Title: tbl reference guide
Post by: aldo_14 on October 14, 2001, 08:34:00 am
Ok, I've just done a quick breakdown on all the tbl files in roof_fs2.vp, and their purpose.... please correct any errors

ai.tbl - sets the 'skill' of the ai in the various difficulty levels for each ai setting... uses 0-100 integer values for 5 attributes of the ai.  Max 50 AI classes.

asteroid.tbl - file to indicate all asteroid types and their physical characteristics (from comment lines), gives pof file, explosion blast, speed, LOD distances

credits.tbl - credits for the programming team, etc.  Nothing too complex here... don't know of any limits.

cutscenes.tbl - gives filenames of MVE files on disk (inc. Cd no), description and title - presumably for viewing in the techroom.

fireball.tbl - specifies the filenames for explosions and their purpose - has 'LOD' value, not sure what that is

help.tbl - help overlay stuff... i think it has co-ordinate values for where text and graphics are drawn on the screen, notable for drawing the lines

hud.tbl - list of shield icons (filenames) used in the game, limit of 40

icons.tbl - list of brieifng icons, files for each state (higlighted, etc)

launchhelp.tbl - text for help box in launcher

lightning.tbl - attributs of up to 10 lighting bolts, including size, lifetime, texture map.  Also attributs of 10 'storm types' chosen in FRED2, with the bolt types & numbers used in that storm (up to 10)

mainhall.tbl - stuff for main hall - (I think) has co-ordinate points for each interactable item on the screen, timing values for sound, flags for activating sounds (mouseover selected regions?), animations..... B5 team will understand what all this does - i don't  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

medals.tbl - list of medals and their names & corresponding bitmaps... kill values where appropriate (i.e. for Ace), and a 'num mods: ' entry - not sure what this is for

menu.tbl - not sure... has a lot of NULL values - possibly precursor to mainhall.tbl?  Or now hardcoded?

messages.tbl - list of standard messages for each persona, corresponding message text, wav file and head ANI.

mflash.tbl - list of muzzle flash types  - seems to set the various sized explosions from the gunbarrel (size, pcx name, offset from firepoint).

music.tbl - list of music soundtracks - gives 'sub' files for various events in the mission (setting ambient music mood).... not sure about the numbers

nebula.tbl - names of background PCX files and poof files for (flyable) nebulas.

pixels.tbl - not sure - seems to set some default 'master' No Dim values for ALL ship textures.

rank.tbl - gives score limit, wav file, medal PCX and text for being promoted.

ships.tbl -the ships and stats.... player ship precedence.

sounds.tbl - gives integer references to game & interface sound (WAV) files...has values for default volume, fading (if 3d sound - i.e. flyby).  Cannot be added to(?).  Also a section for the flyby sounds - 2 per species.

species.tbl - techroom info - including the actual text, whether it is initially in the techroom, text description & animation.  Don't think entries can be added.......

ssm.tbl - blank table, for the aborted subspace missile strike

stars.tbl - sets allowed background (standard) PCXs, sets star PCX's, their name and their attributes, sets the 'space debris' files for in and out of nebulas

strings.tbl - list of messages - not sure how this works - some amusing ones though -
24, "Species of target changed to: %s"
9, "You whacked yourself down to %7.3f percent hull.\n"
177, "Your fighter is running out of oil.  Please check under the\nhood and add more if necessary"
178, "Freespace is very tired.  It is shutting down to get some rest."

tips.tbl - the little pieces of advice at the start of the game..... can't see anyone wanting to alter this atall

traitor.tbl - text, recommendation and message file for debriefing after firing upon friendlies

tstrings.tbl -Not sure.... list of text, including command briefing info, and techroom stuff.... possibly redundant info?

weapon_expl.tbl -filenames for explosions.... PCX filename, LOD value (?)

weapons.tbl - the weapons and stats.
