Title: Diamond Geezer's Book Review
Post by: diamondgeezer on December 31, 2002, 04:14:33 am
Well, I just finished reading the latest Discworld book, Night Watch. By all the gods... Pratchett really does get better with every one he writes.

The odd thing is, for a Discworld book, it didn't really have any of the laugh-out-loud moments you come to expect, or even running gags. The humour was there, of course, and dark to the point of being pitch black... but this is the first Discworld bok that was - unexpectedly - very moving.

Of course, I'm speaking from the point of view of someone who's known Sam Vimes rather well for, what, five books? But all the same, even if you've never read a Discworld story before I urge you to investigate this one (unless, like Razor_Blade, you're allergic to reading).

The feeling I got from reading it is like... you know the Dire Straits song, Brother in Arms? When you see the video to that song, and you see the soldiers blinded by gas, all lined up, and your chin might go a bit wobbley... it's the text equivilent of that feeling, but with the Pratchett humour which seems to make it work better rather than trivialise it.

To sum it up: Wow. Read it.:yes::yes::yes::yes:/5
