i've got some ood news and some bad news people:
the good news, the minimod DBASE is done!

please note that it's made by Analazon, and not by me, he deserves all the credit, i'm just hosting it.
the bad news:
my host is a slow one, a really slow one, and not the most reliable of all either, but it works, if anyone has a better sulotion, let me or Analazon know, and we'll sort it from there

Come on people!! ADD STUFF!! Whomever is hosting the Raynor should add it to ships, and that interface thing that was done a while ago (the flash desktop background) would also go well in there. Also Goob's Deus Ex Machina would go well too...

Add a "Campaign" and/or "Minicampaign" category, to go with "Mission". Also make a link from the view page to the add mod page.
DEM would go into the "Minicampaign" category, I would think.

Well, I posted up my ships, but I made a couple of errors and so there are some broken links and a dummy entry. I hate to do it, but I have to ask kasperl or whoever is maintaining the site to change the image links on the archangel from .jpg to .txt extensions and to delete the redundant and empty carrier post.

hmmm...I need to talk to kasperl about letting me maintain it, as I see the broken dummy entry...
mebby if I host the minimods.txt on a server that I have access to, then it would work better...

yeah that dummy entry was all to easy to do. I realized it the second I hit the button, but if I can do it then anyone can (and will). Perhaps a check to see if that field is occupied would be helpful, as there isn't much point to having a minimod in the database if it doesn't contain a file.
EDIT: and maybe an edit submission button, though that would open a new can of worms.

Descriptions get cut off after a certain length. It would be nice if you let us know what the maximum was on the form so we don't end up with our tech entry cut off.

they cut off at the edges of the text box...but yeah...it should say something about that...

the host is indeed slow, and there's nothing i can do about it.
anyway, Analazon, is it possible to make a system where registered users can edit their entry's? this way we would need a user database, but it will be easier to maintain.
i also wouldn't mind if some of the actual mods will be hosted on my page, i've got 30mb of webspace, and i'm offering 15 for this stuff.
basicly, it comes down to this, i'll edit entry's for now, that means this week only, after that i've got school again. and afyer this week some other system has to tought up.

Ok, something went wrong. My wallpaper shifted from desktop mods to ships. And I KNOW it wasn't like that before. :rolleyes:
EDIT: Also GalacticEmperor 's r LN-2 Frostbite Cannon shifted to the "ships" catagory.

ok, we've got a problem here. i don't know a thing about the dbase, i just edited out a wrong entry, and edited the link for some pictures. i'll have to talk to Analazon about this.

looks like what happened is somewhere you shifted the dbase by one or two charachters. The dbase is veeeerrry picky when it comes to that stuff, and I screwed it up multiple times myself...

pffft...I found what the problem was...I wasn't reading far enough on the entry's description, so the first few charachters were copied over into the start of the next entry, i.e. it says "StratComm 's eplo GTCa Phoenix " the "eplo" was left over from the previous entry. My fault in the writing of the code...

Nice...
Here's my advice:
1. Put ships on one page, weapons on another, missions on another... etc. This way even people with slower connections will be able to open pages fast (and it will look more organized).
2. Split the ships into classes - one page for capital ship, one for fighters, or go even further (cruisers/ destroyers/ carriers/....)
In time this database will get very big, so it's best to think on ahead.
3. You could allso put a special section for Truespace .cob or .scn files. That way people who started doing some ships (and stoped for various reasons) will be able to put them for download for someone else to finish.

High quality job. Site is a bit slow, well actually i suppose it's only the images hosted at independent servers. What someone should do is get server and host this ****er on it. I;m sure someone has a bit of cash somewhere, you'd be doing a service to us all (don't look at me or analazon, we're poor). But yeah, to analazon, great job i'm sure this will be very helpful for anyone either wanting to check out competition (well i suppose just other's works) and get ideas.

i know this host is really slow, but it works, and it's the only one i have. if anyone has something better, however, i doubt that it would be much trouble to set this up on another server without losing the Dbase.

w00t! User regestration is done...just need to tweak with some stuff until I can get username added to the minimods file.
Note: I am increasing the field sizes by A LOT, so everything is going to need to be put back up under specific usernames.

