I have a $40 best buy gift card, and some other extra cash...and I want a new game. I can't decide which one, so that since most of them have been out for a while, I thought I could ask the opinions of those who played them.
-
Oh, and I do want the game to be moddable. Not being able to mod a game drives me crazy...
-
UT2003
-
UT2003, purely because I'm not the NWN type. You need to think about what you enjoy. All the games you listed are really very good but if you prefer RPGs over FPSs then obviously UT2003 is right out of the window, visa versa as well.
However, UT2003 is great fun, the engine is spectacular and feels a lot smoother than UT did (in my opinion). It's sped up mind you so if you prefered UTs slower pace over Q3s then it might not be to your taste...lots of long livety though, especially if you take it online.
Edit: As for mods, well UT2003 ships with a map editor and theres a lot of things you can do with the engine, a lot of mods are already in development and once again there are smaller mutators and so on that can be created. You won't get bored.
-
Out of those I would definitely go for UT2003, but I'm a die-hard Unreal fanatic. :p :D As for moddability, the Unreal games have always led the way there, and as Thunder said, this latest one is no exception.
-
UT2003 or Neverwinter Nights. Both are A1-SUPAR.
-
I don't think I'm gonna go with NWN...I can do RPGing anytime I want, and a comp just can't compare to a real person as a DM/GM.
-
I'm surprised that more people aren't going for WC3...
-
UT2k3
Perhaps the best would be to wait a bit.
Unreal 2 is supposed to be finished this month and C&C:Generals are on track for Feb 11.
-
Just get the Totally Unreal pack, play the old UT and kick some ass with the sniper gun.

*thwacks self*
generals...thats what I forgot about...
-
Save for generals or buy UT
That or if you want a RTS, then WCIII. Dunno anything about modding RTS though.
-
I'd suggest a game that's not on the list, but people would start to get annoyed. :p

you will suggest a game that is not on the list...

Buy Age of Mythology.

He's gonna suggest SS2...
-
Hey, how about System Shock 2?
-
UT2003! No doubt about it.
However, I still prefer the first one. The new sniper rifle is not to my liking at all, nor it the new rocket launcher.
The ragdoll physics rule, though.
-
Definitely System Shock 2.
-
I'm going to be different and say Diablo. Mainly because as a general rule, you'll need to buy a new computer to play the other three if you don't meet the mins (and even if you do in some cases).
Personally, I'd look for some old classics. Most new games are flashy, but don't have much else backing them up.
-
Er... SS2's cool, but make sure your hardware's compatible first. I got that color-inversion **** going on with the textures, where everything looks like a pixelated acid trip. It really sucks, and makes the game unplayable to boot.
-
That can probably be fixed by patching, and then open your user.cfg file in Notepad and add the line:
safe_texture_manager
-
I'm failry sure it is patched (HOTU download, they're pretty good about these things), but it's worth a shot. Where's the patch?

I picked Unreal because it understand Lightwave. :D
-
I'm inclined to say Unreal out of the list, too, by the way, even though I've only played about ten minutes of it. Any game with a mod that lets you ride a missile is all right in my book.:D

You can download it from Irrational Games (http://www.irrationalgames.com/shock2/).

No dice. The installer can't find my copy of the game.
-
Americas Army, greatest FPS/sim and it's free.
-
...
...
Should I say it? 'Cause I want to, but it's getting a bit old, and it's about a page of more or less ranting.:D

Do it! Give in to your hate! Unleash your anger!
or something. :D

What version are you running? You should be able to get this information somewhere, just look for it.
-
Actually, on close inspection, it has a readme for a patch describing roughly what the patch you provided the link for does, so I assume the rest of it is already in there, too.
And ZB: Do you mean user.bnd or something else.cfg? There's no user.cfg anywhere, and I don't think the key bindings are the problem.

The version of SS2 from HOTU is the patched version. I remember reading it when I D/L it the other day. Pretty cool game but I don't know if I have the inclination to play it too much. Scared me a couple of times already though and it's got a great atmosphere.

It's user.cfg. You have to create the file under the main Shock 2 folder with some text editor and put that single line ZylonBane mentioned in it.
-
Just outta curiosity, what graphics card are you using?
-
Matrox Millennium on the 98 box. My first guess was that that was the trouble, but I'm trying everything else, just to be sure.
-
Get Warcraft 3.
Load any mission, click rapidly on different units (footmen and riflemen in particular). Listen to the funny voices.
-
For that, you can just get WCII for about $2 in any bargain bin.

I was browsing the Unreal 2 BB (http://ina-community.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?forumid=182) and noticed this post (http://ina-community.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=250895):
