Title: Creepy......
Post by: Shrike on January 02, 2003, 08:00:51 am
My computer is playing MP3s without me having an MP3 player running, or indeed any sign of an active process in my task manager.  It's taking up no processor cycles or anything.  It's like the MP3s were loaded into my sound card and are playing from there.  In fact, I can't stop them from playing.

Not the first time this has happened, either.  The only way to fix it is to reboot.  What the hell is going on with my computer?

Damned reds, they get into everything!

What OS? And post a screenshot (GIF, not JPG!!!!) of your task manager's process viewer.

This was taken during the middle of one of the songs.  Running Win2k.  The high memory usage is because I have MAX running as well.

Sounds like another episode from the X-Files ;)

Well, if you don't see any stuff running there it's gotta be the sound card. These things sometimes just blow up.

This has happened to me too. I think its something to do with the way the windows hardware abstraction layer deals with audio, tho I can't be more specific 'cos I don't know.

If you can isolate them to certain mp3 files or at least a certain folder....try renaming it. It's a **** way to fix it... but any port in a storm eh ?

No. If it isn't moving it plays Frank Sinatra "Srangers in the night" When moving there are two options: One is "Row the boat", other is "**** the millennium" by Scooter. :D

Same thing's happened to me with WinAmp, the newest version - I switched back to the old one (forget version number). I think it happens when you close it by right-clicking on the system-tray icon and say "exit" or something. Try closing it by maximizing and pressing the "X" (top-right) instead.

*Hates winamp3*

It's worse than the original.. it has the movie player, but it is crap. Not to mention Winamp3 makes the music quieter for some reason.. and stutter and takes up more space and bleh..

*Hugs winamps original*

Yeah, I still use Winamp original....mostly because it loads faster and not for those other reasons.

By the way, does anyone know if there is a way to disable that "update available" message? I am also using an older version of Winamp (2.78) but it pops up a window every day (when I start it) saying that there is a new version out.
Title: Creepy......
Post by: Levyathan on January 03, 2003, 01:02:22 am
This is so weird. I was about to post saying how I have that same version (2.78) and it had never displayed any message to me. Before that, I opened it to check if that was the actual version, and for the first time it displayed that update message. Probably will display it every day from now on.

And it's all your fault! :D

Media Player 9 series is A1-SUPAR. It's pretty fast, cool but easy to use interface, WOW effects which basically adds TruBass plus dozens of plugins of course...

What is this Media Player 9 like? I have 7 and I think it kind of sucks simply because it is an incredible resource hog compared to version 6 and is also much slower. Too flashy for my tastes, too; 6 was far superior.

Mmm... that's not really the best picture of her ever, though. Mostly, you just notice the great extents she went through to look "white", when she looks much hotter the way she is normally... if there is such a thing as looking normally for a pop star.

You've piqued my interest with this T.A.T.U so i'm gonna take a listen. If it's crap however I shall do many unspeakable things to you, symptoms may include severe internal bleeding and a ruptured sense of self esteem.

Also MP9 is Satan himself's media player. If you check the about box it laughs at you demonically.

WMP9 uses about 8mb of RAM, and is about the same speed as 7. I don't remember 6 though, all I remember is 6.4; which was nice, but it could never detect my video codecs properly. :blah:

As for the fly- try sniping it with a rubber band. What was an irritating housefly can become hours of entertainment. Don't even bother trying to hit it in midair- I'm pretty sure it's next to impossible, and odds are you'd just knock it around a bit, instead of knocking it out or killing it (depending on the range, you can do either. I didn't even know flies COULD be knocked out until one particularly slow day).:D

Well it either left or went to sleep. I hit it a few tiems with my tv remote, but it didn't kill it. I finally pulled out my laser pointer (that I bought for $.50 at the local Ghetto Bowling alley mind you) and beither blinded the ****er or gave it a headache.. I turned on the bath room light hoping he'd go in there, I'll go turn the fan on when i brush my teeth, hopefully dice him up a bit ;7

Couldn't find any rubber bands :(

In the army on long guard shifts I'd turn on the big spotlight, which generates a ton of heat as well. I'd then place it pointing directly up, and wait until a fly landed on it. Once it did, just place a glass over it and let it start to twitch and writhe in the increasingly unbearable heat... it was hilarious - at one point the fly's brain I think would start misfiring all its neurons, and the fly would start going into violent convulsions, buzzing around on its back like mad... only lasted a few seconds, though.

You have a CD in the CD drive, don't you...

because occasionally it will play CDs without a program, and the only way to change tracks is press the ">>" button on the CD drive, if you know what i mean.  also if you have CDs set to play (autorun) then they start automatically at startup

also, what do you have as your default MP3 player... are you sure these are MP3s?

don't make me look like a fool Shrike, that's not nice when someone's trying to help you.  I'm not the one that's asking for help.  When someone helps you, you don't act sarcastic.

you said:
Quote

My computer is playing MP3s without me having an MP3 player running, or indeed any sign of an active process in my task manager.

My question was how do you know they're MP3s!?  For all you know they could be OGG, WMA, MP1s, anything.  If it doesn't show you what's playing, you don't know what it could be.
I'll ignore your sarcasm and keep trying to help.

1)  Is it playing songs you have on your computer?  or music you've never heard before.
2)  Do you have a CD in your drive
3)  What program is set to play Mp3s by default?  what program do you use to play Mp3s (if different from default)
4) What OS

I'll ignore your sarcasm and keep trying to help.

And about a dozen posts down, when asked if it was repeating the same songs, I said:

Yeah, it plays the list I had in winamp when I closed it earlier.
I know they were MP3s because I had been listening to them earlier.  I turned off Winamp and the speakers, left, then when I came back (a couple hours later) and turned on the speaker, ready to play more music, the MP3s I had been listening to before were playing.

You're the one who's assuming I'm ignorant and that I wouldn't know what they were.  I specifically said MP3s because it was MP3s I have.  If it had just been random stuff I'd have said sound or music.

ok, i stand corrected on the part about not knowing the winamp playlist (on a thread 3 pages long at the time, which has moved from helping you (for about 10 posts) to lesbians, i just looked at the first post, and tried to help from there)... but nonetheless, you should try to appreciate people who're trying to help you.

one sec, let me try some stuff.

Well, it's been rebooted, so it's sort of irrelevant now..... just a weird event in my life.  One of many.

don't lock the thread yet, i'm going to post the answer here in a few minutes or hours anyway, so if this ever comes up again you can look here.

so it's gone permanently?  it disappeared?  i hope the problem didn't just happen once, and disappeared when you rebooted once

How often do I reboot?  Good question.  Not too often actually.  'Weekly' level I'd say.  Winamp is V3.0.  And I don't remember what the agent is.

Shrike:

System specs please!
(including: Windows OS, sound card/chip details, DirectX version)

Does the problem exist with both WaveOut and DirectSound Output plugins?
(Winamp -> Prefs -> Plugins -> Output)

Have you installed the official wa2update patch for all latest versions of the default input/output plugins?

:)
