STUPID, STUPID, STUPID!!!!
I autosaved at an unfortunate point in the body of the Many, that caused me to die a fraction of a second later. My last permanent save is from the Command Deck of the Von Braun.
So, quite obviously I need a save from somewhere near the big tooth-thingys in the body of the Many.
-
I really hate it when that happens; although it has not yet been a problem in this particular game, I have experienced it numerous times elsewhere. I usually create two seperate savegame slots and overwrite them alternatively when saving so that I always have the last game if I mess up. Anyone remember that autosave-backup feature in Descent 2? That was a real lifesaver at times.
One thing I have noticed about SS2 itself though is that the "limited" quantities of ammo that all the reviews were complaining about are barely noticeable even on the hard difficulty; the rate at which I am collecting ammo far exceeds that at which I am expending it, since I use the lasier rapier on absolutely everything except protocol droids, turrets and the gas eggs. Although there are a lot of enemies, they aren't too bright so you almost always can lure them into a corner and pick them off without taking any damage in return. And unlike most games, there does not seem to be any limit on how much ammo of one type you can carry (or I have not reached it yet), so I don't have to worry about using up ammo when I find some that I cannot carry any more of, which is what happens to me in almost every other FPS game.
Also, one tactic I have found very useful is to create an inventory stockpile near the main elevator somewhere, which works well if you cannot carry some things but want to keep them in case you need them later. My position is right outside the engineering elevator, since there no guys respawning around there.
Lastly, there are some hybrids that throw frag grenades at you without using a launcher. Can you do the same thing?
-
as a response to your question: No.
as far as your elevator tactic goes, what do you do when you leave the Von Braun?
btw, I found a godmode cheat and managed to survive whatever killed me.
Finished the game 5 minutes ago. I loved the virtual Citadel Station.
-
Now it's time to go for the real one, then.
-
That god mode cheat, while useful, removes a lot of the atmosphere from the game, as you cannot be killed, you have no reason to fear. there is also a cheat that stops enemies respawning, but it doesn't work.
The summon_obj cheat is very good though. try summon_obj rumbler.
-
removed the godmode as soon as I could resave.
-

oh, I have not played that far yet. Can you return to the von Braun at all after that point?
-
Yes. Up until the.... but I won't spoil that for you. Yes you can, but after you leave the Von Braun, it's pretty much straightforward to the end from there.
-
ah okay, that's nice. I am currently finished with the objectives on the ops deck and am heading to the recreational deck (and trying to decide how to use the accumulated skill points :D), so I guess it would come sometime after that deck is complete.
By the way, which is generally better, the laser rapier or the crystal piece? (just finished researching the crystal but I cannot tell if it is any better than the rapier)

Are you talking about the "ubermensch" cheat? My understanding was that it was permanent once applied.
BTW, the Crystal Shard kicks ass. Much better than the Laser Rapier. Combined with the hand-to-hand O.S. upgrades and the various strength-enhancers, you can kill anything in two or three swipes.

no, I used the command line option.
Anywaym Crystal Shard rawks. But the Laser Rapier is good at taking out cyborg mercenaries. But, don't worry CP, you´ll be on the Von Braun for a long time, you haven't even gotten to the Command Deck.
-
Is there a sixth deck? (the elevator only shows five)
I tried using the rapier and the shard against some hybrids as a test but they seemed to do about equal damage. Then again, the wrench also did the same damage on the hybrids, but was much less effective at armored targets.
-
There is the main shaft on the recreational deck. You'll get access to it, with a little bit of help from the AI we all love to hate.

Yes it does. It doesn't STOP all spawning, just reduces it alot. For example, with out it on the medical deck there will be new guys that pop up from time to time in areas you cleared out no matter where you are.
However, with the cheat, only certain areas spawn new guys and only rarely. Examples would be the Engineering deck near the cargo bays, most of the Hydroponics deck, and the living areas of the Recreation deck. Without it, enemies will respawn anywhere and alot more often I found.
-
There's a config file you can edit to remove all respawning.
-
That's the one I meant, it won't work for me.
-
Good for you, you'd have ruined the whole point of the game if it had worked.
-
Actually, the respawning is kind of a good thing at times, because you can frequently get a lot of extra items from the dead guys. At the moment I have some 45 med hypos and 220 shotgun slugs, probably at least half of which are from dead hybrids. :D
-
Hmm, you can also build up quite a supply of coke cans.

