That's what I thought.

When I saw yours, I opened up PS to make a new map(s) for myself and chose a res of 10800x5400. The .bmp was 150Mbs :D (now deleted for Great Justice)

Mine are 8000x4000 and the JPGs are roughly 2x as large.

Here's my meager attempt.

To be added/fixed:
*Clouds bumpmap
*Dark side city-scape (I hope)

Hope you don't mind :o

I could have done a crapyer attempt with procederals, but it sucks to much. Thats why lunarcell;)

Fractal procdurals can actually yield really cool planets, depending on your prog. Lightwave or Carrara have good 'uns, I think MAX is still a bit weak on the procedual end.

Problem with Lunarcell is, it always looks like Lunarcell. People will always be able to tell it's Lunarcelled if they know what Lunarcell is, and at any rate it's kinda limited. But this is a pretty good job- the colors work well.

I think Lunarcell generated maps work better in a 3d prog, then in PS. I rendered my pic in MAX and , I assume, Darkage did his in Lightwave.
Doesn't look too bad, though.

Naw, Lunarcell never looks bad (and both of you did fair jobs with it), but Lunarcell planets never really look like Earthlike planets, like any planet ever seen, in fact. They look like Lunarcell planets. I think it's partially the fact that neither land nor sea is generally broad enough, and partially that all coasts look really fiddly.

It's a nice plugin, but it indeed doesn't always look realy earth like. But i think this is the best i can make for now. Still it looks prety good for a LC generated map and cloud map. I actualy made this planet for my own universe i am making atm. Now i am gonna try to learn how to model ships .I got the InsideLightwave7 book that covers all the stuff in lightwave so i should proberly be able to make my first ships in a few months. Eventualy i want to create a small trailer or movie for it. But thats still some time away. By that time i am also able to make better planet maps without using LC like plugins.

want to do something like that?

(http://www.3dap.com/hlp/hosted/ott/renders/pursuittb.jpg) (http://www.3dap.com/hlp/hosted/ott/renders/pursuitpreview.zip)

free p1mp ;7

( and trying how to use a pic as a link while I'm at it :p )
( yaih! it works :D )

completly silly trailer ( didn't get to decide what would happen :ick ), but still it features my own ship designs :D

That was cool.

How long to make that?
What tools where used?

how long? hmm... first version was done in 4 days ( 9->12, 13.30->17.30, that's... 24 hours ), plus a few later modifications at home. Was done in max.

both. there was sound in the first version, too ( well, sound... there was a music, can hardly call that "sound" )

It's fantastic, Darkage. I'd add some reflectivity to the ocean, maybe place an additional sun (why not make it a binary? :D) in that scene for it to reflect off; then adjust the shading of the planet (especially its clouds) to account for that marvellously orange star. ;)

I'll try that Setekh;) thanks for your comment:)

the only thing lunarcell needs to look more realistic is giving it a "tectonic banding" routine - where the mountains and ilsand chains are setup realistically around tectonic boundries - which would aslo affect active/passive continental boundries, etc
Title: My own planet!
Post by: Stryke 9 on January 16, 2003, 09:34:32 pm
Ayuh.

What it really needs is some kinda grouping mechanism option, where you can sorta "paint on" the continents to a general degree, while it does all the little fiddly bits like oceans, islands, and terrain shape.

In other words, less of a fractal generator and more of a terrain generator, I guess.

Me, though, I'm sticking to stacked procedurals. Not only does it look cool to see what 20 procedural functions nested in each other look like in the texture modifier, the results are controllable and quite good.:D

i could never use any of that stuff, lunarcell, glitteraco, etc.

when i do stars in glitteratio, then want to make a planet on top of the stars (using lunarcell), when i click 'OK' in lunarcell, it puts the planet on top of the stars :( even the 'black background' is on top of the stars :(

In Lunarcell you'll have to "output" the planet as composite. ;)

Look for a planet icon, hold Left MB for a selection list.
