Title: Problem with Open 3.4 and Shivans?
Post by: MoodyB on January 15, 2003, 07:44:56 pm
Hel all,

Just been playing FS2 again, after a long time away from it,using the open3.4 (non debug) exe.Excellent work:)

Here's the problem:

I'm playing the 3rd? mission, where you have to protect the portal from the Shivans. All fine and good until you destroy a Shivan ship. The debris from the explosion is still being recognised as an ' enemy ' so the mission doesn't carry on.

Any advice?

Can you be more specific?

Sorry about the iffy explanation.I was a bit tired:)

Right,I think it's the 3rd mission in the campaign when you have just discovered the Ancients subspace portal. You have to protect it from the Shivans until backup arrives.

The problem is that backup never comes,so you cant finish the mission. The Shivan fighters and capital ships that are there to begin with are destroyed.I even destroyed the Shivan cargo pods that are in the mission to see if that would make a difference but it didnt. It's as though an event isnt being triggered.I've tried playing it with the proper retail exe and it works fine (backup does arrive, you can finish the mission)

If I use manual targetting I can still see debris chunks from the capital ships that are about 20,000 units away,so my guess is that because these chunks are still around,it's not continuing the mission.

I left the game sitting for 20mins,hoping the chunks would explode or disappear, but they didnt.

Does this make any sense?:)

even with the normal exe you're able to target the ship debris. I doubt this is the reason for the proble.

Standard questions:
A) Do you have any MODs installed?

B) Did you make a new pilot for fs2_open?

If debris don't come up when you press 'h' I doubt they are the problem, since it's pretty much the same 'is hostile' check.  You should take a look at the mission and see what's needed to get the mission to progress.  It is possible that you are encountering a mission design bug that :v: left around; there are a few of them here and there, rather than a problem with FSOpen.  Is this something that has happened more than once?  It may be a sexp that was repaired or altered subtily in the new build, but I suspect that it is something mission-specific.

I'm playing through the main campaign again using the SCP EXE, and I just finished that mission.  I had no problems whatsoever.  Perhaps it's a :v: mission bug?

Try this build - it's the most up-to-date.
