Yeah, FS2 has finally been hosted by Home of the Underdogs. Which could well mean an instant doubling of the amount of people in the FS community, since they get something like 900 accesses a day. You can thank me in cash or gifts with lots of fiddly technologic bits.

HOTU says that Volition has the rights to the game...
-
Seems like a dubious claim to me... but hey! The source is out and it's been out of print for a while now.
And guess what?! They have the Port website on their links for it! WAKKA!! (http://members.aol.com/lowark/FS2/Smilies/wakka.gif)
-
just curious: what fs2 sale version was ripped?
-
Random *****: You didn't pimp or add HLP to related links :doubt:

I believe Volition has the copyrights to most of the code (except for the stuff they didn't write) and things like the art, sounds, etc. Interplay may have the publishing rights for the Freespace series. But I'm no lawyer so this is just a guess.
-
Surely they don't have all 3 CDs worth, right? No point to playing FS2 without the cutscenes.
-
We could only fit in the three end cutscenes- they're really huge, Interplay did a ****ty job at compression.
Which is EXACTLY why I was trying to get a straight answer about movie formats out of the Source people. Now, it's too late, but hey.
Underdogs doesn't know any more about the game than we do, I'm sure. Don't get your knickers in a bunch about Volition having had the full rights all this time.
And I did have a pimp for HLP- I've recommended it twice on the board, and mentioned it in the readme. So there.
Oh, and I haven't the ****ingest what version it was. When I got it it was already ripped and ready for compression- I basically just added the cutscenes and a readme, packaged it, and sent it up.
-
they've done a facelift since I was there last time... nice.
-
FS2 there is only 219MB big. It has no cutscenes or high-res files. I wonder what else has been cut...
Readme howewer says where you can download the missing pieces.
It's still just a rip. I wonder if there will be any problems with mods and total conversions....
I wonder if we could somehow host the real cd-images... :nervous:
-
ISOs are way too big- I think she's got three total on there, and they aren't even normally-sized games. Keep in mind that HOTU is in a constant state of crisis over its bandwidth- she explicitly told me that it had to be at about the size it is now.
But I uploaded the sound .vp to another site last night, so it's available at least to the HOTU regulars.
-
There database is currently down, guess they got overloaded :eek2:

It was off and on all morning ... I DLed a game ,.. 253 Meg,...at 10KBps :| First time I've had a straight 'save as' download take 6 hours on here since I got cable
-
Wow i`ve got cable to, i`ll try d/l it also.. I`ll let you know how long it took once it`s done.
(edit) hmmm, still hard to access the site, maybe try later

I had the same problem when getting SS2 from there, but I just left it on all night and it was done in the morning. :D The site is very good, but the download servers are way too slow. :doubt:
-
'Cos nobody clicks the banners, and nobody sends money to pay for bandwidth. :doubt:

Well yea this we knew ;) I don't even acknowledge any banners m,,,,espeically pop ups ,...got a good habit of instantly closing anything that pops up on me :D
Don't get me wrong i wasn't upset at it, just took me by surprise is all,...normally a site that has ow bandwidth like that I could use Get Right so I didn't have to just sit back and wait all day,....but it's all good ;)
-
Guess why there are so many. And you'd better damn well "acknowledge" some banners if you DL something from there- we have enough server outages as it is.
Eh- anyway, apparently the cracker included even less than I thought. No sound and only the end cutscenes, but we're working on it. It'd be really nice to get those cutscenes DivXed, so we could fit on the sound .vp, but I dunno... DAMN stuff takes up a lot of space.
-
This is great news. The site seems legitmate enough. I'll spread the news to my students.
Talking about ISO(s). What I really want is an ISO of Descent 2 and D2: Vertigo. Does HOTU have that? (I can't find it anywhere, not even an used copy!) :nervous:
-
yay! my CD died a while back and I don't have an install on any of my hardrives, although perhaps i could still extract the movies and whatever else isn't included
-
Yoda: Go on the board when you're done with the download, find the link in Tech Help, and get the messages .vp- it's apparently pretty important if you don't want all the messages to just flash by.
Rampage: Looks like you can buy a used copy. A link is provided in the entry.
-
Good work getting FS2 on underdogs, although it would be even better with sound included (I can live without the cutscenes). I hesitate to recomend anyone to download a game without sound. I tried the link http://210.0.163.146/fileshare/stu_fs2.rar for downloading voice files (mentioned in the underdog tech help forum) but it only got me to a textpage looking like this:
Rar!;Ðs PñtÀ€*Ϩ´NR ¢™ì™x—G.5 stu_fs2.vp™PÌÌÑP÷º H?U[ª##D?@Q‘´GI%©D?IM»—DÝÉ™É"E7%ó9—r"Sn>jòDÔ—™Író–ÚRîù¬Ík’$[œ¼Ík—A9%Þ_#$‚“?ÑQ%GÐHè m¤€ª–×A«5w26ˆªwøn}-“¡° Uo~ûïž|ði~)ïøMyø/Ï·Ï¥âJÄ~Oï‰iáî~?#èx~Gý§‡ô¼/ãû>b0‰éíÿwŸß~ó}Ù?@´ Ù ™?õô—'ý`CÉÿôCø‡å/ü|_+Ì®ˆpð°}~/
and it goes on...
I dont need this download for myself, got two copies of FS2 (one scratched cd in the first set), but ppl have asked me where to find FS2 in a hardware forum i hang out at.
-
Blimey, there's someone we don't often see - how's tricks, Fafner?
-
It's possible you don't have RAR files associated with anything, so it's trying to open it up as a text file. Save it, and open it with WinRAR instead, see if that works.

