Ok, I had to vacate my seat in front of the computer to go do some work outside. During this time, I began to think, and had the bizzare idea for a new hosted project thingy. As you know, HLP has an incredible talent base in just about everything related to computer gaming. Modeling, Story, 2d art, etc... We also have a large amount of people who can code in C++, or would like to code in C++. Now, knowing that I wish to join the gaming industry when my time for a carrer comes about, I would like to get a bit more experience in the actual designing/coding of games. What I propose is that a new hosted project could be created dedicated to the creation of games and/or helping people who would like to learn about the technicalities of making/designing games to learn. As I said before, we have a large talent base for just this sort of thing. I do know a little here and there about game design/coding, but would like to learn more. I'm sure that there are several others out there who are the same way. This could be an opportunity for projects like Radiojv's space simulator to really take flight (no pun intended...).
So, as with all hosted projects here at HLP, first thing that is needed is people. So, here is an opportunity for HLP to create its own games, and for you to help. I won't go into technicalities right now, I just want to get an overall "feel" for what people think of this, so thoughts, questions, opinions?

i'll help in the next few weeks/months! i'm pretty busy at the moment, but sure! count me in!
it's not really Freespace related, so don't be suprised if HLP doesn't host you in the end, but if they don't, then i'll host it for yoU :)

Hmm, that's intriguing. :)
I think a major issue here is getting people with the time. Most of the people who have the skills for this project are already committed in other areas - and heavily so. But in terms of the concept, I love it; I'm actually thinking of the same thing, going into games, but Australia's not exactly teeming with possibilities. :D
That said, keep on the idea. We just need some manpower behind, that's all.

It's a nice idea, but unfortunately it's not really all that feasible. As Steak said, most people with the talent don't have the time, and this kind of things requires lots of time - and discipline. That last one might pose a problem to everyone. If you want to start it, though, once it's visibly alive and moving we can host it here, I think.

There's a big problem with trying to combine people from all over the world in an undertaking that is best done at one physical location, that is, creating a game. Quite a shame, of course - baasically rules out any possible future I might have in that area, but that's life.

we do have one fine example of people all over the world working together, and that's the source code project

The obvious option would be to move then, no? ;)

The SCP is a hobby, not a job. Furthermore, they are working off an established game engine, not trying to make their own, thus there's a decreased level of complexity.

If it was that important to me, then of course. But at the moment I prefer living in Israel far above any possible job outside the country, thank you very much. :p

Ok, just a random idea (I seem to have a lot of these...) to test this concept. What if we designed either
- a Freespace Sidescroller
- a freespace RTS
Would any here be interested in
- Coding
- Level creating
- Image editing
- Story
- Sound
both of which would be 2d, and I would be kind of the "lead programmer" on it...but it will take a bit more learning on my part (sound/networking)
so..?

hmm...that seems to indicate some interest :D
It could either be space ships, or a marine-type thing ala Duke Nukem 2, higher res of course...
-
Go with space ships.
-
k...
Anyone wanna help code this?
And also this would need 1 or 2 ships and some background/map tiles...
-
I would help but I'm incredibly lazy and have other **** to do.
Anyway, you could blatantly rip-off an old game whose name shall not be mentioned for future legal reasons and call it F-Type.
-
why not Project - F? :D

For BG stuff you could have, besides the obvious stars and nebulae, a very long flyby of a Sathanas. :D
