I'm working on the Knossos add-on to the Arcadia. It'll have the usual circular spinny-thingy, but I want to know how everyone thinks would be best to orient it in relation to the Arcadia.
It will be connected to the Arcadia not via the hexagonal hole, but via the huge vertical slot/canyon/crevice in the side of the Arcadia opposite the landing platform.
Since it will be positioned on that end, I'm ruling out a positioning along the left-right axis. So the question is this: should the jumpgate be oriented so that ships travel through along a front-back axis, or a top-bottom axis?
I know that the standard tendency would be to orient it along the front-back, but I think the top-bottom deserves some consideration. So what do you think? Also, if you have a specific reasoning behind your preference, I would like to hear it. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

top-bottom
-
Front-back. Why? Because humans are naturally vertically oriented creatures, and having it up-down would be kind of silly.... your ship is aligned perpendicular to the station, but normally would align parallel.
-
front/back. I can understand the other one would be original, but there's a kind of galactic plan the GTVA seems to use, and that would be just weird. Plus I think it would not make mission editing easier (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
-
Front/back
Other way looks a bit odd to most.
-
Front/back - it's generally easier to use for mission makers and so on. And it looks more in keeping with standard Terran design.

Top-Bottom. I'm probably talking rubbish here because I can't remember the exact orientation or positioning of the docking points on the Arcadia; I presume they would be front-back, and ships approaching the station almost certainly will approach from front-back. Using top bottom for the gate should (hopefully) keep the flight path into the gate free from traffic that just wants to dock with the station, and vice versa.
Okay, it probably won't, but I say Top Bottom anyway, just to be different (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

I vote for top-bottom.
Why? Well in my campaign (16 years after FS2), beam cannons have been improved so that they can put them on the Arcadia. So I've upgraded the Arcadia, and I but a LRBGreen on the top and bottom "towers".
Having the portal so that ships pass through the top and bottom, if an unwanted ship comes through the portal, then the LRBGreens on the top and bottom towers would have a nice shot at it. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

? there's also detailled reasoning for front/back. Anyway, I should add that: it would be rdiculous: imagine a hecate jumping in from your vertical jumpgate. Now it needs to be involved in a fight. It has to do a u-turn, go down, and turn again to be horizontal. Then it has to turn again to face the wrong directoin, then it has to stop coz there's vomit everywhere on the bridge and the crew need to clean it. then commands shout at the officer coz the battle is lost, and eventually the hide coz they found out that pumping out of the jumpgate like a whale jumping out of water would look quite silly (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)

That's assuming the battle takes place parallel wih the gate... but in space, there is no up and down

there's still the galactic plan. even if you don't like the idea, you'll always arrive from to mars following an horizontal line paralel to the galactic plan, you'll never com from the top or the bottom. Plus it would just look dumb.

? just give the thing a round axis (cilynder) or any shpe that could work (can be completly different than a cylinder or even something round), and well, the user, once the gate is placed, can rotate the thing the way he wants (after all the addon is not actually docked with the arcadia so no worries). Then he can rotate it to 42.61° if he wants (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Could work well

That could work but for the fact that the thing is attached to the Arcadia by fitting into that slot the installation has, so to have something rotatable, it would need to be 2 different models. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)

Front/Back. If you have guns on the points on the station, like Joek said, it makes MORE sense to do front-back...think about it. If a ship comes out vertical, ONE of the beams could hit it effectively. If it went to the sides, BOTH would get a good shot. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
Besides, it fits more with Terran conventions. Why make it 3D and make the ships turn more to dock when you don't have to?
-
I'm having trouble visualizing either... but parallel with the pole thingies on the top and bottom would look better, since then you could add just a few tubes or something and make the poles have an actual use for once as supports. However, if you are considering something more or less just like the FS2 Knossos, then there's no really good way to do that.
If you have it be more of a tunnel-like thing, it would look very cool lined up with the Hole, but with a Knossos- like ring, you could add little toruses on the station poles and have the components move through the hoops, which would look very funny as well as having possible applications in the game. Still, the question is a bit too vague.

True. Having to choose between vertical and horizontal, that's soooo confusing (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)

Actually, I see how it could be one model, rotatable, and "attached" to the Arcadia.
You know in that canyon, at the end there are 6 of those docking point textures (like on the top of the Elysium transport). (I know, in the FS1 campaing I was trying to make I had four transports "docked" (just placed there really close so they looked docked) there in hiding waiting to flee.
Well, if the add-on had a long cylander who's end had four of those docking graphics, then it could be placed against four of the ones on the arcadia, and that way it could be turned either top-down or front-back.
At least this theory is just going on what I remember from the Arcadia. If it will really work is questionable with what the addon Sandwich has in mind.

How big is the portal section going to be (what's the largest ship that can fit through)? Cause I'm now thinking maybe front-back is best. I mean if the portal ring (or whatever it'll be) is nice and large, then front-back would give some balance to the Arcadia... since it's already got that big flat deck on the other side.

I have no set plans on how big to make it, but it will probably be a bit smaller than the Knossos... maybe.

I'm indifferent as to the positioning... (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
But here's a question - if we make the gate smaller, what's gonna happen if a ship which is too big for the gate comes rushing out of subspace?

I've been thinking about that one myself. The question actually needs to be narrowed down more, to "How will the game engine take it?"
I think that the engine would not have any problems with a Sathanas coming out of an Argo-sized Knossos, since it wouldn't need to actually fit through the Knossos - just appear there.
Of course, it would look quite dumb in a mission, but that's besides the point.

I don't know if any one else said this but I though when you say front/back you mean along side the station (next to it) so ships would go through facing the big hole (round).
What about the portal facing the arcadia? so the ships warp in and out asif there going to crash into it or are coming from it?

That would be one of the shortest jumps in subspace history.
It'd be a heck of a time to hear 'DIVE DIVE!

Dragons would be the only things that could make it. Maybe the myrm or uly.
And speaking of arcadia's, why is it that the 'hole' area is stronger than the rest of the ship?

Top-bottom, just because it would look cool..
Think about it, something like a Fenris just shoots straight up out of the thing then levels off.....
How would that not look cool?

If you want straight up entrance, then you want the portal to rotate parallel to the panel on the arcadia, no?
That's front-back

CLARIFICATION: Top-bottom refers to the entry-exit path of ships traversing the portal. Likewise, with front-back. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
Top-bottom would spit out a ship "vertically".

ok, it's quite simple: make two different models. I don't think I'd use the top/bottom one, just sound to srtupid to me, so everybody would be happy with the 2 versions (more people want the front back one, and the others will be happy with their ships jumping to hell)
