you call it. Are you using Video Post?

I have the same problem. When I use Video Post it doesnt show up in a still render. Then when I use effects I cant adjust color/intensity. I am using Max 5.0

video post effects works only with the video post renderer, the "running guy" icon if you don't know already, and won't show up in the basic renderer.

See, that's what got me for a long time.

I still can't get firey and gaseous to work with the damn glows though.

Inferno? to what part of the flare are you applying them to?

.....Glows.

It just gives a ****ty even glow. I want fire dammit! I demand to have at least one area in which I can out-do the animal kingdom.

assign Inferno to an effect (usually to the glow or secondary flare) in the general parameters.

try manipulating the transparency and colour values, also radial transparency.

OK, just let's say for a moment that lens flares suck. This is one of my renders that I just made for testing some lens effects:

And this is the same render when removing all the lens effects:

:)

lens flares can be good or bad, you simply must use them tastefully. a slight glow and two sharp rays coming out of an engine are okay, but don't put in a huge bright halo, eight long bright rays, and 16 colorful reflections (line of little round things)

The render doesn't suck (it's quite nice, actually), but funnily enough, I rendered many months ago the opposite side of that render... ;)

Errr, how can I render to file using video post effects?

And how can I change the FPS?

I think both Deimos related renders are awesome, but Setekh has an advantage here because he has a few tricks in his program. Right? ;) By the way Setekh, how did you create that canvas effect? I saw it on many of your renders. It's as though it was made on real canvas not on a PC.

There are so many things to render. When I left I had thousands of ideas for shots I wanted to do, but I simply lacked the time... boy, I really wanted to do a comm node explosion as in Into The Lions' Den, but I didn't end up figuring out how to make the cloud mass satisfying. ;)

Tricks? Au contraire, I think what I run is far weaker than the commercial stuff - it would be ludicrous to suggest otherwise - it's just that I know every single feature in what I use, so I can use it very effectively. And... canvas effect? The which? :nervous:
