Title: Animated jumpgates
Post by: Sandwich on October 15, 2001, 07:22:00 pm
While chatting with Aldo about how modeling jumpgates was boring, it hit me: why not make an animated jumpgate?

The only animation on a model that the game supports is thrusters, so I figured out a way to use them to animate my very own opening into subspace.

I cooked up a quickie model to test it out on, and using my digital camera I took a movie of the in-game animation on my screen. Unfortunately it's very dark, so you can't see anything but the animation, but you can get the picture. Download the movie here (//"http://www.geocities.com/sandvich/fs2/files/animated_gate.zip"). can't we model a sun? we cover the surface of the sun whit flames and then texture them whit a yellow Thruster.ani. Would that work? would be cool a real sun thus a real supernova (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

The movie isn't clear, I know. What you are looking at is not the animation of a ship jumping in/out. It is the center portion of a jump gate - a Knossos, essentialy. There are no ships jumping in or out, yet you still have the effect.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Look where it's stored. GeoCities. As I discovered, they don't allow RAR files. But since RAR compressed better than ZIP, and since I'm on dial-up...  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

That's some majorly weird stuff you have there... I like it.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Can you post the model so we can have a better look of what's going on there?

I'll do one better: POF and COB ("http://www.geocities.com/sandvich/fs2/files/gate.zip").

Keep in mind that it's a very simplified model, for testing purposes only. It's also relatively small, at 635 meters diameter.

I'll probably include this concept in a Knossos add-on to the Arcadia - when I get around to it.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

One last thing: the textures of both sides of the gates' center are not flipped - I made them reversed from each other to see which way I liked best.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

I always thought about how cool it would be to have animated textures, and I thought it would be possible (because of our thrusters), but I never had enough knowledge to put it to practice and give it a shot. This is exactly what I wanted to see. And it works brilliantly! Top job!  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/icons/icon14.gif)