install WinRAR first
-
I also uploaded the VP file uncompressed, and it should still be there. Some people were having problems with it, but I'm not sure whether to chalk that up to pilot error or not.
At any rate, it works for most.
-
OK i'll install winrar
and hi diamondgeezer, all well here ;)

I've advertised this download at a hardware forum I hang out at, and several ppl are interested but the 640 resolution scares them off... It wouldnt be possible to make a separate download for the high res files? like with the soundfiles.
I'm guessing it's the sparky_hi_fs2.vp that is needed? , can it be added to the fs2 directory after install, or must it be "installed". If it's not possible to upload it to underdogs maybe we can share it on kazaa?
-
AFAIK simply copying that file to the FS2 directory will enable you to play in high res. However I`ve never been able to test it directly as the only easy way to get hold of that file is by doing a full install of FS2 :)
-
I think I heard that if you don't install the hi-res stuff initially, the game will never allow to you to use the hi-res art, even if you add it later. Perhaps a registry hack could remedy this?
-
The game will let you run in high res if the high res VP is installed, you don't have to reinstall if you can get the VP. (I've got 2 FS2 installs, one which I had installed with the high res pack and one which I didn't and have used high res in both.)
-
Thanx Edrick,
I also made a second install at 640 (before I saw your post lol) to make sure.
So if anyone could upload the sparky_hi_fs2.vp at underdogs I would be very pleased. Meanwhile I'm sharing my sparky_hi_fs2.vp at Kazaa, but I dont leave my comp on at night (problems with cooling) so the underdog upload is really needed, also if more ppl can share their sparky_hi_fs2.vp at Kazaa it would help those that only got the 640x480 download.
:) Faf
-
I`ve already put it and the voice files .vp (who's name slips me at the moment) on kazaa.
-
If you mean for the HOTU community, they're pretty dead-set against Kazaa, seeing as it's a warez pit and the easiest way to get a nasty virus short of sleeping with a $12 hooker.
-
Yeah I know what you mean. I never download software from that Kazaa but since you never actually execute a .vp file could you actually catch a virus that way?
-
I mean it for the ppl at my hardware forum, I've advertised the underdog release, and several ppl have downloaded it. Some of these have 21'' screens, and 640x480 isnt all that fun on a 21'' screen. I would like to help them out, and if underdog cant upload the high res files, the only way is to share the vp files on Kazaa.
By the way, I cant access the soundfile rar anymore, have you taken it down?
For now i share both sparky_hi_fs2.vp and stu_fs2.vp on Kazaa.
-
Stealth, with you getting a server and all, wouldn't it be possible to, you know...
-
'Tain't my upload site, I think it's a HOTU community server or summat.
You think we can get Fileplanet to host it? 'Cos HOTU won't for long and they're very strongly anti-warez, and thus vehemently anti-Kazaa (comes from having the ISDA crawling up your ass every ten minutes because you're the biggest abandonware site in town).

Where can I download the FreeSpace 2 cutscenes?

You`ll be very lucky to find them online. In fact I`m amazed that you`ve managed to find the other missing files (where did you get them from?)
One big problem is that unlike the .vp files most people didn`t copy the files off of the CD's so they aren`t available as easily on kazaa.

I didn't ;)
Does Kazaa Lite use the same people as Kazaa?

Yeah. Kazaa also shares with grokster as well (I think there may be another client but its name escapes me at the moment).

Download it using GetRight or another download manager.

On that note, where can I find the music?
-
Just make up your own as you play. When you're scouting in the nebula, hum softly "oooooh aaaaaah mmmmmm MMMMmmmm," While you're dogfighting, shout "DA da da da da DA DA DA!! da da DAA DAAAAAA!" And on the main hall just go "Dum... Dum... Dum... Da da Dum... Dum... Dum... Da DAA Dum..."

What's rather scary is that GE has actually got quite close to the FS2 music  Especially the mainhall tune
