Because everyone complained it would be a bad idea, a stupid idea, an idiotic idea, and it wouldn't change anything but convince Interplay not to sell the FS rights to anyone else, or it would convince Interplay to make a FS3, but not with Volition so it would be crap, bla bla bla...

No complaining here, just a petition. I think that since the chances of FS3 being made by V is nonexistant, for that to happen the fans and public have to speak up. It's better than grumbling and doing nothing.

Starwing was talking about the reception the last petition got in the community.
You don't seem to realise that if Interplay sees that the Freespace licence still has a following (=potential $), they definately won't sell it outside their publishing.

Well, what's the alternative? No FS3. Even if they don't sell it, there still might be other ways.
If you don't want to support it, that's fine. I plan on going through till the end.

Which would you rather have? A FS3 that's not 100% to your "idea" of FS3,...or nothing at all?

A FS3 that turned out crap? Or none at all?
Hmm... good question. But not exactly a deserving end to a great series.

Volition did a great job on the Freespace series, and that is obvious. However, just because they did such a good job, doesn't mean that any other publisher would make a crap job of it.
Now, don't get me wrong, I'd really like to see FS3 made by Volition- hell, I'd just like to see it made... unless it's crap.
What I'm saying is that I don't mind if it's made by a different developer, just as long as it's good.

This is a little pointless, there already is a Freespace 3. It's whatever you decide to whip up in fred, if that's not good enough then I'm sorry to say that it's the best you can expect.
As far as Interplay selling the license goes, look at FS2 Gold edition. It's nothing more than the original game with bells and whistles, they could keep re-releasing it and adding a little more each time. Let's face it, it's obvious that as long as they can squeeze every last ounce of profit out of it they'll never sell the license.

Does anyone know of any freespace sites that have BB's. I've found a lot, I want to get the word out to as many people as possible.

Well being V's already commented before about asking Interplay if they get release the rest of the storyline I'm sure if Outrage or whoever makes a FS3 it will follow along with the story line.
Techinically V'd HAVE to give sotryline, any concept drawings etc etc being Interplay owns them.

No. Interplay owns the rights to the names. Not really anything else. You can't call another game Freespace or have Vasudans in it.
But Volition owns the rights to the code, the models and the story (IIRC).

This is something that always puzzled me. Mike Kulas said he had released the source, but then he had to go to Interplay for approval (which, AFAIK, is why we don't have it in our hands today). I wonder why.

Actually I think Interplay does own the rights to FS entirely.
Like Set said,..Mike's comments abut needing Interplays approval to release the source code kinna proves this. If V owned the rights to the code, politics be damned they wouldn't have to ask interplay squat (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

It's probably because the name and the guts are intertwined, and releasing one might require releasing the other.
