Title: POF Converter
Post by: TopAce on March 01, 2003, 05:38:23 pm
I have a problem that prevents me from experiencing the secrets of model creating: POF Converter performs illegal operation when I am trying to save my own POF file. I use TrueSpace 2, I texture my model, and after I want to save my COB as POF, and this problem runs.
Please help me!

Note : I texture my model with TS2's Paint->Texture map
The texture is a bmp file unextracted from the main vp. POF Converter can show these textures without problem.

I don't know much (read: hardly anything) about modelling stuff, but I'm sure that textures have to be in .pcx format. All the ones in the game .vp files are, and all the ones in mods I've d/led are as well, so that's probably the problem. Open the textures you've made with your picture program, and save them as .pcx files. They should work fine then.:)

As I said, I know precisely jack about this, so I may be barking up the wrong tree, but have a go. You never know - I might be right!!!;)

if you are using PCS, then the problem is that you have faces that are too close together/screwed up modeling as result of booleans.

Textures dont matter when converting cob->pof. It only changes the name of the tex to be a .pcx, it doesn't actually open the texture.

I could experience that texturing is the problem. As I told, I do this by TrueSpace(then 2, now 3.2). And without texturing a specific model, PCS works fine, and the conversion is done successfuly. Another thing my turrets don't work, but PCS automaticaly can detect them.

Not that is my problem. I use TS3.2, and don't want to make multi-part turrets yet(the thread you gave me the address is about it). Perhaps I don't glue the my turrets to the main group well. I am just now experiencing Trueview, and examine the Fenris' COB with Trueview. How do I glue the turrets and it what order? I glue the turret as child to the main group as post modding.doc says, but that makes another groups and causes problems(PCS performs illegal operation)
Do I have to make LODs, or it is optional? Every COB I opened use LODs and the turrets are members of the main LOD.
Another problem: PCS 1.2.4 renames my groups to stupid ASCII names and if I want to rename it, illegal operation is performed.

Since you`ve got trueview don`t bother with the glue at all. Simply pick up the group for the turret move it on top of the main LOD and release the mouse button. That will glue the turret as a child of the LOD (which is what you want). I always try to stick the turrets on in the order they are numbered but I don`t know if that is important. I just do it cause it makes things neater later :)

You don`t  need to do LOD's but if you don`t do them you cut down the number of ships you can use in a mission with your mod. This becomes especially important if you`re doing a fighter and may have 10 or 20 of them flying about all using the CPU sapping main LOD.

That one must be the problem: If I try to rename those ASCII, PCS performs illegal op. amd will shut down.

Opps! Another thing: I converted the POF of the Fenris to COB, then, without entering TS, I tried to POF it to fenris02.pof. Illegal operation.
So not my COB is the problemful. Any newer versions to PCS than 1.2.4 build 61?
