Title: All Starcraft: Freespace 2 - Screenies

Here you can view pictures of work so far, and examples done in Starcraft with FS2 inspired thingies...

This is to show the community there is progess and new hope in modding this RTS!!!!

A perfect example of why we need a way to edit engine Glows :(.

 



Here is my attempt at changing the interface, some expeeriment pictures. NO THEY WERE NOT CREATED IN PSP or PS and then just passed off... although there PCX was :)

Loading Screen: Enlarge the FS2 logo, put it behind the Star Craft title. Get rid of Dugalle and put in Bosch. Get rid of Arturas and put in a Vasudan. Under starcraft, have in cool font "uber-1337 FS2 edition" or something to that effect. And in the bottom left corner, have the volition head.

Oh, if you want to get all freaky-deaky, replace Kerrigan with Petrarch, but leave the eyes

See the colours on the wireframe? That is only supposed to occur when the ship's damaged - the colours indicate the levels of damge to certain parts of the ship. Unfortunately, due to the way PSP handles palettes, that is the result even when its at full strength (as in this pic).

I do have a solution, but RetroGRP (one of the tools for modding starcgraft) refuses to work for me, so I can't solve it ATM :(.

OIC - have you tried if Photoshop works properly?

 Don't have it :). But I do have a solution at the graphical end - just not the SC end. I'll be retrying soon anyway :)

Would it be possible to make the units larger? It just seems strange to have an Ursa smaller than a Myrmydon. :D

They're just trying to simply replace units right now. Star Craft, as mentioned before, has never been one for scale units.

Believe me, you wouldn't want to download it yet - the novelty of seeing FS ships in SC without a campaign to back them up wears off fast, and apart from the Myrmidon, all of the sprites need a lot of fixing.

And Styxx, yes to maybe. I noticed that the Ursa was fairly small, and given the quality of the sprite (which really isn't that good, I'm seriously looking at redoing it - but first I need a way to edit SC engine glows, which so far hasn't been forthcoming :(.

kwels.............................. i might have also got around the whole stardraft issue with windows xp, by using WinMPQ, which allows me to view MPQ files (MPQ's are like VP files & WinMPQ views them like WINZIP with a similair interface and simplicity of VPVIEW32) easily. WinMPQ allows me to also add and take away the files at will, but i think Starcraft Version 1.6 and up, was patched, and every file inside the main StarDat.mpq, with the main game data, and everything is called "unknown_some_file_extensions_here_0000x" those some file extenstions here are i assume the main game, but were renamed by the patches so no one edits the MPQ files of the MAIN GAME. the broodwar.mpq is 100% normal, this is where i was able to change the splash screen. i extracted it, and placed it back into the original broowar.mpq.

once we find a way to know what each unknown file is, we will be able to easily import ships in 2d sprites. engine glows are the issue but i think we can swing it.

we might be able to add the Terran, Vasudan, and Shivan aspects as 4th, 5th and 6th species rather then remove the first 3 original which means 6 species (2 although are human lol), and allows for some interesting crossovers :):)

now we have an even bigger fish to fry, such as, how will the GTA/GVA Command Centers or in the case of vasudans: Pyramid Command like center; look like, as well as the Shivan Hives persay?

if anyone has an idea im open for suggestions. or... if the V god himself has an idea (daveb: :thepimp: ) he created FS no? since some of the sketches that were done of Vasudan buildings were seen before, think it possible to get the creator fo freespace to put his two sense in? maybe i should PM him...

PM him if you wish, but DaveB wasn't the creator of Freespace's universe - he was the lead programmer of FS2 (and possibly FS1 I'm not certain). Adam Pletcher created the Freespace universe.

