Title: Western Light Carrier Finally Friggin Finished!!!
Post by: jonskowitz on September 26, 2001, 05:02:00 pm
Had a very, very rough time getting this model finished (four days and as five corrupted files later  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) ).  The problem was every time I tried to extrude the command tower it would do wierd things to the mesh (@#$%! Truespace)

Tech Description:

CVLs such as the HMS Invincible and the USS Ranger represent the newest design philosiphy in the west regarding the design of strike-craft carriers.  Super carriers such as the CVA are being replaced because of thier vulnerability to concentrated missile assaults, instead two or three of these smaller carriers operate together so that if one is lost the task force doesn't lose all of its strike-craft support.
Like most western designs, it lacks any hard-hitting armaments for use against capital ships.  It's close-in space defense weaponry is extremely heavy, boasting over a dozen missile and cannon emplacements.

Pretty nice...can't wait to see it textured.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

I also want to see some non-blurry closeups of those fighters! I'm glad there are finally lots of fighter models floating around, I hope they all make it into FS soon.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) Capships are cool, but I'm still looking for the perfect fighter...

For the record, my favorite DESIGN so far is the Actaeon...but it didn't really have enough detail. The best looking overall fighter...tough call, but they all belong to Venom.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) Possibly the Benkei.

Thanks for the pic updates...I'm definitely digging that F-44.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) Keep those models coming!

You know what?  That A-36 always did look a little odd to me, like something was missing...

It turns out that something IS missing from it.  After thumbing through the concept sketches I realized that when I made the model I forgot the elevators!  It's supposed to have elevators just to the rear of where the cockpit is, about half-way down on the fuselage...  That should help alleviate it's *blah* appearance.

Ugh!  Ditch the turret!  Or make it a little blister...... that would look so much better.  It dominates the fighter, and not really in a good way, if you know what I mean.

But canards are good.   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

[crosses arms and starts to pout]
... yeah but the 'crane-necked' turret allows it to fire over the front of the fighter and still be able cover the rear.   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/lol.gif)

I definately see what you mean, maybe it'll look better once I've had a chance to get the thing skinned...

I can understand your reasoning, but that fighter is designed to enter atmosphere (why else would it look like that) and that turret would be a massive aerodynamics problem.  Why not do something more like the bubble turrets on WWII bombers?  Stick it amidship instead, in a blister, with a (skinny - it's only 40mm) gun sticking out.

Whoa... You're right, that is cool. But Shrike is right, change the turret - a flat one (like the ones for beams) would look fine.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I actually like that current turret, with a good skin scheme it should look good, it has details that most turrets lack.

Bah, bomber turrets don't need details, you'll never see it clear  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) Better to save some polys.

I like the whole style of these mods. It's a pretty original idea. At least I haven't seen anything like it.

It's true that it is a nice turret, but IMHO with the rest of the ship looking all so nice and aerodynamic, the turret just reminds me of Drag Centralâ„¢. Wind tunnels forever!  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

That carrier kicks neck!! This is a very promising mod keep it up  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I agree, you have a fine mod coming on there. However the top of the carrier is *bare* ???!!!GASP!!!!!???? where are the polys going to rack up on this one?? well???!!!

Put something like 2 large (flat) turrets or a built up section or a box or 2 to one side or something...

Actually, you can't see it right now as it's not skinned, but the top of the carrier is for fighter recovery (so it has to be kept clear).  The idea is along the same lines as the angled deck on a modern carrier, so a recovery mishap doesn't interfere with your launch capacity.

Landing pads, elevators, and "traffic-control markings".

So... they still use chemical projectile weapons, but have artifical gravity?   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/lol.gif)

I don't understand what using the nice, flat deck on the ship has anything to do with artificial gravity...

The fighters would be held to the deck via magnetic clamps.  The elevators would simply be used to transfer the craft to the hangar for service and launch prep.  The only 'artificial gravity' on board is from the ship's thrusters (about .1g sustained at that...) which means that the elevator would need to be able to pivot 90-degrees to transfer the craft into the hangar, and another mechanism would be needed to move the ship back into launch position at the bow of the ship.  Certainly difficult but not entirely unfeasable.

Well, I would think if you don't have AG, you'd be more likely to use some sort of clamp that could physically grasp ahold of the fighter.  If you have some sort of gravity, well, that's easy, you just drop the fighter down until it falls to the deck.

so in fact the front of the ship is in fact the top of the ship  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Gravitationally speaking... yes.  The Hangar and the command tower are arranged at a right-angle to the ship's direction of travel to take advantage fo the ship's own acceleration.  The recovery deck is arranged along the ship's direction of travel to make
fighter recovery easier.  The Launch facility is at the front of the ship aligned along the ship's direction of travel... because... it looks cool that way  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Far better  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) It also makes the whole bomber look bigger. Sort of rescaling the way you look at it.

I finally got one of the skins done (the USS Ranger's paintscheme).  What do you think of it now?

I didn't think the first turret was that bad... ok maybe it was but it was only the third model I ever did  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