Yeah I did that. That's what I was talking about. However, enemies still seem to pop up just not as much. Is there a way to totally stop it?
-
SATAN'S TAKEN OVER MY LEFT NOSTRIL! I CAN'T CONTROL IT!!! AAAGH!
Though honestly, I can't really tell the difference. Maybe next time he should possess a more useful body part...

You've already lowered the respawn rate and still can't handle the monsters?

and what purpose did that post serve, s'il vous plait?

he mistook the subject of the thread and decided to spam it.

icespeed posted...
I shouldn't be surprised anymore.

Yes.
Stop playing.
-
That always works... :D

nah. they just keep respawning on some other guys computer.

This I cannot resist. There is a patch for SS2 to remove the spiders! OK, so people might have a fear of spiders, but there are things much more frightening. Like .this sound (http://www.xmission.com/~m2hills/notyourmother/sounds/spine.WAV)
I am playing at the moment, and have just got onto the recreation deck
Ooh, Ooh! Online repository of SS2 music! here (http://www.ttlg.com/other/jukebox/ss2_2.htm)
-
The spiders are pretty stupid; if you circle-strafe around them and keep hitting them with something, they seem to get completely dumbfounded and either just sit there or jump around randomly. :D The larger type are exceptionally strong, though.
-
I got rid of them just cause I hated wasting the effort on them.

WTF? I beat the game on every difficulty mode without cheating or turning off spawning. Spiders are easy. I just got bored with them as they are small, annoying and everywhere in the last levels. Only turned them off now cause I'm mapping out the Van Braun for a story work.
-
On a side note. Does anyone have any pics of Citadel station? It would make a good FS mod.
-
um... the SS1 Intro. I'd post 'em but I can't bother to reboot in W98
-
What's your OS currently, then?
-
I think he's running XP and 98. It has somethin' to do with System Shock...
-
I'm dual-booting XP and 98. XP to do stuff, and 98 to be able to play DOS games.
-
A wise choice, sir.
-
I just did that with Deus Ex....
Stupid military bot snuck up on me....
Yes a military bot...
I'm deaf and didnt notice the ground shaking.. ok?
-
Ooh! Another great game. Bought it a week ago. Very good game. Though I'm still in New York, so I guess it'll be a long time before I finish it.
-
Watch out for the military bots.. theyre sneaky bastards.
-
They shall be no match for my GEP gun and l33t master heavy weapons sk11lz
-
Oh yes they will...
*shoots bot in the back with GEP gun*
*bot turns around*
*reloads GEP gun*
"Target Acquired"
*still reloading*
*BLAMBLAMBLAM*
*fires GEP gun again*
*BLAMBLAM*
*dies*
*bot turns around and walks away, sparking slightly*
-
The small security bots at LaGuardia are hard enough!
Damn my inability to sneak around, it's all running and shooting!
And what's more, I keep getting the blue screen of death when I play SS2. SHODAN at work, perhaps?
-
Yeah, LaGuardia is full of those little buggers, and they can sometimes kill you with just one shot so you have to blow them up before they fire. There is actually a GEP gun in one of the security towars though, so if you did not choose it at the beginning you can get one there.
Also, the Paul Denton/UNATCO fight is simply the best scene in the game for playing around, even better than the MJ12 Pacific Rim lab area. I am still discovering new, absolutely hilarious things that can be done there. Just a few days ago I finally was able to get a savegame where I got Paul to slide around in the area reliably (that's right; slide, without moving his legs and frozen in position); I had done this before a couple of times but previously could only very rarely get it to work. The door leading to the bathroom is what causes all this; this is one of the few doors in the game that has some very strange properties and makes the AI do crazy things when using it. :D
-
I once managed to get the entire UNATCO staff fighting each other, by spawning a load of cats and dogs. the dogs attacked the cats. Then a trooper attacked a dog, and hit another trooper, who then fired back, and so on. Soon the whole building was fighting, even Walton Simons. Even Sam Carter! How he got out of the armoury I'll never know.
-
Yep, I have done that as well; very funny to watch. :D The AI guys are actually capable of opening any door they want, locked or not, so you can sometimes actually get to areas that you are not supposed to be able to at the time by hurting a guy and letting him run to the door. :D
As for spawning stuff, you have not seen anything yet; for example, in the Paul Denton area, try spreading either lab flasks, basketballs, or computer terminals (computerpersonals) all over the floor, call the MIBs in and then watch the fun. ;7
Or, if you want to play around with that bathroom door I mentioned earlier, stand in front of him and throw a scramble grenade (nanovirusgrenade) at the opposite wall, and he will run into the bathroom and then start walking back to his seat. (at which point you can obstruct his path with the door and watch the fun)
-
You think the little buggers are bad?
The Military Bots resemble the Champion from Mechwarrior 3, and are probably about half as big (which is still huge).....