What we want is the lead artist, the guy who did the concept art... *opens credits.tbl* Jasen Whiteside. Somebody email him, see if there's any leftover concept art.

then i suggest we get whoever we need to and make them buildings, it would be nice to see these guys invest in there game somemore as well....

it seems pretty easy to convert the models from Freespace --> Starcraft, so i can do a few if you give me their names.

i think:  
let's get ships done first, then we should concentrate on buildings.  then people like Knight Templar and deep_eyes who have big imaginations can think up campaigns :D :nod:

good idea, ima spend time today compiling a list of ships going to be reskined, then a seperate listing of ships/buildings/units going to make a full port over to starcraft. with some luck we should have fully original ships/buildings/units for SC soon.

also im compiling a list of ships soon that will make there way into freespace 2.

btw im a story writer and big idealist, i suck @ freding lol...

venom will begin the meshes soon for fs2, so if u can POF that will be great if not i can or someone else can if possible.

LASTLY, i need a full compiling of the "staff" who are participating in this mod, anyone who contributes to these 2 mods, are staff on the level that they assisted, anyone who is "staff" but is a "Regular" in the modding process is "main staff".

this is a project that any who helps, gets there name put in the credits for assisting!

Right now official main staff is:
Deep Eyes (both
Black Wolf (both)
Knight Templar (when the FS'ing begins)
Stealth (both)
Venom (fs wise - meshes mainly)

right now its me and black wolf doing the bulk of the work, but if anyone is interested in joining up, contributing, and or learning the SC modding process, ask below!!!

I take it ground units aren't modified... you could change the zerglings to shivans, atleast. Or maybee Ultralisks to shivans, might be a better scale.

Well the appollos and the girl look fine, but the renders look like swirled ****. :p

Did you soften the colors or somethin'?

actually lack of choice in terms of the coloring. Starcraft uses a specific Pallete of colors, if i dont use the same pallete the screen will be a big blank white spot.

the swirl happens to be a shivan.

might I suggest using the Ganymede to replace the protoss stargate (or something like that, can't remember the exact name at the moment), the Arcadia to replace the terran command center, and the jumpnode in place of the nydus canals?

Sathani could effectively serve as shivan command centers...

Deep eyes, I don't thinkwe need to use the default SC palette for the splash screen - try just reducing the colours to 256 and using it.

As for using installations for buildings it's possible, but we'd need to completely remove the ground based concepts of SC - not as difficult a prospect as it might seem actually... assuming we can find a way to edit engine glows.

I like it a lot.  color and everything is awesome, but if you could remove the boxes that are like a navy in the bottom left (there's two of them) and the woman in the bottom right, it would be awesome...

well its the only way i got it to work, unless theres a pallete for the interface in starcraft, if i used normal 256 colors, it came out WHITE.

im still making the list of ship names and buildings now i will have it ready shortly.

also i emailed daveb to contact anyone or assist in generating ideas on buidings

 Only just completed, the GTF Hercules Mark II.

This will probably be the last new sprite for awhile - I'm going to be concentrating more on fixing the problems I have with the currently existing sprites (All need wireframes except the Myrmidon, and also grouped wireframes, I need to balance their stats, add Freespace weapons and make a custom engine glow for the herc 2.

So stuff will be happening, you just wont see it (unless somebody else does something that is).

Hey this is excellent, I like FreeSpace 2 and am just getting into it but my comp is too slow to play it nicely (P2-450, 256mb ram, tnt2). SC, on the other hand, runs perfectly and is one of my faves.

dude welcome to HLP, i will let someone else let u know the 411 on the forum, also...

ur PC stats, are no better then mine lol, im on a celeron 400, 256 megs, tnt2, etc. lol. and fs2 runs smoothly for my pc on hi-res so... :p.... but besides that, i think its the way my mother board is, i mean, i do use a networking motherboard which supports AMD and Intel Chipsets up to 1.4 GHZ in each slot (2 slots, Socket A, and pin.):)

Anyway, hopefully you can explain some of the FreeSpace plot through this SC thing of yours. That would help.

I plan on bringing to FS2 what was missing, ground battles, for starters..

the website will be up in 2 weeks or less when i feel better, and BW has been working on some stuff for it, but RL is allowing us to rest. we need breaks so we delaying the site debute.
