Title: TOP 10 of 2002
Post by: Ulundel on January 08, 2003, 01:29:38 pm
Here's the deal. I'm writing an article about the best games of 2002 and I could use some other opinions too. Besides me, Gamespot and PC Gamer that is. :)

Go.

It got RPG of the year from Gamespy, Avault (might be wrong here) and TeleFragged

HEGEMONIA! HEGEMONIA!- 8357 G4|\/|3 3\/3R!!!!!!

America's Army: Operations

I didn't like BF1942 too much, so I'm not going to nominate it. It's load times are too long, the people that play it online aren't very fun, and the bot AI sux0rs.

OK, the first five...any comments?

1. No One Lives Forever 2
2. Warcraft 3
3. Neverwinter Nights
4. GTA 3
5. Medieval: Total war

I probably cannot give any good opinions since I only bought one new game last year (UT2003), but that one was certainly very good.

I suggest to replace Warcraft 3 with either Mafia or... UT2003

How the heck do you kill things without the mouse? I mean, the enemys can jump, they could be up a walkway or something.

Same for every year. If you wanted a list of ten genuinely good games, I can guarantee that the list would span at least three years. Except for 1995, which for some reason had an ungodly number of cool games.

I think WC3 was massively overrated. I'd have said GTA3 (despite the lazy port). BF1942 for definite, also Mafia and wasn't Medal of Honour: Allied Assault released this year? That game was pretty ****ing awesome.

If your not just talking PC games however, Halo. God damn I've been playing games since the ****ing Vectrex and NOTHING has ever held my attention or demanded my respect of the programmers quite like this game.

I would've said something like mafia that I want.. but WC3 and BF are the only games from last year that I have opened and played.

That's what it was! I was thinking that I bought one other game last year but could not remember what; it was this one. Another very good one. I play online with this quite often too.

...So you managed to download the demo? I was afraid it wouldn't work... I tried to download it (just to check the server) and it kept freezing after 0.9mbs.

Actually, I had the same problem too; after trying it two or three times I gave up on that link. A couple of Google searches revealed nothing useful either. I eventually ended up downloading the full version from HOTU, as that was the only link that worked correctly. It took a full night, since their servers are extremely slow and the file was a good 243mb, but it was well worth it. If I continue to like the game I will probably buy it since it must be pretty cheap by now, but I cannot recall seeing it anywhere.

The story is a little confusing though; I thought everyone on the Von Braun is supposed to be dead for whatever reason, but then why is this Polito giving you orders? And who are those hybrid guys? (they are pretty funny though; walking around like zombies and mumbling some nonsense about ending harmony and whatnot, until they get smashed by a guy with a wrench :D)

The game has a lot in common with Deus Ex by the way (which is a very, very good thing in my book :D); are the two made by the same people or something? Some things are better executed in SS2 and other things are superior in DX, but overall the gameplay systems are quite similar. Also, one thing I really like about this game is the limited quantities of ammo, since here's what happens to me in most FPS games: there is so much ammo that I end up using only weapons for which there is extra ammo lying around and I cannot carry due to already having a full load, and whenever I find some really good weapon, I keep saving it for later, intending to use it on some harder guy, only to finish the game with a full load. :p

Does that version have cutscenes? Don't continue without cutscenes!

Oh, and do buy the game if you like it. One of the companies who created it is still alive, and a Shock 3 is still possible.

Well, Warren Spector (producer of Deus Ex) did work on Shock 1, but not on Shock 2. And just for the record, Shock 2 was released before Deus Ex. :)

Deus Ex definitely has better graphics, while I'd say Shock 2 sounds are superior (the way sound propagates is just awesome). Can't say much more, still have got to play through Deus Ex.

Neverwinter Nights is the only game I play that came out this year,  but it is quite good. Nice multiplayer, the editor allows people to make new campaigns, main campaign sucked a bit though.

Ahh, there it is:

That word, "own", I think? The Hebrew letters it uses mean "The Name", which is translated into "The Lord" in most Bibles.

And Setekh, since God is Love, you aren't imagining things. :D

As an aside, I told Setekh when he first showed me that render that I find it nearly impossible to read that text - the Hebrew letters confuse me too much. :p

The capital "A"s are a messed up backwards Hebrew "P" sound... and the "S" is a backwards "L"
