Title: Damn this is bad for my heart (system shock 2)
Post by: Kamikaze on January 13, 2003, 03:09:01 am
I got System Shock 2 and damn it's pretty scary.. I was playing it alone with pretty low light and a zombie thingy (it told me it was a "hybrid" whatever that is) assaults me with a pipe or something, I fought back with a wrench... (note that the atmosphere of the game and music contribute, along with odd, sudden wailings)

I think I like this game already :D

"Hybrid" (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=hybrid) -- Something of mixed origin or composition.

You'll find out what they're mixed with later... :drevil:

I was playing this all night as well. Somehow I find it more funny than scary though, since the hybrids really act strangely at times and are sometimes paying more attention to their incessant mumbling instead of attacking you. :D ("we are, we are, we are... aaahh!" :D) I have been using the wrench on just about everything so far; it has to be the best overall weapon in the game. Also, regarding the protocol droids, the manual says that they are supposed to be "unarmed and always helpful," but why do they run into you and explode in the game? :p

Spoiler:
There was this one really confusing part later on though. When you step into the Engineering B area, the view suddenly shifts and there are these two guys in a cave talking about some weird thing. It is difficult to make out what they are saying though.

Here's a copy of a Newbie's Guide to SS2 I threw together once. Spoiler-free.

1. The wrench is your friend. If it's at all possible to kill something with the wrench, do it. Health is cheap and plentiful, ammo is not.

2. Turn on the mini-map (checkbox at the bottom-right of the level map).

3. Med beds don't work until you use a surgical bed activation key on them. Use them wisely.

4. Moving between bulkheads overwrites your last quicksave.

5. If you have more than two mouse buttons, bind the Use/Move mode toggle to one of them. You'll be using it a lot.

6. Press "U" to listen to any unread logs you've picked up.

7. Press "N" to drop nav markers anyplace you want to find again later. These show up in first-person view and on the map (where you can annotate them by clicking on them).

8. Search everywhere and everything. Every body, robot chunk, desk, turret, locker... every nook and cranny.

9. Don't worry about the high Replicator prices. You can find almost everything you need elsewhere.

10. Unload every weapon you find. Ammo is precious.

11. Pick a single big empty room to drop all your extra stuff.

12. You can stop any security alert by accessing (not hacking) any security terminal.

13. The gas cloud when you destroy an egg is harmless.

14. Read the descriptions of all the items (Ctrl-click). They're mostly funny, and occasionally helpful.

15. SS2 is based on the same engine as Thief. This means you can climb ledges and hide in shadows.

Indeed

10. Unload every weapon you find. Ammo is precious.

Especialy the hybrids' shotguns.

14. Read the descriptions of all the items (Ctrl-click). They're mostly funny, and occasionally helpful.

Cannot agree more, the mug, or the champagne for example.

By the way, why is every single hybrid shotgun broken? How are they able to use it if it does not work? :wtf:

I think this is the single most important tactic, at least in my experience so far. Hybrids, monkeys and maintenance robots can almost always be killed with a wrench without getting hurt at all, so I usually save the ammo for the turrets and other enemies.

And ever when you take the gun off them, look at their corpse on the floor, and it's still in their hand!

Bah. The PSI Amp is for camera killin. The gun is for turret killing, and the wrench is for everything else.

Of course, the wrench is used for turret smashing until its about to explode THEN the gun comes into play.
