Title: Shield HUD Icon Hitpoints Counter
Post by: Rampage on January 03, 2003, 05:23:34 pm
I want to propose an idea:

The HUD shield icon should be able to give a prediction of the targeted ship's or your own hull strength.  My idea is that make the ship in the HUD shield icon take on a red hue as the target takes damage.  For example, a ship at 100% hull would have the icon's default color. (Mine is gray.)  As the ship takes damage, the icon will show the icon colored red more and more.  By the time when the ship's hull strength gets down to, say, 10%, the icon is almost COMPLETELY red.

How do you guys like it?

The FS2 HUD is monochrome. This conflicts with that.

But it can also take on any color the player wishes to.  So it's possible.

Neat little feature but far from worth the effort if you ask me; we already have a nice little gauge on the target rendering screen.

The way it is now works for me.

Right now, I think having the precise hull integrity percentage in the bottom left hand corner is fine enough for me. I'd like to have damage expressed more visually - engines cutting out, and more dramatic use of the damage gas trails (both of which are typified by Lt. Ash's Apollo in the FS1 intro) - and I'd like to avoid interrupting the monochrome interface, which I think looks pretty good as is. ;)

I agree with this.  I'd like to see more work done to visually show us the damage than a duplicate HUD indicator.

If anything is going to be added to the damage display of enemy fighters, IMHO it should be some way of visually representing what subsystems have been destroyed. For example, destroying the navigations subsystem of a ship could display an "N" within a diamond; destroying the sensors subsystem could result in an "S" being displayed, superimposed over a triangle, etc. It can be a pain to toggle through the subsystems on a ship to see which are destroyed.

If it comes between that and Setekh's damage effects, though, the effects are far superior.
