Title: OggVorbis support
Post by: nimroy on January 08, 2003, 02:08:32 pm
Hi, I was just wondering if OggVorbis will be supported anytime soon? Its GPL and better than mp3, used in UT2003 and other games...

[color=66ff00]Hi nimroy :)

I think ogg vorbis currently only has an audio toolset and as far as I'm aware everyone is fairly happy with freespace's audio codecs.

Isn't ogg vorbis working on a movie codec? Now that might just fix our little DivX hangup. :nod:

*Remind self to catch up on encoders and the like*

I got crackling sound with my SoundBlaster128 in freespace2 only in that game i get that. others are fine, i hate to play with sound that crackles the whole time it isn't fun to play. So any other sound codec is fin as long it doesn't do weird:)

Ogg seems cool enough....UT2003's music is very good quality for a very small filesize.  Infact, it seems that the filesizes are only slightly bigger than the original UT's music and the original used a variation on the MOD music format as far as I know (which uses samples for notes like MIDI).

Been living under a rock (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=ogg), Analazon?

Maeglamor, you think people are "happy" with distributing their custom voice and music as multi-dozen-megabyte files? :rolleyes:

:lol: Well, better than goats. Anyway, I was thinking, can't we use the same method that was used in implimenting the videos for implimenting sound? a la the sound is decoded by the windows media layer?

Ogg Vorbis rocks. Open source, better quality, lower file size. I don't know what else you could possibly want. :D
