Title: Hard Drive Psychology
Post by: Petrarch of the VBB on February 20, 2003, 02:03:55 pm
Anyone noticed that no matter what the capacity of your HD, you still get worried when that pie chart in Windows Explorer is more that 2/3 dark?
For instance I am currently worried that I only have 11.4gig left, on a 37 gig drive. 11.4 gig is ten time the capacity of my old machine!

That makes no sense. 600meg free and 40gig available, they're one and the same thing.

There's no reason you'd need all that space, anyway- hard drives are meant to be 1/3 empty.

Hell, I've got a 40 gig and my comp still gets crashy when my idiot family clogs it with mp3s over the 2/3 limit.

*pats HDD cooling fans*

Size is irrelevant, unless it has to do with cooling fans.

(yes, got some case mods  )

Size of your hard drive is irrelevant. It will be full sooner or later.

12.7 gigs free of 80.

Nuts to that, I'm getting one of these babies:

2 case fans as standard - a potential 5 in total, and that's without the modding I may do to it later.

I have six of them. :D My case doesn't look as flashy though; silver paint and a sliding cover, but that's about it.

Anyway, Petrarch, I know exactly where you are coming from; I have two 75GB drives which are both slightly over half full and whenever I see how much space I have used up, I immediately start thinking of what needs to be removed... :D

u know what makes u think ?
c drive 170mb left
d drive 2 mb left
of 80gb
e drive 670mb left
of 14.4

oh and heat is irelevant
if you have a server tower with 11 bays and rest full length pci slots and its open all the time
only 1 lil fan moving air arround for no particular reason

and no matter what they tell you
new ibm (well starting from 2-3 years ago) disks suck ass, as my 40 gb that broke because of quote ibm: "high usage and exessive heat"
then howcome the old old 14.4 ibm drive that has been running constantly even longer still works like it did when i bought it

uhm erm
never mind

Got one ... only without the window and the front isn't slanted out.

Got one of the HD bay tri-fans, and 4 3 inch fans 2 front 2 back of the case ;)

Mine is a generic beige box.  Nothing fancy at all, its 4 years old, though the system was totally refitted recently from a 400 to a 1.3GHz.
Currently there is (mods wise)...

Plans are for a window, i've got all the tools and materials, havent got round to it yet. Also want to do a respray, probably to a nice red.  Could get a friend of mine to do some art work on it too.

Dont worry, there will be photos ;)

the most important thing:

1)  Is it made out of aluminum? :D

aren't they all?

I have this one:

The only difference is that mine has fans all over it. Not too flashy, but it does the job well. :D

I have to say that case mods are one of the most pointless things I have ever encountered. If you want good cooling, just take the side panels off!

This is my case, and I am proud of it!

No, but with that many fans - do you really think it matters? :)
