Title: Deimos question
Post by: Mishakuz on January 10, 2003, 10:29:04 pm
Please Help

I'm thinking about doing a mission where a ship has to go  though the big hole in an Arcadia. I was wondering if the Deimos Corvette could go through the hole.

thanx

(I also posted this in the General Freespace forum, if that's a problem then remove this FRED)

Er... not unless it was gonna make the hole a lot wider by ramming it a couple times. Deimoses are big.

You can probably fit any of the cruisers (except the Mentu) through the hole, but I think that's about it.

Ironically... I just tried doing something similiar with a triton and cargo... too small, so I doubt anything bigger such as a cruiser will fit, much less a Deimos.

Oh, and a good way of finding out is .. trying it...

Hey, there's this key on my keyboard with a picture of a semicolon on it. Does anyone know if I can press it to get a semicolon? I was thinking about writing something that might use one.

What if I want to use the colon instead?  Do I need a new keyboard?

*wishes not to offend the newb... if he is offended, I apologize *

No, this one seems to have a sense of humour. That said, a few suitably caustic lines from ZB is usually enough to reduce strong men to tears :)

The humor is strong with this one...

( if you know the etymology of humor, that's a really cool pun  )

Yeah... mention the word "ballistic" anywhere near him, and he goes -- erm, ballistic.

Spoiler:
EDIT: replaced berserk with ballistic to make it funnier

If you want a bigger hole, fire a couple of trans-phasic torpedoes at the edges of the hole of the Arcadia space installation. It might help.:p

Or you could "ram it until it gives up".

Having had a check in FRED.... no, corvetes will not fit through, though any cruiser, including a Mentu, will.

Freespace dictionary-
Cruiser: A warship small enought to fit throught the hole in an GTI arcadia.

If anyone can explain dg's Google-phobia to me, I'd be most appreciative. Maybe he hates it when people actually support their own arguments?

No, what I really can't stand is a cliche, which is what you and Google have become

did you know, you can't use a semicolon in your messages in FRED - it messes everything up because the parser thinks you're starting a comment

and the percent sign does some weird stuff too

Oh, I'm sure everyone would LOVE to hear you explain how a search engine can be a cliche.

No, look... pay attention please:

1. Newbie posts daft question.

2. Nine times out of ten, ZB posts a link to a Google search page

3. I groan at the cliche

See? It's your going posting a Google link to support evey other argument that gets me. It's so... predictable, you know? A little more variety is what I ask of you. Which is why I remarked that you hadn't Googled the poor chap in this thread - quite a refreshing change :)

Can I have a handful of your popcorn, please?

Wow. I... I'm almost speechless. The sheer vacuousness of this remark is breathtaking in the extreme. I must take a moment to absorb this revelation about your personality.

...

...

(almost there)

...

Ok. It appears you're suffering some sort of sociopathic disconnect here, so I'll attempt to explain using very simple words. The reason I post links is to inform. It is not to entertain. It is a utilitarian act, like ending sentences with a period. Does it bother you that (almost) every sentence ends with a period? Do you spend your days attempting to come up with novel ways to accomplish tasks like breathing and eating?

Yeesh. :doubt:

Oh, suit yourself. You're right about not entertaining, but I had assumed you do it only to annoy. Let's face it - have you actually made any friends here by the virtue of the constant, unfiltered sarcasm and linkage? How about the VBB? Dude, I used to have the greatest of respect for you at the VBB thanks to your seemingly infinite knowledge of FRED, but now I realise that sarcasm is all you do. Ever. To quote Aldo, it's getting on my tits.

I know this game. I played it with my brother when we were kids. The aim is to annoy the other guy until he gets cross, and in some strange way that's a victory. Well, you've scored a point, Zylon - you've annoyed me mightily.

I have a question - in real life, do you have friends who put up with your incessant piss-takage? Or do you only do that online, where you don't run the risk of being punched in the face for being a little tit?

--------------------------------
Disclaimers:

1. Sorry to Mishakuz for getting his thread closed
2. A dollar says ZB will now ask what I mean by piss-takage

ZB, you were actually better at this at the VBB. however, you still have a point.

DG: don't even go there. It doesn't work. It never has.

Stryke: no, you were just in time.

so, how do I free beams in fs2?

Yet another personality revelation-- DG finds substantiated claims annoying.

Beats me. I don't ask. I do vaguely recall Plasma posting approving remarks after some of my more sarcastic remarks on the VBB.

Uhm, so now you "realize" that I didn't actually have all that FRED knowledge?? And a quick forum search can inarguably prove that sarcasm is not all I do.

Quote

Except that I almost never direct my sarcastic remarks at you. You've taken it upon yourself to be annoyed by me. I recommed a more productive hobby.

My friends in real life are, on average, a lot more clueful than the people I mess with here, so it hasn't come up.

So what have we learned from this latest exchange? That DG is annoyed by hyperlinks and third-party facts, and has highly selective perception when it comes to people who annoy him.

So, like, are you done now?

Back on topic, I don't know if any capship will fly through the Arcadia.  I had a similar problem with my knossos, ships wouldn't pass through it but instrad rammed an invisible wall when they entered.  I couldn't figure out why though.

Post by: Sesquipedalian on January 13, 2003, 02:53:58 am
That's because there is an invisible wall.  But there should be a "dont collide invisible" flag in the Knossos' table entry.  You must have removed it.

Knossos? You must either be more tired than Mishakuz with his FRED/thread mix-up, or "on" something.... and for some reason I doubt it's the latter. ;)

Now, on to the fun stuff.... ;7 *breaks out into song*

Zylon and Diamond, sittin' in a tree... :D

You're right that it worked fine.  My problem was with the Archangel and DTP's build of the source, it didn't let the supercap pass through the knossos or my custom knossos, despite the fact that both were big enough to accomodate the ship.

Arg - that might be my fault.  Does "dont-collide-invisible" work with other ships?

No, open it up in ModelView.  There is a big invisible box surrounding the whole thing.
...Seriously! :nervous:;)

Ahh, I missed StratComm's referral to the Knossos in his post completely - I thought he was still referring to the Arcadia.

And on a side note, the Ganymede has that big invisible box as well.

I think if you remove the box, and sides, it could work, although I've only put a ship in a Ganymede in 3dsm

To return to the topic, this was my fault.  When I added the don't-collide-invisible sexp, I changed some collision flags, and I goofed and didn't change some of them properly.  Next build, it should work correctly.  Sorry about that. :o