This is impressive from terms of its implications. I've already discovered a ship I'd never seen before, the Raynor, and its having a great influence on my thinking for Maelstrom. This may actually lead to a few campaigns being released sometime soon ;) *whoops and yays*

Added things:
-Split catagories up so each has their own page
-Added users
-Only registered users can post new submissions
-Re-did lots of file stuff so that it works a whole lot better now
-Upped the limit on the sizes a whole lot
As a result of the upped sizes, all of the mods will need to be re-submitted. Sorry.
And editing is coming...so sit tight.

to all people involved in the creation of this project, once again we salute you. To all people that are posting idewas, we salute you as well (maybe a slightly smaller salute :ha: ) seeing other people's works is a good way to see what works, and what doesn't, hee hee. But yeah, great job to you all.

Someone in the impulse studios topic had an idea of linking the minimod database and the studios themselves, in fact it will give all the spontaneous models created by this a home, so that they can be seen, and used. Analazon, if you read this, set up a section on the minimod just for the Impulse Studios thing. I can upgrade my village photos account a bit more and we can use it for impulse studios picture hosting. Just a thought.

you can't do anything with the DB right now, so you can't goof it up in any way.

it might not be your net connection, but also my host, as i said before, it's a *****. but it gives me 30mb of ree webspace, so i'm not complaining.
anyway, Katalyan, if you need hosting for images and mods, i might be able to help. i'm willing to givve 15mb of webspace up for the database, so i think we'd might be able to work something out.

You should probably put a password under the submit form, so that the person who put it one (if it's a campaign) can take it off if it get's stalled or cancelled.

kasperl, i don't need image hosting space... i'm willing to provide it so that we can have a slightly steadier picture load thing. I have 150 MB bandwidth but i can upgrade. It's village photos so it's pretty steady, i only need the bandwidth when i upload a new model. If anyone wants their pics hosted by me lemme know and i'll PM you with an email that you can send them to. Btw, Analazon is on the only wireless broadband (or broadband of any type) in our old city and when it gets cold and snowy things get reeeaaallly ugly. It's slow trying to talk with him on MSN. Sigh. Anyways just a thought.

I may be missing something, but how do I add? It keeps stalling at a "processing" page; is that supposed to go somewhere?

1) did you register?
2) it goes to the processing page, if the mod is successfully added, then it will give you a link to go back to the main page. If it didn't, then I don't know what is wrong, because it worked for me...
(and make sure that you set the mod type to something other than none!)

Analazon, you may want to look at the main page. It looks like you deleted something important along with that 97 meg text file.
And it still won't take my submissions.

GIMME BACK THE OLD DATABASE!
This one doesn't even allow me to add stuff. The links work 50% of the time, takes LONGER to load for me (Don't ask why).
The old one was far better. Easier layout. Easy access to all files. Etc...

on the topic of loading times, it's probably my host, it's a really,. really slow thing. mind you, when i whas on 56kb, things loaded faster then this, en i'm on cable now!

Well, I have double T3 and it loads in about 10-15 secs. So I have no real complaints there. Just that it used to be 5 secs :rolleyes:
Still I don't like this one as much as the first.

it flips out if the file is empty
and tiara...the file is actually a helluva lot smaller than it was last time, so it should take less time to load then before.
and the registration thing not working is really weird :doubt:

found one thing out...why it doesn't give an error if you try to reg the same username multiple times...I might have made the same error in other files...
EDIT: d'oh...that is it...
I'll try to upload the new files...it should work after that...I don't think I'm going to be able to remove the multiple instances of StratComm...but that shouldn't cause any trouble.
EDIT 2: All uploaded! Should work now! (I'm going to test it...)

