Title: Drinking Bosch Beer and Grading Mid-Term Examinations
Post by: Rampage on January 23, 2003, 12:43:05 pm
Introduction
----------------

Ah...  Mid-Terms are in.  I took a day off today to brush up on grading my history student's mid-term examinations.  So far, half of them are horrible and probably will get kicked out of the school where I teach at for bad grades.  For a change, I did not use Scan-Tron (TM) for the tests.  Instead, I gave them a horrible essay on current American foreign policy.  I expected a 250-word essay.  One student, cleverly enough, wrote "Screw Iraq" over and over at the end of his essay to fill in the word requirement.  (He probably kept track of the number of words used.)

Why I Abhor Scan-Tron (TM) Tests
-------------------------------------------

There was one year when I gave a 25 question Scan-Tron (TM) test for my history class.  The students handed in their papers in due time and I rushed off to the office to grade these papers.  [One thing I DO like Scan-Tron (TM) tests is how every time a student fills in a wrong bubble, the grading machine makes a queer clicking noise.  For those who do miserably, the machine will keep clicking until the Scan-Tron (TM) is fed out again.  That noise just relieves my stress after a teaching day.]  I gave my alumni their tests back the next day.  (I hate stalling.)  One student [He got a 64.] came to me after class and complained that his Scan-Tron (TM) had red marks on the side that didn't match the bubble line.  I took it home and analyzed it.  I found out that I had fed this Scan-Tron (TM) [and several others] backwards into the machine.  So I re-graded his paper and suprisingly enough, the actual grade was only TWO POINTS higher than the wrong grade!

Going Back to MODding
-----------------------------

Anyway, back to MODding.

I always thought scan-tron's were for lazy teachers who dind't care alot about the tests as multiple choice and true/false questions are a slackers dream.

I always wanted to find out if I stuck a little piece of magnetic tape on a scantron test.

Anyway- only 250 words or 25 questions? What grade do you teach?:wtf:

I'd give the "Screw Iraq" kid a 10. He's pretty perceptive- that's just about all of American foreign policy right there. Answer to everything.

Are you a history teacher? cool...

The scan-tron things always seem to place in the marks slightly off the correct spot; I cannot ever recall getting a test which had them lined up exactly right. :p

Yes.  I'm not just a regular history teacher; I'm a MPC (Math-Physics-Chemistry)* history teacher!

*Even though I only teach history, I still like math and analytical sciences.  Personally, I'm a teacher who can't teach outsite the book. (I don't have to.)
