Where can I find a good engine glow tutorial for max? (that allows you to still see part of it even when the light is covered by something)
-
Don't know about tutorials but try using omni lights with lens flares. Turn on the glow effect and if you want, streak too. Mess with the parameters a little (to make it look real) and turn on glow behind. Done.

The other good way would be using volume lights, sometimes even better if you're working with animations. use 2-3 lights to get the colours right.

Ooooh, you mean completely covered...just make it big enough.

The light or the lensflare?
-
Lens flare

it's normal that lense flares disappear when light is covered you know. but if you really don't like that, there's just a box to check somewhere in the tab that will render the lense flare even if the light is hidden by some object. there's not that many boxes to check, so you should have find out by yourself, really...

You mean Glow Behind? No that doesnt work either. :(