Hey analazon, your PM box is full. Anyway, thanks for the heads up on the reopening of the DB and I traced down another bug for your work pile:
I've uncovered the main problem with multiple usernames. It seems that there is no check for duplicate entries, and as my name is in the system three times I get three posts for every update. I can get rid of them, but it's cumbersome.
EDIT: Looks like cumbersome may be the way to go, if no one else can get the same bug.

ok, this *should* work. It should break out of the loop before it encounters any other of the usernames. Try it out now StratComm...

oh-and to delete stuff, just go in to "edit", and select "none" as the type of mod. It won't write it to the file then

I'm still getting three confirmation messages, though I haven't actually added anything since reporting the bug. However, by editing and setting the mod class to none, I can effectively remove the extra entries even if it doesn't keep me from posting multiple times.
But it looks like you've already said that :nod:

I am no longer putting anything in this thing untill its 100% done. Getting a bit tired of this.

Did you remember to re-enter the mod type? It defaults to none, meaning deletion of the current entry. Although slow (and my triple post think) I think most of the bugs have been worked out at this point.

little suggestion: add a little more/better screenshots for the ships, both renders/screenshots..some of them are so dark you can't recognize anything 'cept thruster glows

Yes, this is what I did:
Put both in. Checked them in the actual database. Found a spelling mistake in description and edited the entry. Pressed the "edit" button. And POOF!, gone.

KARMA...if you click on the screenys, they get a lot bigger ;)
and Tiara...it doesn't sound like you re-did the mod type. It defaults to delete the item...looks like I need to do a bit more work here and there...

I used what I had as far as screenshots go, sorry that you find them difficult to make out. They should clarify when they are bigger, but as for showing thruster glows that is sometimes one of the more unique traits of my ship designs, so I though 'd put them in. I was tempted to link to the download page instead of the actual file, but I decided against it since anyone clicking there would be wanting the file anyway.

UPDATE:
The database isn't permanently screwed, it is just that kasperl's host is switching from unix to linux, so they disabled it "temporarily"
Unfortunately, "temporarily" could mean anywhere from one week to 3 months.

well, fusionhosting was attacked by hackers, so my acct got deleted, and with it the minimods.txt that had all the data in it. Also, I accidentally deleted the entire dbase that I have cashed locally, so unless kasperl still has the stuff, the entire dbase's contents are lost. Also, the old dbase was somehow corrupt, and was doing funny things. I'm still not completely sure why it did that, but I'm trying to make it so that it doesn't happen again. The error that occured is un-reproducable on my machine, but the error _did_ occur on the copy that I (used to) have cashed locally.
Arrgh...this thing is a real pain-in-the-ass...

alright, I uploaded the newest incarnation to the website, link is in teh siggy™.
What I want right now is for people to spam it. Add as many entries as possible. Consider it a "stress test". Please don't do things like HTML, etc... I know it works, but several /tables will make life not-so-fun. These don't have to be real mods, just do innane stuff to it...
If it passes that, then I can take a big stamp that says "WORKING" on it, and smack it on the DB, and I'll re-add all of the existing stuff because I'm the one that accidentally deleted it :nervous:

I *think* this will be the final move for the HLP minimod dbase. Sometime today, I'm going to try to restore the old entries.
And I do have administration stuff now, so I can edit/delete peoples entries! Yay!
The description size has been reduced, but that shouldn't be too much of a problem.
And Tiara-I think you can put stuff in now without it freaking out.

well, I could actually put it on the AotD page, but since HLP 2.0 is now out, you can submit stuff to it. Also, the DB is pretty empty since after everyone put their stuff in intially, then it broke, then I had to re-write how it used files, and everyone didn't want to put their stuff back into the db.

Luckily we ALMOST have enough money to pay for more so it should be eventually done.. and I'm SO tired of saying that..
As for HLP MINIMOD well the account was never used, so even if it was working there is nothing there. Oh, and don't copy F2S please :P

but yeah, HLP has one now, and since F2S is up(sorta :p), this one is kinda pointless.
