How about a reticle that shows the distance of missiles launched at you?
So when the LAUNCH flashes, you see a distance indicator showing the missile's direction speed, and distance.
-
That's what the little yellow triangles around your reticle are for. They show you the direction the missiles are coming from, and the length of the line shows their distance. You can tell how fast they're approaching from the timing of the warning beeps.
-
clever, aint it.
If the game can track the distance of a missle and display it as a line or rate of beeps, then surely it must be able to get a distance counter... though distance is irrelevant if you dont know speed.
Hell, just hit counter measure and boost when it beeps a lot.
-
so what if 2 fighters each shoot 8 torns at you
16 counters ? :D
-
just display the counters over the tirangles they correspond with, it makes sense
-
Bleah. The HUD is cluttered enough as it is. No way I'm going to pay attention to tiny little numbers when I can just go by the beeps and keep my eyes free to actually watch where I'm going.
-
Fighters pilots real ones have a distance to ground thing (well knida) and thier little "alltitude" "altitude" "alttitude you dumb ..."
but they don't yet have "chinees embasy" "chinees embasy" "chinees embasy" :D :p

I'd say the lines and the beeps are even better indicators of the distance than actual numbers are. Its become instinct to know exactly where the missiles are and how much time I have to evade.
-
ZB voiced my opinion precisely, ergo there was no need to do aught but quote him.
-
I like my HUD to be full of crap, but the beeps are good as well for when I don't want to look at the indicators. I can easily imagine lines like the current ones with the distance and the relative speed (like +70, or -45, in the case of a torpedo) tacked on the end.
