beh,
I WILL NOT FEAR YOUR PUNY 1 GB SDRAM, FOR I HAVE 512 MEGS OF FAST DDRAM AND A GEFORCE4 TI4200.
beats your ATI any time. You beat me with the DVD drive, TV Capture card and HDD space though.
sucka

Alright, alright ;)
Within the month:
AMD Athlon 2600+ XP
Chaintech Zenith 7NJS (onboard audio, firewire, USB 2.0, LAN)
Aerocooler "Phantom" (CPU fan, but it's nice so I'll mention it ;))
512MB PC2100 DDR RAM
40GB Hard Drive
GeForce4 4600 Ti
Videologic Sonicfury
Panasonic DVD
LiteON CDRW
and I'm modding the case, adding at least another three 80mm fans as well as interior lighting and a window.
I need to name it though... anything with this much money spent on it needs a name...
-
the Inferno?
The Juggernaut?
The PC That Is Better Than A Colossus?
Thunder's comp?

I will upgrade my HSF (SLK 800 with an Enermax Fan) and GFX board next. I will probably upgrade my CPU, as well.

Unreal 2 went gold today!

damn!!!! i really pity myself with this system now: :(
windows 98SE
800mhz PIII
192mb SD-ram
riva TNT2-16mb
20GB+40GB HD
dvdplayer
cdwriter
and a monitor wich goes weird every week.
-
Kazan's daddy must have gotten a nice Christmas bonus this year.
-
AMD 1.3GHz
256MB DDR
NVIDIA Riva TNT 2 32MB
Win XP
30GB + 8GB HD
The worlds ****iest CD Drive, a 4 speed from 1995 - w00tness!
Some small, but otherwise adequate speakers, with a good CD player nearby for a bit more noise in games and MP3s.
MS Sidewinder Force-feed
Very nice 17" flatscreen - i managed to blag this cause i said it was the only of the 3 monitors that would fit on my desk.
Basically, its an upgrade of an old 400Mhz computer, virtually everything replaced. So its up in my room now, networked to the other 2 which have a CDRW and DVD each, 80GB of HD's between them, plus printer and scanner and ISDN internet sharing, its a nice set up.
There's a faster system, a 2GHz, but this current one is nice and stable, which i like, havent had any compatibility problems with any games, an improvement on the other 2.
-
Mmm...like the new systems. Kazan, I'm sure for a little more money you could do yourself one better and get a Radeon 9500Pro. The 7500 is a good card, but if your still doing gaming, it isn't superb.
The rest is ultra cool. Epsecially the RAID config. Looks good.

oh, and, about Kaz' PC... you didn't say about the monitor, so maybe I have better, I have a trinitron 21" and... that's about all. Have 2 80 GB to an IBM ( d'oh! ) and a seagate. Everything else could not compare. But what the hell are you doing with a radeon 7500, when you have everything else so great? I have a 2 years old 7200 for Pete's sake :blah:

Its a bit.. .you know... weak to be feared, isn't it? Come back when you have a useful machine.

I spent 10 minutes calling my computer all sorts of things cost it was messing up.

Man I'd love to not have any major bills to worry about and be able to just put money into a megasystem :p

yeah, ****= merde, but actually I call it saloperie, but there's no actual translation for this one ( damn english language, nowhere near as many insults as there should be :D )
-
That's much better than mine, but not quite top-of-the-line. Here is what I have at the moment:
Athlon TB 1400 (running at 1475) processor
512mb 266mhz (PC2100) ddr ram
2 IBM 75gb ata/100 7200rpm hard drives
Geforce3 standard (running at 250/575 mhz
52x cd drive
16/10/40 cd-rw drive
NEC FE2111 21" monitor
lots of fans :D (12 total, 5 six-inch 7500rpm "delta" type)
This setup is getting somewhat outdated now, but it still works reasonably well for my needs. At the end of the year I will just get whatever the latest stuff is that $3500 can buy. :D Still have not decided whether to get a desktop or a laptop though; I never really liked laptops much, as they are slower and pricier and I don't usually care for portability, but it seems that I may need one for college, and there appear to some on the market now that suit my needs well. Also, why the heck is 10 pounds considered "extremely heavy?" :wtf: It seems that the people who review these things have never hauled around 21" monitors... :D

what is 10 pounds worth in Kg? My screen: 43kg ( doesn't sound that much, but carrying that for more than a minute, w/o anything to have a good grip to, is a real torture... )

It better be almost twice as much as a pound, or y'all need to go out and get some serious exercise, or a construction job or something...

That is about 94.8 pounds; my monitor's weight is also somewhere around that. (heck, it weighs almost as much as myself :D) And yeah, moving those things around is very tough. :p But 10 pounds is lighter than some books and certainly should not be a problem...

Ahh, yes, my brother's computer. He kinda needs to keep it better than mine to make up for certain other inadequacies he has... oh well.
Corrections to Splinter's typos and errors:
- 1 60GB HDD and 1 15GB HDD
- CD/RW is 12x10x32, not 12x6x24
- It's called a GeForce2MX, not a "GeFroce"
And unlike him, I've already passed the "must have bigger and better" stage of computer upgrading. :D
But I must say, his Logitech Z-560's absolutely rule.

I have a stronger CPU and a GE FORCE 4 with 128 MB RAM and some other cool stuff. It's just that you have 500 more MB ram than I do. Of course, I am not a RAM nerd (no offence). Anyway, it is not so bad. Have fun "playing" with it. And be carefull not to hurt yourself. ;)
By the way, what's the point of making a whole thread about getting a new PC? Where did you get it? From outer space or something? :wtf:

put caps to Outer Space thank you :D ( I'm probably the only one to understand why I say that, but never mind :p )

I don't see Debian or Slackware posting profits period and they both make better distros than Red Hat ever could.
I used to think it was funny the way you bashed MS while shacking up with their Linux equivalent but I think I find the fact you gauge Linux distros on how much money they make even funnier.

actually i gauge linux distros on how ease of use, stability, ease of upgrading, etc
slackware and debian suck balls for desktops - they make good small dirty little servers but they are exactly ****TY for desktops
-
You can upgrade an entire Debian system with a single command and it's as solid as a rock. Slack is similar, it's package tools might not be as smart as Debians but since they just do their jobs without worrying about how many other programs they're going to break it still puts them miles ahead of RPM. Two out of three ain't bad, particularly when you consider that Red Hat struggles to barely get one.
As for them being unsuitable for desktops thats entirely dependent on how much work you're willing to put into it. If you're the type who's just installing Linux as an act of defiance against the mighty Microsoft and just want to click your fingers and have everything done for you then Red Hat has enough GUI tools and wizards to shield you from the deep, dark underbelly of Linux although I think Mandrake would be a much better choice but if you're really serious about your Linux (that desktop in the screenie took nearly two months of downloading, compiling, breaking, reformatting and reinstalling to get to that point and you know what? I'd do it all again in a heartbeat. In fact, when I finally get a new hard drive I'm going to attempt a full blown Linux from Scratch system.) then Slack, Debian, Gentoo (this one is of particular interest. Apparently it compiles everything as it installs it which means the install is automatically optimise for your system. If I had a faster processor and a fatter data pipe I'd definitely give this one a go) or LFS.