That's it? Pretty generic station, that.

Try this--
Open up (or create) "user.cfg" in the root of your SS2 install directory, and add the line "safe_texture_manager".

Yah but the mining laser that can devastate Earth all the way from Saturn makes up for it.
-
That come optional or standard?
-
It's part of the "Rampant Megalomaniacal A.I." upgrade package.
-
Aww... probably costs some insane amount of money. I guess I'll have to settle for the moon base with the giant plasma cannon, then. Stupid moon bases...
-
Hmm, when I get 3DS Max, in few days, I might try to make citadel.
-
What we really need is someone to make high-poly models of the creatures in SS2. They really lowballed their polygon budget on that one.
-
Ss2 uses a modified Thief engine i think..
-
Yep

Quite true, the runblers just look $#!^, really. And the hyrbrids are little better.
Also, when you take the shotgun from a hybrid, it remains in his hand, you'd think they'd have used separate monster and weapon models, but no.
-

SS2's engine is basically what became the Thief 2 engine (all incarnations of the Dark engine, naturally).
-
Speaking of which, what's the release date on Thief 3? Or Deus Ex 2 for that matter.
-
DX2 is due to arrive in Q2 2003, afaik.
-
Excellent.
but the question is, who will be able to run it?
-

-
That is the one game I have really, really been looking forward to for the last year, more than any other game out there. Second quarter, you say?
-
EBGames has a pre-order ship date of June 11.
-
well, unreal 2 run pretty good on mine so i should be able to run dx2
-
Turnsky, what did you think of Unreal 2? I thought it was kind of ordinary, to be honest. Yeah, it's stupidly pretty, but the actual game was rather plain, I thought.:sigh:
Not enough puzzles, and far too linear - you couldn't even go down the wrong corridor in any of the bases, because there weren't any wrong ways to go! Puzzles would have helped to break up the constant run-forwards-gawp-at-enemies-then shoot-them flow of the game. Nothing too SS2-esque (imagine trying to get through swarms of Drakk and Skaarj on the Rickenbacker:nervous: ), but some simple Half-Life style stuff would help.
I'm waiting for Doom 3 now - hopefully a lot harder and scarier!
System Shock kicks ass, though - it was the first PC game I ever got, and it's still one of the best!
-
..and short, don't forget that, it ended rather abruptly for me though some of the weapons were cool *relishes the idea of shooting spiders at people*
-
I have been playing U2 this morning, it is A bit bland, but the graphics just rule.
Keep running out of napalm, though.
-
How long is the game? (i.e. how much time does it take to complete?)
Keep running out of napalm, though.
:wtf: you actually run out ammo? I conserve my ammo so heavily in FPS games that I always end up finishing the games fully loaded... :p :D
-
Yes, I am forever running out of ammo. As I just blast away randomly, without a care for who I hit.
-
Still alive, eh? They will kill you, of course.
They always do.
-
Damn you, Xavier! Klamp G rule!
