Whenever I start my computer for the first time I've started to get this. It doesn't happen on restart and it doesn't happen if the computers been off then on again for a few minutes - it's only after a while. Letting Windows do its thing works but it happens every morning when I turn it on - obviously I'm worried and want to get rid of it. Has anyone any thoughts? I've run "scanreg" and it didn't find anything, I backed up that "clean" copy of the reg and again the problem occurs the next morning.
Obviously backups of important shizz have been made... but I want to nuke this problem, anyone know how?
Thanks :)
Edit: sorry for the crap picture quality - mis-set PSPs settings.

I think your best bet to get completely rid of the problem is to reinstall windows... (clean install, not update)
Or you can start uninstalling softwares, drivers, tweaks and other registry changes you have installed lately. It is possible that newly installed software may cause registry corruption.
Another change is a virus, a trojan or a bad spyware.
-
First try scandisc and adaware. Then try downloading ashampoo winoptimizer suite from www.ashampoo.com Its registy cleaner module will intercept all bad and irrelevant registry entries.

From that message it appears that there is some program built into Windows that checks the registry automatically every time you start up, but I personally have never heard of such a thing (or it does a particularly rotten job, seeing as how many errors the registry is riddled with :p). It could be a virus, but try using one of the numerous registry checkers out there to see if anything turns up just in case (I think NAV includes one).

ad-aware is outdated, new version is coming but until then I recommend using Spybot - Search & Destroy.

There's been scanreg util since W98. I am not sure how it works in W2k or XP. But it wasn't all that good in W9x OSes.

do as I do: don't shut down your pc :D
-
as you all probalby know ( ) the registry runs the computer, so therefore when you mess up the registry, the computer doesn't boot properly.
always keep a backup of your registry., then restart in safe mode, and replace the old registry with the new one, then restart... i guess

It doesn't recognize your name. Change it back to Thunder and it should work properly. :p

Shuddup ;)
Thanks for the input guys... I'd like an option that doesn't involve reinstalling Windows, since I've got a shiny Chaintech Zenith 7NJS awaiting installation that will also prompt a reformat, but I haven't got the other processors I need (namely the CPU etc..) to do it now.

there's many windows regedit repair tools...
i think windows even comes with one, you just have to find it, if you can't, download one.
oh wait a minute... i have one that'll work, and it's legal too.
PM me if you need it stil

you should also try running Windows in safe mode, then manually going through reg entries that are checked on startup. get a list of your startup programss... if I remember the command for that...
usually I prefer doing **** manually rather than using progs.

The command for that is:
START --> RUN --> MSCONFIG
click "Startup"

Lets say this together now people.
scanreg /repair
As for "spybot", its nothing more than paranoia-ware. Half the damn "critical alerts" are things like not having your internet cache cleared, history cleared, etc.
Out of 20 alerts, only maybe....two were actual spyware. The rest were stupid cookies, or misc bull**** alerts to scare the user. IMO, its not worth downloading, and I promptly uninstalled it afterwards.
-
Vertigo1, I believe you missed Settings-->File sets...
I don't keep "System internals" nor "Usage tracking" settings searching enabled... If it does not find any real spyware, the better.
-
Ahhh, the registry... one of the many reasons I loathe Windows. I think I'd just rain down fire on the damn thing, format it! :D

Easier said than done when you use Windows 9x ;)

It's not so much that as the noise this thing makes :)

I don't know if you fixed your problem but I had the same happen to me. I formatted my hard drive and after a couple of installs I got the same message.
Believe or not after running Norton WinDoctor (from Norton SystemWorks 2001 Professional Edition) a couple of times the problem got fixed. If I recall right MSN Messenger was screwing something up with the registry...
Anyway, hope I helped....
-
Actually, I would advise against running "WinDoctor". Last time I ran it (granted, this was with the 2000 version of Systemworks) it screwed up windows so that I couldn't run any shareware programs legitly. (even if I downloaded and installed a shareware program after running windoctor)
Either run scanreg /repair or just boot to safe mode, backup your data, and re-install windows ontop of itself. You may have to re-install a few programs but that should cure your registry woes.
-
Might be MSN Messanger then - I did just install the latest edition of it.. perhaps scrubbing all records of that might be a good start - since scanreg, TweakUI etc... haven't seemed to have worked.
-
hey I've got a problem with my registry, I did something to it and now I no longer have the start menu search thingy "find files or folders", anyone know how to fix that?
-
TweakUI + Repair Registry? I mean the function must still exist, it just needs to rebuild the display reference....
...I think :)
-
There is an option to repair RegEdit, but not the registry itself. Just boot into safe mode, goto your DOS (command) prompt and type 'scanreg /repair' and see if it fixes your problem.
One question, how hot is your chip running now? Have you started to overclock your processor? (I'm asking because this is one of the usual indicators that you've pushed your chip too far. Most of the time its just a BSOD on starting windows, or instability in general.)
