where did you see this?
I think it sounds quite good. terrific, almost.

Yeah, I heard about this last night. Apparently they're only releasing it to certain governments and various agencies so they can improve security, but it'll get out instantly anyway.
They'll probably try and sue everyone who brings out patches for Windows.

ahh... that explains it. I don't even watch normal tv...
*goes to check*
ok... so lots of people are unhappy with the new licensing plans (understandable), so microsoft decides to release almost all source code so governments etc. doesn't switch over to linux.
-
Now THAT'S a joke. MS going open-source?
-
:wtf: Would this be for the latest version (XP/2000/etc.) or some older versions? Somehow this does not really sound like MS to me...
If they are trying to fight Linux, does it mean that they are going open-source or something?
-
The open sourcers don't seem to be too hot on the idea... Microsucks... (http://www.opensource.org/advocacy/shared_source.php)

well nope, don't dream, that's called shared source, by the look of it, you're nort allowed to do much with it. So here's the question: what's the point?
-
MS get free improvements made by governments, and sell it on as Windows XXP or XP+ or (special internet edition) XXXP or (Castlemaine editon) XXXXP.....
EDIT - and I wrote that without even reading the link Maeg posted......
I know for a afact that several UK councils have at the very least researched replacing Windows & Office with Linux & StarOffice to save on the costs.

which is one of the reasons they're doing this (another reason is that swedish government started to think about researching the possibilities of an open source alternative). Their new licensing is teh bad. And kind of uncomprehensible too.

Somebody steals the code, gives it to one of the WINE guys, WINE becomes 100% compatible with all windows software overnight.
Linux becomes number one choice for the 'my operating system actually works and runs almost all software' enthusiast... ;)

if it's 100% backaward compatible, I'm 1000% for it :D
[completly disregarding what is said in the first post] I hate MS, They've caused me more troubles than ANYTHING else in my life - yeah, I have an happy life - [/ completly disregarding what is said in the first post]

For a second I thought lances would fall tommorow...
but it ends up it's just another screwy, half-rotten scheme from Microsoft.
-
there's another not-so-rosy side to it.
The current way M$ are handling copy protection through the proposed palladium platform is bad enough - wtf is going to happen when govornments start writing law enforcement patches into software for regional versions?
Compatibility will go down the pan!

That might not be much of an option... It will depend on Microsoft mean by "strictly opt-in." As I understand it, programs require digital signatures before they'll run on Palladium-enabled hardware which will make it quite difficult (but not impossible, MS can't make attempting to eradicate open source software too obvious) for open source programs to run.
-
No matter how big or powerful Microsoft gets, the more it pushes, the harder it will fall. Palladium will get ripped to pieces and instead of simply hacking the MS website, disgruntled hackers (yes, hackers) will move from petty vandalism to completely irradiating the entire MS server network.
Proportional response.
Oh, and I think this is good news for Lindows. They'll be able to make that 100% compatible, so we'll all have the nice choice of a cool hybrid OS; or Linux with perfect Windows emulation.
-
Hey...an operating system without some of the fancy crap that does all that I want it to do (play games, write e-mails, surf the web, in general be a power user)...then I'll switch at the drop of a hat.
Really...Linux is a great enthusiasts OS but I still think it has SERIOUS issues on its usability and overall acceptance. Its getting there...if they can push it over the top and turn it into a real competitor....they will give MS a serious run for their money. A serious run! :D
-
Do a Google search for Lindows. It's cool.
-
Lindows is crap. Any distribution that encourage general use of the root account is retarded.
edit: Also, Palladium isn't just about Microsoft, it's being backed by Intel and AMD (among others) as well which means chipset and CPU support is guaranteed.
