Title: New Cruiser/Corvette *UPDATE*
Post by: Katalyan on February 26, 2003, 08:05:40 am
I recently finished a couple of long-winded models in Truespace.  The next few posts are all ships i made.  this one here is a
proposed cruiser/corvette. three photos below are of the ship itself.    Like always, i have no name for it.  angelfire refuses to let me let people dl things off of it, so if anyone could recommend a good FTP for files, it would be greatly appreciated, kudos to Village Photos for their high-quality service

I like it but it's a little flat edged. How many polys is it? Can you spare some to round the beak and engines out a little?

Make the circles rotate and call it a vasudan exploration vessel - the rings could be like micro knossoses, allowing it to traverse unstable node.

First thoughts: you've gotten a little too close to the sweep button.  Also, turn off quadrangle subdivision if you have it on, thouse are fine for renders but terrible for FS models.  I wouldn't mention it but it looks like (particularly on this design) that there are a couple of areas comsuming the vast majority of your polygon count, i.e. the leading edge of the forward "wings," and they have a bit of that repetition indicative of the quad division feature.

The design is good, much better than my early designs.  Just try some things besides sweeping, or sweeping different parts in sequence, rather than relying on one long sweep to get you where you want to go with extrusions.  Not to discourage you from using the feature (I still use it predominantly in the construction of new ship designs), but try to make use of the bevel, tip, vertex weld, and add/remove faces tools while you are adding features.  One last tip, in case you haven't been warned already, AVOID THE BOOLEANS!!!  At least unless you know how to fix the stuff that they screw up...

Stratt-you may not know, but this isn't one of his first designs :D

*hunts up other pics to use as blackmail :drevil:*

Anyways, I think this one would make a better science ship than a cruiser, and you have a lot of wasted polys on that second collection of faces from the front.

Yeah, there was that other fighter mod he did a while back, but I got the same feeling from it, just not as pronounced as these.  The fighters are good looking, but I think this ship is a bit on the blocky side and has some obvious polygon wastage.  Unless it's just a trick of the shading, of course...

EDIT: speaking of which, a basic wireframe would help us see the shape better in that untextured state.

And last I checked, you could still host up to 15mb on Geocities.

would definatly make a good future vasudan style ship, similar theme to a sobek. Though as people have said - poly count. :doubt:

Try editing the post so that the picture is a hyperlink. That way people like me who have seen it don`t waste your bandwidth.

EDIT : Yay! I`ve got my avatar back :) Thanks to the admin who did it :)

I WANT THAT SHIP!!!!

But again, it'll be a civilian ship - probably a freighter....

I likes it

Definitely Vasudan - maybe a new cruiser, like a mini Sobek?

Like it a lot, but I think it looks a little flimsy.  Make it a bit bigger in the middle, and it'll look a lot harder!:)
The poly count looks huge,  especially on the front - could cause problems.
I like Black Wolf's mini-knossos explorer ship idea - would be cool!
Very good, though - when's it gonna get textured?

Vasudan Science deffinitly. Maybe lab experiments with Zero-G or something in the rings.

It is a high poly count, mostly the rings in the middle though,  I will be removing a lot of polys from the nose but the back was relatively low.  Expect an up date soon.  To killfrenzy:  what would you like this ship for and as what.  I've heard science vessel but i was hoping to stick some beam turrets on the forward protrusion, but my turreting/texturing skills are zilch.  if anyone could direct my way towards a good texturing or turreting tutorial it would be greatly appreciated.  also, having been recently relocated to my laptop, can someone redirect me towards the PCS and VpView and DescentView web pages?  eiter that or i'll get my good buddy Analazon to email 'em. :p

Links to all the programs are in my FAQ. There are quite a few good modding tutorials linked to in there too.

Kat: She'd be a civilian ship, either a light freighter or pleasure craft. Probably the latter. It's for a total conversion I'm doing.

Right, it looks a bit like the ACv Malia.

I like it, they're very smooth ships.

Btw, hasn't the polygon limit been upped yet in the SC?

I updated the ship.  KF, it could be civilian but i like the idea of it as a post - great war pre-sobek light cruiser.  The nose is a bit blocky (ie. a preview of the to come rounded sobek nose.) Total poly count is 522.  Any texturers or project leads want it?  Drop m a PM  (http://image1ex.villagephotos.com/1731200.jpg) (http://image1ex.villagephotos.com/1731201.jpg) (http://image1ex.villagephotos.com/1731207.jpg)

Well, when I want new ships I'm not thinking of them as Terran, Vasudan or Shivan. It's going into a seperate franchise entirely so the pre-sobek idea doesn't apply. She just screams 'civilian' at me.

Anyone who's seen the Cruise Liner model in XWA will understand!

We still need an explanation as to why those torii are there.

Flip the normals, give it a water texture, and say it's a live Vasudan food tanker. :D

Post by: Katalyan on March 04, 2003, 07:23:58 pm
the torii (rings for dumb people) are as someone said "mini-knossoes"  allowing stable subspace travel anywhere.  They are used for fast civilian escapes, being a science vessel that goes anywhere and researches anything. (or something like that...)
Title: Sweet...
Post by: Star Dragon on March 09, 2003, 08:48:12 pm
It looks like it should be fast. I like the rings!!! great idea about the mini-knossos... Could you do a sotryline about increasing the range since there are 3 rings. maening how awacs increases the sensor capabilities for the fleet,  the Cruiser can make a stable jump point not only for itself but a limited number of ships/fighters. These cruisers could be awesome for hit and run tactics using limited forces against stationary/disabled targets or very slow moving ones (non-jump capable)...?

I like it.  Just needs textures.
