Do you have to write poems for english class? I had to do that some years ago; very, very difficult and frustrating.

As you can see, swedish is the beautiful language in the world.

By the way, I didn't write that one. :p
Originally posted by Black WolfI don't know Plaths, but if you like Blake you'd do well to try Milton. T. S. Eliot is always worthwhile. You might like Yeats from the 20th c. or Shelley from the 19th. If you enjoy language in and of itself, try Gerard Manley Hopkins (he dances the sounds masterfully and carefully, and is one of the few poets I know who can be florid and actually make it work, and work well).
You have to get the right poet, and the right poem. I like a lot of William Blakes stuff, and Sylvia Plaths (weird, but good once you know what she's talking about). I don't have too much experience though - anyone have any suggestions as to good poets to read?

Hmmm... I'm surprised... No comments on the Hyena castrate haiku :p

Actually, CP, methinks you'd like a certain kind of Japanese poetry called Haiku - it has a very rigid mathematical framework you need to work in. First line must be composed of 5 syllables, second line of 7, and the third and final line of 5 once again. Aside from that, you're completely free do write whatever you like.

Yes, I had to do some of that before. The problem is that, while the syllable constraints are not too bad, it is hard to write a whole lot in just three short sentences; you have to drop and condense words everywhere.
hehe, Carroll (the guy who wrote that) was a mathematician. :D
Does math qualify as poetry? One could argue that it is poetry in a sense, just of a different kind. :D
