I'm terrible with names so they'll go without for the time being.
The first is a destroyer.
It's 2004 poly's as is.
It's designed around FS2's capship combat ai.
This AI tells it to continuously circle the opponent while firing it's weapons as soon as it can close within 2 or so.
So I designed a ship that hosts it's weapons off to it's sides.
Yes, the large green area is a rotating subsytem like the Bab5 destroyers and the solar panel on the faustus.
http://www.furnation.com/corwyn/mecha/destroy1.jpg (//"http://www.furnation.com/corwyn/mecha/destroy1.jpg")
The dual banks of weapons shown are:
BGreen, long range flak, aaaf, heavy flak, aaaf, BGreen
BGreen, aaaf, infyrno, aaaf, infyrno, BGReen
The one by itself on the rear there is a aaaf as well.
The one barely visible next to the nose is a TerSlash www.furnation.com/corwyn/mecha/destroy2.jpg (//"http://www.furnation.com/corwyn/mecha/destroy2.jpg")
www.furnation.com/corwyn/mecha/destroy3.jpg (//"http://www.furnation.com/corwyn/mecha/destroy3.jpg")
Angled Close up
www.furnation.com/corwyn/mecha/destroy4.jpg (//"http://www.furnation.com/corwyn/mecha/destroy4.jpg")
Engine shot
Now, the next is what I call a strike carrier.
She's slightly larger than the fenris/leviathan, but can support 4 wings of fighters or two wings of bombers.
Sporting only 2 aaf, two heavy flak, two long range flak and 3 standard terran-turret lasers.
She's light on armor and weapons but has a top speed of 45kph, making her faster than any cruiser or corvette out there.
But being able to support any fighter or bomber changes it's damaging capability dramatically.
And as we all know, all any ship needs to do is carry alpha one and it's survivability goes up dramaticaly. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Side shot

An angled shot showing some of the flight bay/deck.

Size comparison to a Diemos
www.furnation.com/corwyn/mecha/carrier4.jpg (//"http://www.furnation.com/corwyn/mecha/carrier4.jpg")
Frontal angle, and yes, that horribly skinned ship coming out of it's side is a ursa.
For some reason if I have more than a few ships in there, the skinning gets really screwed up.
www.furnation.com/corwyn/mecha/carrier5.jpg (//"http://www.furnation.com/corwyn/mecha/carrier5.jpg")
Rear/engine shot.
Any suggestions? And NO, that is not the final skin for the carrier.

Thanks for showing the pics correctly Setekh, I have no clue WTF happened there.
And now it's telling me I can't have more than 8 images when I edited it down to 8.

Wow, you screwed up those tags there big time. And some of the pictures are missing - but here is what it should be like, for the pictures that are there... (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

And I must say, that's a very fine ship you have there!

Yeah, I know the tags were bad.
I didn't place the http in front of the urls, and when I edited it, it spat some html coding, showing a href links as well as UBB at me.
And I misspelled the titles, they were destroyer.jpg, not destoy.jpg. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)
-
Don't worry dude! Those are both really nice ships (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
-
The destroyer is well designed to maximise forepower in one arc. This does leave it a bit vulnerable to fighter / bomber attack however.
Looks good but needs an escort ship if it's going to live long.

Of course it needs other support.
It doesn't carry it's own fighters.
If a destroyer could do it all then it'd be pointless to have cruisers.
But the turrets pointing in the upper and lower arcs are aaaf's to help out in that arena.

You mean a dropship (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
Carriers are large, destroyer-sized things. Dropships are mini-carriers between cruiser and corvette size.
Now, why everyone else seems to think of a dropship as a type of special transport, even though normal transports in the FS universe can drop onto planets too, is beyond me.
Dropships IMO are used to DROP into an area quickly, DROP their fighters and bombers, help with the havoc, recollect them and then scram.
So that ship would be a dropship (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
-
oh yeah and nice job on both of them (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
-
Very nice work, you've given a lot of thought to the ships and I like the fact that you haven't tried to make another one of those super destroyer-esque ships. Lots of potential here (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Nope, it's what I consider a carrier.
Think of this as more like a vtol carrier from today. Carriers that only support choppers and harriers.
The strike carrier is going to drop off, retreat at a good speed, and be able to stay in the area.
I have yet to start on a dropship. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
Which will jump in, drop, jump out, then wait for the recall order to go back in to get everyone who's left.

I dunno. I think smallish carriers should all be lumped into the "dropship" category. Dropships would basically be any cruiser to corvette-sized ships with a fighterbay. This means the Moloch would be redesignated under my system btw.
Besides, the GTSC designation is already taken (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Snrrrrr...

True, the GTSC has already been taken, but who said anything about the GTVA owning the ships? (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
Though I do see the point.
We could make it a Sc designnation, like the corvettes are Cv.
CV meaning Carrier Vehicle.
CVN Inclines that it's nuclear.
But then the whole naming scheme here is ruined anyhow.

I like ships with weaknesses. Opens up lots of mission opportunities (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

It would be tough to differentiate between GTSC and GTSc... same with GTCV and GTCv. Just use GTDs! It's just about interchangable with "strike carrier" anyways. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
i also thought up the Gunship class (GTGs) which is like a freighter-sized mini-cruiser designed to attack in hordes. This designation would also encompass Q-ships (converted freighters). (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Who says you can only use 2 letters for the ship?
And it looks more like a Vasudan design: PV-, GV- or something of the sort.
-
Well, I wasn't going for attractiveness.
I was going for simplicity of design.
Take the orignal army jeep.
Blocky, ugly, and as reliable as your rifle.
And it was the simpleness of utility that kept it in service for how long?

Dropships.... drop. The very term implies something that is capable of surface to space travel under it's own power. How do you apply the term dropship to an escort carrier?

form me, a dropship is the class of ship that carrieds soldiers or ground vehicle on the surface of a planet (aka Aliens or starship Troopers )
-
I usually think of those ones in Mechwarrior.

Reworked the tower for skinning's sake.
Added 3 generic turrets to at least have something covering every direction.
