Title: Newtonian Physics in FS?
Post by: Baron MacDoblin on February 09, 2003, 05:41:06 pm
Is it possible to have true Newtonian physics in FS? And high speeds? I mean, 10,000 KPS speeds? Or is this something I should beat the I-War people with?

It sure is......

......if you rewright the phsyics part of the code :p

Hey Dohg :p

Yeah, what I thought. What I really want to know is the 10,000 KPS part.

The freespace engine isn't made for anything that fast I don't think.

I'm sure if you were a coder, it could be done, or hell, I think you could just mess with the tables so yur fighters could go however fast you want. But that would be **** compared to the only 2km long orion and naything else in the game..

bottom line: It's not a great Idea for Freespace without serious modding for such a little difference

There is a velocity mod for FS2 that makes all the ships go really fast, but I am not sure about FS1.

That velocity MOD is for fs1 and fs2. Comes with 2 sets of tables.

yeah, it's the best mod ever :)
everything goes two times as fast, and it's cool enough like that, don't think it needs to be faster.

Yeah, but it makes the fighters just a little too manueverable.

I think it's pretty well done. Only problem is that the already too small Orion goes by too slow.

you mean too fast right?

FS was meant to handle more like a WWII dogfighter than a Newtonian space sim. More fun that way, plus you get to cack yourself laughing everytime your afterburners switch off and you slow down...

Too true, it's not like FS has ever been accused of being realistic...

As for the 10000 kps part, I suppose it could be done, but you are looking at going out-of-level after like .02 seconds at full throtle.  You don't want to go that fast for any reason.  Not to mention the problems that AI would have with any major changes to the physics code or major changes (orders of magnitude) to speed.  Play the game at 4x speed if you want to go faster.

I got up at six stood out in the freezing cold, only to be called back in because school is on a one hour delay...

*Goes to cupboard and looks for caffeine pills*
