Title: Motherboard question
Post by: Ulundel on February 15, 2003, 09:10:49 am
I'm planning to buy a new PC here and would like to know about motherboards a little. First, I can't understand almost a thing here: Mainboard Asus P4S8X Soc.478/SiS648/SA/R/6xH/1394/USB2.0/LAN

Then I'd like to know something about fans-CPU-mainboard compatibility.

Anything. Suggestions, articles, whatever can you think of. :)

from the socket type, you can tell it's compatibiltiy with processors. Socket 478 and 423 are for P4 CPUs, Socket A is for AMD Athlon processors, Socket 370 is for P3 and Celeron.

USB2.0 obviously means it has USB Sockets, 2.0 version, that's always good., YOu connect hardware to USB.

Sis 648 is the chipset. LAN means a LAN card,.

As for cpu/mainboard compatibility read all about it above. Also you need to check mainboard/RAM compatibility, (you obviously can't install DDRAM or RDRAM on a SDRAM motherboard. Also check for an integrated soundcard, should you need one, though I suggest getting an Audigy, it's only 800 EEK these days.

Eh, here's all the information provided by ASUS: http://www.asus.com/products/mb/socket478/p4s8x/overview.htm

As for the fan, you could tell someone to stand behind your computer all the time and blow air into it constantly.

Here's the deal:

I just bought GeForce 4 MX440. Though it pretty much sucks (that's what everyone say; personally I like it) there's no point to buy a new one again. Well, maybe I'd sell it and get GeForce 4 Ti 64 MB but they have only the 128 MB one which costs too much.

I also have DVD drive, so I'll keep that one too along with 256 MB sdram, network card, floppy drive and a 15 GB HDD.

What I need is a CD burner, new motherboard, Athlon XP 2100+, a new fan, 40 GB extra HDD and of course a new case.

well, you definately need USB 2.0, I don't know why they even sell things without it, I guess, you'll be going for the integrated sound card then. For the Athlon, you'll need a SocketA mainboard, with SDRAM support then.

something along these lines, perhaps...

Maybe that one, yeah.

Oh, and I forgot the sound card. I surely don't want an integrated one.

One more Q: is is possible to connect CPU, mainboard and fan by yourself and do they give the...the...the...toiteplokk (don't know the english word) with the case.

of course, why do you think you have to pay for plastic box then?

Great. But what about that fan/CPU/maiboard connecting then?

The ones that come standard with the CPUs are usually good enough. Otherwise, the recommended CPU is marked on the cooler.

NO, I mean can I connect motherboard with CPU and fan by myself. CPUs seem to be...glued on.
