This has been my hobby after rendering (which I stopped 7 months ago - I've been taking photos for roughly the same amount of time). The photos you see here are a few macro shots of flora at a nearby botanical garden. Any comments? ;)
-
pretty.. you didn't edit them at all?
-
Aww, flowers. You shouldn't have. (http://www.uniquehardware.co.uk/server-smilies/cwm/3dlil/hearton.gif)
-
Edited them for brightness and contrast, and bumped up the saturation in a couple of places. That's it, I think. (The P31 produces very colour-rich photos, though its CCD doesn't produce quite as much line definition as you would expect from a good 2MP model.) I resized them down from 1600*1200 to their present form because of file size.

 First this makes me laugh, and then it makes me nervous. :nervous:

That one flower looks like it has a light bulb in it. Ah well, nice :)

Flash + really foggy night + closed-up daisy = flower with a light bulb in it
-
Pretty cool. I definitely like the "glowing" one best, but the cactus closeup's pretty nice.
-
Not the cactus again!
I like the last one better.
-
nice but wtf is a macro shot ?

Big.

Jargon for close-up. :)

Those are excellent, Steak. Shame you weren't using a good film SLR, though. The cactus is certainly the best, followed by the anthers.
I do flowers too, but only with the film camera. I never could get quite the depth of color, nor sharpness that I wanted from digital.
PM me the name of the botanical gardens so I can go there on my next trip. :D Oz is the only place I've been that had decent flora that I haven't photographed yet.
-
Hey, thanks man. :) Yeah, I chose digital mainly because I don't have the finances nor the facilities for developing. I must say, though, that sharpness is the one thing that suffers on my digicam - though I hope to amend that when I get my next model, which won't be quite as cheap. ;)
Oh, and Mik, that PM is on its way.

Verry nice! the lightbulb-flower-thingy is one of the greatest technical effects shots i've seen (it was wasn't done with photoshop). I've been meaning to post some of my photography for a while, you don't see any on HLP. I love macro photography before I got my macro lense I used to tape a magnifying lense to my 28-80mm which worked suprisingly well.
there really isn't ant reason to use film I'm a professional photographer and I've used digital for a couple years, with the quality of digital cameras today their much more practical and cost effective than film.
maybe I'll put up some of my stuff later.

I would agree, but for one thing: I haven't seen a digital camera yet that produces an acceptable level of sharpness, nor the complete color range presented by old style film cameras. It gets better as the price goes up, but it never quite gets there.

Thanks dude, I'm glad you like it! :) Nope, no effects, that's the photo almost entirely as it came out of the camera (resized down, brightness shoved down a little, as it happens). Yeah, I'd love to see some of your shots! By coincidence, Stryke and me posted some shots around the same time... maybe we can start a new trend around here. :D
I've been found out!! That's exactly what I'm doing right now! I use three 2x magnifying lens and stack them up in front of the shutter. It works like a dream, drops the minimal focal distance right down, and magnifies everything with pin-prick accuracy. Not bad for plastic lenses which cost me a few dollars at the local National Geographic shop, too...
-
Those own. :eek2:
Too bad you don't render anymore...
Though photographs aren't worse. :p
-
You sir, have some serious talent there! The bulby, and the cactus, and stuff. Man, I don't care if it's not a Deimos, but a stupid flower, but it definately looks COOL!!!
maybe I should add you to the Bobbau+Styxx union?
-
actually those are like made by a pro... (then again they are :D hehe)
really sharp photos and the objects are aligned properly too. Very well balanced.
I'd propably have tried editing the levels too though... might have prought even more details... I guess
-
that looks eery
-
Hmm... Flowers. :D
Great work there, dude. I'm thinking of getting a macro lens myself, but I'd rather get a telescopic one first.
-
not bad but they need a few beam cannons :D
-
Glad y'all like it. :) Flowers are one of my favourite subjects, because they're so amazingly detailed - think of the polys, the procedurals! :D I guess it's my rendering away from rendering.

I'm not sure whether to be honoured, or run.

SJ Cactus, maybe? :D
(http://www.3dap.com/hlp/staff/setekh/sj_cactus.jpg)
-
And you worry about the sickness in my mind, Steak? You need deep deep help. ;)
-
...
Does that mean you don't like the cactus?
:D
-
There need to be more plants like that. Then, MAYBE, I might actually be more interested in gardening than, say, watching paint peel.
Or like the ones in Minority Report the movie (book didn't have them, did it?)
-
Hey, that's it! I'll manifest myself in miscellaneous plants for the render battle... hahah, that's so ridiculous.
-
Ok, that cactus ownz everything.
Never knew the Shivans were THIS powerfull :nervous:.
-
It's times like this I wish I could change Setekhs vetname and get away with it ;)
But dude those photos are incredible! you have a way of using soft light in both photos and renders that just leaves me in awe every time
-
Thanks. :) I might go find an online photography community and present some of my work to them, see what they think. ;)

IIRC they were tall stick like plants with jaws on top that ate people .... maybe im wrong :D
-
Oooh I like the glowly one. A lot. And that Cactus is certainly evolved! (The one with beams I mean)

The problem I'm having is actually finding an online photographers' community. :o The best I can find is at Renderosity, but that's not quite what I'm looking for. If anyone else can find one, I'd be grateful... ;)

Yeah, I know what you mean. I was part of one here in Brazil, but it closed 'cause the "owner" thought there was too much spam and too little talk of photography.
:(
-
That's no good. :( The bad news for me, is that... if there isn't a digital photography community online, is there going to be one anywhere? The web is the medium for digital photography, so I'm having serious doubts as to whether will even be a bunch of these guys in RL. :o
-
You could always try to start one. ;)
-
...
You know, that's not such a bad idea.

:yes: to starting one. for an online art comunity including photographraphy try Something Leet (www.somethingleet.com) thats where I go. they're pretty big and therfore lack the "where everybody knows your name." feeling but take a look they have some pretty incredible artists in all mediums. Well except for oil painting.

Not sure what GameSpy would think about that, though. :)
Thanks for the link, ND, I'll check it out now.

I don't think it would be a big problem, being it part of HLP. After all, we all know they love us.

Um... Day of the Triffids is a book. The Triffids are slow, man-eating plants. They're pretty harmless, because you can see them coming and kill 'em. Until a 'green meteor shower' at the start of the book (which I think is suppossed to be an accidental explosion of a bio-weapon sattelite), which blinds the population of the UK (and maybe other countries...). The book follows a few of the survivors, including a bloke who was in hospital for an eye operation and kept his sight, and generally is a post-apocalyptic sort of thing. I only read it about 10 years ago, though.

What, with us hogging all their space and bandwidth? Naturally... :D

Okay, I got comments from the SomethingLeet forums. Here's my thread: http://www.somethingleet.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15784
And here are the comments (there aren't many, yet):
The shots are all quite vivid. But there is no real intriquing focal point while the flowers to draw intrest. They look well ordinary no real drama or emotion to the photo. I would recommened try looking at the subjects under diffrent lighting conditions (i.e. a storm) and diffrent perspectives and angles bring some orginallity to the subject. There are some very nice composed photos in particular the cactus. Though in that shot the frame is too filled with the subject. Overall the composition needs some work. Stay with photography and keep shooting and you can only get better.
wow, very vivid, great colors
photo_illuminate.jpg is beautiful, i really like that one, and usualy i am not a fan of flower shots
photo_illuminate.jpg is my favorite of the bunch.
you took those with a p31? did you touch them up at all?
Awesome photos, i like em :)
:D
Anyway, it's great, I love getting feedback... I really need to refine my technique. ;)
